View Full Version : Open Lock without Artificer or Rogue levels?

After all my years of playing DDO, I've always multiclassed into Rogue for the trapsmithing/UMD skills.
A thought occurred to me the other day about a pure Ranger that took Open Lock & UMD as off class skills.
I know I won't achieve max ranks without Arti/Rogue levels, but as a flavor build during racial reincarnations...

Would a pure DEX-based Ranger be able to use the Open Lock skill (with Thieve's Tools of course) without Arti/Rogue levels?

Nope, trapping skills are locked out if you aren't 1 level of a trapping class

Well, that's probably the reason I've always grabbed a Rogue level...

Half Orc race has Lock Bash that works pretty well in lower levels but doesn't match super well with Dex based Ranger character.
Or you could take Wiz/Sorc levels for Knock

Knock spell, Sorc or Wiz, Half Orc has an AP in their tree that allows you to bash open locks.

Frogo hireling from the saltmarsh ultimate fan bundle works for 30 and lower levels. He is able to get all the level 30+ traps and locks I've run into so far (about 40 quests since the update).

Traps, yes, but Open Locks don't require detection/disarm. I was under the impression Open Locks/Trap skills are entirely separate use cases and there for the OP's question would work just fine?

If I'm incorrect, happy to be updated, but making sure I ask as it strikes me that this first reply seems off target/missing the salient part of the question?

Open Lock is considered part of the "trapping skills" in DDO parlance, because it's tied to the trapper classes. It wont let you spend points on either OL or DD unless you have a level in Arti or Rogue. And you cant use the OL ability unless you have at least 1 point trained in OL. So a pure Ranger simply cant open locks.

That's good to to know... so far I've only run the Saltmarsh content with my Ranger/Rogue and haven't needed to use Frogo

a knock spell in some form should work.
ones close to your level are best.
