I don't know if flying carpets are going to be added into the game, but if they are, I sincerely hope I can float around while in a /sit position. That would be SO dang delightful.

That aside, thanks for the fun stream guys!

Just hope it's not snail speed flying like in reaver's reach.

I all ready have made a budget reservation for this.
If it's part of an expansion I'd buy that expansion just for that.
Even if the vertical movement is limited.

Now if I can do ranged combat (incl slinging spells) you'd struck gold.
Will have so much fun in explorer areas raining death from above.

Flying carpets.
The bigger question is Al-Qadim in DDO's Future...

or dark sun.. but personally ill take Al-Qadim over dark sun.

Or is it a classic pack like Master of the desert nomads.

My thinking is you don't just randomly introduce magic carpets.. there's an upcoming pack where it fits the lore. This was Sev dropping a hint without dropping a hint.. although it could just as well be him wanting to do one of those packs and there is no actual plans to.

First thing to do would be to change that raft of Casper in Just Business
I would suggest to change his appearance (clothes) to be thematically more fitting, but that is to much of a sensitive topic nowadays.

Would seriously add so much backstory to those characters as to why his daughter has fallen in the hands of a crook.

Maybe they're thinking of revisiting Anauroch.

It makes perfect sense that with all the lag we currently have that they'd plow blindly ahead on creating additional sources of it BEFORE actually addressing the current issues.

I didn't watch the stream, but from how it read (factoring other areas that was talked about) and what I know of the game, I thought it might have meant something like this:

https://i.imgur.com/juR42A9.png

Except, instead of the Bloodhound in its "flight" or "leap" animation, we get a carpet for fast movement. And either a kneel or sit animation to ride along with it.

Might just be me misreading it though. Will need to go listen to it proper at some point.

Dragon mount. Wizards need them.

I am kinda split on this subject.

Yea, non-horse mounts are cool.
however...

You ever play NWO at a major hub?
It looks like some sort of bizarre monster parade.

flying carpet in the right campaign ---SURE, make them very common, it fits.
In DDO's campaign they might exist, but they would be rare.
Regular carpets would be rare.
Steam punk flying contraptions make more sense really.

I have nothing really against flying carpets but do we really want Stormreach full of them?

What I am trying to suggest, I think they would make a great rare drop.
But a poor choice for a store item or common event award.

Keep them ...rare

Just my opinion.

LOL. This is so true. I'd prefer not seeing DDO turn into what Tera was like with mounts, despite Tera having by far the most cool dragon mounts you could imagine in a game. It's just not D&D.

Carpets has my vote. Dino? Ugh, no. Carpets are FAR more D&D and would absolutely give the game MORE of a D&D feel than it's current "Gunfight at the OK Coral" theme. Sadly, I don't think there's a way to do a skate style thing, even with a flying carpet base, and keep it D&D.

The most fun I had with a mount in any MMO was with Wildstar's Hoverboards. I think there wasn't a player in that game that did not make at least one skate-punk and one hamster-baller. Left the game due to bugs about a month after release and was going to play again when I found it was cancelled. So, gave DDO a try instead. Older game = all the bugs are fixed, right?

No unfortunately because that would be too much fun. As I understand it LotRO has/had a limited form of mounted combat that just isn't/wasn't up to snuff. If they couldn't get it to work well for LotRO, I can't imagine how poor it might have turned out for DDO.

But I would be remiss if I didn't point out that mounted combat is a staple, and iconic fantasy trope.

I know it was used in real life but I'm not particularly educated on how well mounted combat was used or how feasible it was outside of charging with a spear or other polearm. You see it in a lot of movies where they use standard melee weapons + shield but seems like there'd be a lot more dead horses in real life combat if the non-mounted fighters were fighting smart... but fighting smart and realistic is seldom done in movies. On the other hand part of the reason I'm not particularly educated on mounted combat is what little I have seen (photos)/read of actual combat was brutal, ruthless, and a measure of the worst of human cunning. *applies brain bleach* More fantasy please.

not much harm done there, any hub in Tera pretty much looks like a One Piece convention anyway :)

I have no doubt trained specialists can pull off the most impressive feats, but probably riding and aiming for individual targets was really not the norm for such troops. But in battle, aiming in the genereal direction of the enemy line while riding is certainly possible effectively. The advantage of mounted archers is their mobility I suppose, you do not have to shoot while riding at all. You can move to a new position faster than unmounted archers, form your line and start firing. All things considered shooting while riding was probably a strategy used more to harass than to kill loads of enemies.

Was waiting for this and almost commented directly to the previous comment. THIS is the ONLY situation that short bows would be preferable to long bows. Long bows generally require too much pull (draw weight for the archery enthusiasts) to be used on horse back not to mention the size makes them unwieldy. As far as how common it was.. there was a whole army that invaded europe that relied heavily on it.. and it was their secret weapon at the time.

I don't foresee mounted combat ever being a thing in DDO but if it was it would certainly give use to a few weapons that are much more useful for mounted combat than they are on foot.

Edit: It's worth noting that none of the models in game seem to actually be long bows.. generally long bows are almost as long as the archer is tall. (5'5 and under is a short bow again for those archery enthusiasts that would flay me if i wasn't more specific)

I feel like I already shot spells off a magic carpet... in 1994.

Fireball and meteor storm were still top of the spell chain even then.

I hope they add a lot more non-horse mounts. EverQuest has loads of different mounts. Go to a populated area in EQ and there are people on flying carpets, giant lizards, wolves, giant snails, reindeer, raptors, giant bunny rabbits, tigers, wyverns, and many more. I was hoping for something like that eventually when DDO introduced mounts. EQ introduced their flying carpet mount with the expensive bundles of their arabic themed expansion a couple years ago, The Burning Lands I think it was called. I wanted one, but I resisted buying more than the base bundle since I don't play EQ but maybe 2 or 3 weeks a year for nostalgia. I'm so ridiculously far behind in that game, I gave up years ago.
