View Full Version : How is arty in epics?

I have been wanting to try out an artificer and actually bring it to epics for once, as I always tr at 20 while an artificer. Most of the artificers I have seen at 30 weren't great, and those that were good were using, of course, some form of rogue/fighter split. I just want to know if a pure artificer would be at all good at 30.

Artis are still strong, just not going to hit inquisitive levels. Most people only splash a few levels for runearm use nowadays, but a pure 30 arti is perfectly fine.
Are you looking to do mid-high reapers or something? Pretty much any class can figure something out for r1, and, assuming you're ranged, you'll have plenty of time to plink away at enemies so can be a little squishier than melees.

Any build split above 4 Artificer hasn't been relevant at end-game in years.

A bit late to this, but here is my experience of Arti in epics as of February 2021. They are okay, but not great. I am in the middle of doing my third artificer life. The first two were iconic deep gnomes 1 Wiz/19 Arti and 2 Wiz/18 Arti both run in Shiradi. Both of these were done with 41 points on the Inquisitive tree and around 31 or so on the Battle Engineer tree. I could easily solo most R1 content except for the Feywild and Sharn, where I struggled. The only reason I did iconic was because I really hate leveling from 1-12, it is just slow and not rewarding. Of those two, I would recommend to do 1 Wiz/19 Arti. It was stronger.
I am now trying iconic purple dragon knight 2 Fighter/18 Arti with 42 Arcanotech/36 Battle Engineer split run in Draconic. It is doable, but painful. I am only at 20 now, but unless something magical happens I expect to be unable to solo endgame content at R1 given the toon's current performance.
I hope that helps.

Artificer is not going to be a class that you want to stay at 30 with. It just doesn't have the full punch that other classes/multi-classes do.
However, it is one of my favorite classes for doing a racial life as an inquisitive, because it has so much utility. And with enough skill and past lives it can easily let you run R3-4 while you're TRing.
1. It can do traps, though it doesn't have Evasion. I get around this by splashing 2 Rogue or Monk. This allows me some forgiveness with trapping and also lets me swim Crucible
2. Fire turret is great for Shadow Crypt especially because I'm a shooter
3. Rune arm damage is a lot better if you can get used to hitting Alt a bunch
4. The dog has some utility for pulling levers which is helpful in The Pit and Death House
5. Battle-Engineer has some enhancements to boost No Holds Barred
6. If you don't mind resetting enhancements, you can get Endless Fussilade fairly early in a TR
7. You get some decent cure pots which can be metamagiced because you're not exactly saving spell points for something big.
8. If you have lots of gear with clickies you've been hording and scrolls, all of it gets better as you level.
All that being said: If you want an end game shooter, not going to be found in Artificer, unless your guild needs someone to pass out Deadly Weapons.

As a caster, the lower levels for arti the super quick ones. Once you get blast rod you just one shot everything in aoe. Better caster at the lower levels than a sorcerer. As you level higher is when things start to suck.
I'm gonna try and see how one goes as a caster in epics with the changes to some of the spells. It probably still sucks as pure caster. But at least, if it is unplayable, it should make a decent inquisitive, like a druid...
