Fortunately with the servers down there are other games that I like to play as well. Oldschool Runescape is one of those games. I think there’s a lot of similarities between DDO and OSRS. Both are long-running legacy games with regular updates. OSRS is based on a version of Runescape from 2007, with many content updates since the game’s release in 2013. The most notable thing about OSRS is the level of player engagement the OSRS team at Jagex maintains with their base. Many devs are active on Twitter, Reddit, Discord, and other social media to discuss new updates, meta changes, and even just joking around with the players. While the DDO team does use these forums, and Discord, and the Twitch streams, there have been many negative feelings about U49 ahead of the update, leading up to today, which could have been avoided if player feedback played a more active role in development.
Interestingly, OSRS has been aiming to make a “Ranged pass” of its own. The specific details aren’t too important, but the proposal was very unpopular for a variety of reasons, mostly because of nerfs, and justifications for the proposal shook the communities confidence in the devs. To many OSRS players they were left wondering if they even play the game! Revisions to the proposal were made, but they were overall very minor and did little to address the issues raised. Jagex defended their decisions, saying the changes were necessary for further updates in the future. It seemed like the proposal was going to go through in the coming weeks despite the backlash.
But then, it didn’t! They shelved the rebalancing and went back to the drawing board for a while. They continued to put out content while reworking the balance changes. Yesterday they made another news post about the rebalancing, directly addressing player concerns about the original proposal, with detailed charts showing the DPS of various weapons. They lay out their reasoning for needing change in certain aspects, and in addition to some tweaks to the more popular aspects of the rebalancing, they ask again for thoughts on how they might make changes.
You can read the post mentioned here (‘ https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/equipment-rebalance-ranged-meta?oldschool=1#_ga=2.111349964.979510720.1619046 712-899017497.1618779873’). The earlier posts in the series are also linked in that news post. It might be an interesting read.
A lot of great work went into actionable feedback during 3 Lammania “previews”. Today didn’t have to go like this.
