I am trying to darken my saltmarsh map, so that when I run the path for rares, its easier to just run the route once, and then I can follow the path, but the map is mostly open, even though I haven't picked up all the explorers.

Usually people inquire about how to prevent this behavior :)
My fuzzy knowledge of this tells me that wilderness maps reset after visiting X number of other wilderness maps. Perhaps try entering, say, 5 other wildernesses to see if that resets it?
Lightly supported by the quesiton in this 11 year old thread: https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/236091-Wilderness-Map-Reset

good question.
i forgot the datails, but iirc it has to do maybe with time, after some time they reset maybe, or you can just enter 3 or 4 or 5 random dungeons\ or wild, iirc it may have something to do also\instead with something like that it remembers only "the most recent maps visited". if you have all the explo in a wild, it will always be shown btw, no way to reset it in your current life.
sorry can't remeber it right, try this :)

If you're running rares, don't you mostly know the route by about the 5th time?

For me yep. dont need a dark map when i have the route and all the rares memorized.

Went to six different wild maps, and back to saltmarsh and map is still lit up. I checked the log and I still have explorers to find, so I guess Ill try in a week, and see if it resets. thanks for the suggestion.

If you found all the explorers the map will not darken again

Not sure if this still works, but at one point it only cached the last 3 Map instances if you had not completed the map (all explorers).
If this is still true then you may be able to do this by going into 3 different explorer areas/Quests (possibly run a few feet to draw a partial map)
Don't recommend using quests in Saltmarsh as they are in the explorer area and would stay being part of the last 3.

really? i was almost sure the game forgets the "old maps". i hope at least the waiting system works, not sure.

oh come on dudes, sure you are correct but chatting about obscure game mechanics is a lot more fun! :)
