Who’s afraid of a flame sphere? No one… until now

So there I was in Necro 1, just working my way through. Pretty routine run, rogue hire for traps, my bard blasting whole groups of mobs into vapor. No big deal. Once in a while a flame sphere gets cast as usual. I have a standing 15 fire resistance so these things mean nothing just like on the live server. They’re stupid and annoying but never a threat. Open a room, blast the room to bits, all mobs dead before I could even see what they were. One of them cast a flame sphere. Shrug. Flame sphere rolls towards my party. Shrug. Flame Sphere hits me. Small amounts of fire damage but also 20-40 points of extra damage, “be silent” effect, and the hits are coming fast. Did about 80 damage to me by the time I got away from it. It killed two of my three hires because hirelings love to attack them. It’s a spell so there was no crown over it but it was cast by a silent one so it was loaded with all the nasty Silent One effects and of course it lasts a while. Flame Sphere scary for the first time ever. Man I do love Hardcore

Thanks for the heads-up.

Seems kind of bogus since Flame Sphere doesn't scale for players either by level or spell power, so it shouldn't scale for champs.

On another note, there are a number of spells that take care of those. I think almost any aoe ice/snow spell like Ice Storm, Gust of Wind, and I recently found out that Lesser Globe of Invulnerability (Globe of Invulnerability probably works too) snuffs those out as long as the sphere pass through an edge of the globe. Of course, if you're silenced, then those options aren't available.

Just be happy it was a Silent One and not a V.Legs champ. You would have been dead. (Speaking from experience from someone who got the fear while being hit with a dancing ball spell from one of those champs.. nothing you can do when you are dancing except die)

I was a Tiefling so Valaara's Legs don't scare me. a symbiont would have been really bad though

I usually lure the necro spheres into the water. They go out in that after a while. Sounds perfectly logical. Just requires a bit of running around, through the water.

I have since been reminded that Flame Spheres are summoned monsters and not a spell effect. So the mob that cast it may not have been a champion. the sphere also had no crown or indication that it was a champion until it hit. Let that sink in. . . a normal non-champ casts a spell, it's an unlabeled champion Flaming Sphere. scariest flame sphere ever. this is why I love Hard Core.

If Flame Spheres are summoned monsters, does that mean they can draw the aggro of another Flame Sphere?
