Have to say that this season of hardcore mode has been exceptionally frustrating. Ranging from the annoying lag and lack of complete in game support for issues which also exists in the regular servers has become quite absurd, especially as a paid VIP account. Some of the deaths I have experienced have really lead to some rage fulled moments that have now left me not playing anymore since the current season is close to wrapping up and I have no way of achieving the HC goals I want. So I will create another character to do weekly gold rolls and then use them to move collected items to my main server before deleting them and continue with my DDO break.

Some of the issues like lag are workable, but others not so much. Had a melee artificer get killed by trap soul spell. The earliest that spell can be gained is level 15 wizard. I was in a level 6 quest on normal and was doing it on elite and had a spell caster npc hit me with that for instant death. That upset me a fair bit. Then the latest on which made me stop playing the remainder of the season is the death by misadventure where my stat was reduced to 0 in 2 hits on elite. Necropolis quest Tomb of the Shadow Lord. Was hit by 2 shadows and had my STR reduced to 0 and died instantly. Yeah earlier in the game hit with ray of enfeeblement and did not die with a 0 STR. Makes no sense, if a stat is drained to 0 then shouldn't the effect be the same across the board? One is a spell and the other is a spell like ability, but are both still spells with the way spell like abilities are implemented in game. And I have been stat drained to 0 before in game on higher level quests and did not die immediately either. Was drain by other shadow creatures and wraiths, had DEX at 0, and WIS at 0 but did not die. So why does 0 STR from shadow touch attacks kill you immediately? No sense here.

Oh well, maybe something will get done to improve the game play with proper balancing overall, some quality of life improvements, and the fixing of long standing bugs. Not only that maybe something done to improve the servers so there is a major reduction in lag. Because I have to ask, just how stupid do the developers think we are. The game is 15 years old, and I am pretty sure in that time every player has updated their PC at least once, and their current machines are well above the suggested specification for running this game. I have a quad core CPU and 32GB of RAM and a 4 GB video card and I lag. Not to mention the quest completion lag. Where the entire party freezes for about 2-3 seconds because the quest finishes. I have seen players die from this because they freeze at the moment of disabling a trap then walk back and forth through it for massive damage. This game requires a lot of fixes to alleviate the issues it has as well as hardware updates, otherwise at some point the game is going to see a mass exodus of players and will be staring down the barrel of its eventual demise.

Doesn't help your frustration that much now, but:

https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/524170-Well-that-was-the-worst-death-I-have-ever-had-since-2006

Many of us have died to shadow touch in HC. Simply having less strength / tomes and items I think makes it show up more.

Insta-death needs to be covered at all times. And it needs to be a deathblock item. You can find them really early on, and later augment, and I wouldn't ever, ever not slot it.

Good luck next season!!

Shadows have a special debuff that kills you if they drain you to zero STR so instead of helpless, you just die (which is likely to keep along the lines of pen & paper where shadows kill via STR drains). https://ddowiki.com/page/Taint_of_Shadow

Lag wasn't even close to what it had been in HC3.

Swimming underwater when a lag spike hit was a death sentence last time.

I personally died far less in HC4 than HC3.

I think sometimes, like on loot rolls, or anything else in this game, you just get streaks of unlucky rolls, which are frustrating at any time, but especially so when it means losing a lot of work and time.
