View Full Version : DDO could use more spell variety in heroics.

After my last couple caster lives I've been thinking that the current spellbook is getting kinda old, while very recently we finally got a new illusion spell color spray, and a bit ago we got the new level 9 spells I feel like there are a lot of holes in the current arcane spellbook that could be filled. My suggestions will mostly be for the arcane spellbook, though there are some things that need to be cleaned up in the divine, druid, and bard spellbooks as well.

Here are some suggestions:

When leveling as a sorc it's often suggested to level fire/acid or fire/electric and only swap to your actual element later because fire has probably the strongest low level aoe due to scorch and fireball, in higher heroics things like otiluke's and chain lightning somewhat compete with DBF so the difference is less pronounced. A specific hole I noticed while trying to level as an Ice sorc is that there is a serious lack of instant, aoe, damage spells until the 5th level spell cone of cold that you get at level 10, your only real options are kiting things through ice storms and casting snowball swarms.

Ice Nova (and/or Shock Nova as well) as a level 3 spell would be a great addition to compete with fireball, a centered aoe around the caster (like warlock burst) doing similar damage to fireball, perhaps a slightly larger aoe to make up for being in the middle of a pack of mobs on a squishy sorc.

Force spells have the magic missile/chain missile/force missile spell list and that's pretty much it for arcanes unless you count meteor swarm, Force is a really underutilized element outside of archmage SLAs (but nobody uses that spec), and Feydark SLAs (better but no substitute for having actual spells). An additional high level force spell such as the Force explosion used by the bosses of Tavern Brawl and Slave lords pt2 would be a great addition as a 7th or 8th level spell.

Additional high level Illusion spells would be great, PK and color spray aren't enough to really make it a functioning spec even with feydark. So many illusion items in the game but only like 3 spells in the base arcane spellbook that even use DCs. Some good ideas for illusion spells would be Illusory Cage that traps a target in an imaginary cage, mindless targets like golems would be trapped for the full duration on a failed will save while intelligent targets would be able to make repeated saves to escape. Another could be Mirror Image as a defensivespell

Acid casters are in a pretty rough spot since most of their spells are DOT, boosting the damage of single target DOTs such as melfs and black dragon bolt (and non acid dots as well) would be great, also boosting up some of the acid spells in the druid spell list would be nice.

I don't play much Divines or Bards so I don't really know what new spells they'd like, but at the very least a pass on the damage of some of their abilities, Bard sonics spells like (greater) shout and Horn of Thunder could be doing a whole lot more, Divine damage spells are universally weak outside of a few exceptions like Sunbolt, boosting the damage of spells like sunburst and Firestorm/FlameStrike (seriously who uses the Divine fire spells?) would be a good start.

Artis are pretty good except they need a way to strip electric immunity in Archanotech, a T5 or capstone that lets you strip immunities with runearm charged shots would go a long way to fixing the class as a spellcaster.
