View Full Version : Protection from Evil not granting immunity from mental control

The Distracting Fantasy mobs in the Twelve Quest, Memory Lapse
cast a spell called 'change of heart' which is a mental compulsion to change sides and displays as a blue cap on a player's head.
protection from evil is NOT working to protect players against this and I have a feeling (and am in the process of testing) that it is not working vs other mental compulsions.
Protection from Evil 'wards the target against magical controls and compulsions, providing complete immunity to spells such as Dominate person, dominate monster, command, greater command, etc.'
Players planning for gear, especially on the Hardcore League, where gear is hard to come by, and decisions can literally mean you succeed in the event or fail, need to be able to rely on spell effects working as intended.
Perhaps Distracting fantasies are not evil, and therefore not covered by this protection? Perhaps the immunity is not conferred when Protection from Evil is cast from a potion or a wand?
I am posting here in hopes that the spell is corrected to work as intended, no matter where it exists, whether cast by a player, drunk from a potion, cast from a wand, or equipped on a piece of gear.

Perhaps Distracting fantasies are not evil
They are lawful evil outsider so the spell is bugged in some way.
I tested Absolute Law: Immune
Old Holy(requires evil aligned enemy): Worked
Evil Outsider Bane: Worked
If you are using the Protection from Evil level 1 spell it does have a listed bug (via wiki) that the compulsion effect duration never got the update to start with 5 minutes so it might just be your duration for that effect running out. Similar things happen when you are dispelled, such as with shield; you can still have the icon and +4 bonus to AC but no magic missile immunity.
Either way I will do my best to pin down the issue.

I'm guessing it's bugged. Maybe the CC effect is missing a flag, maybe the immunity isn't working IDK.
Like how Poison immunity doesn't actually work on 95% of poisons, or Glacial wrath checks if the target is immune to mental effects.

Prot from evil never checked their alignment - was too complicated, so just worked against everyone.
Given memory lapse is a level 6 quest, it's a fair assumption the duration is lasting 5m+ anyway, given the base level of the quest.
I suspect it'll be fixed when FOM protects from paralysis. And high fort and not auto-failing 1's on poison checks will prevent me from poison paralysis.
I love sschin.

Protection from evil protects you against the Command spell, and domination by vampires. That's really about it.

It protects from whatever it is that succubi cast in Weapons Shipment as well. I recall many years ago that the potion form did not work and I assume still does not. I have a little hoard of wands, which do work in the cases mentioned here.

Interestingly, DDO Wiki says PFE protects from Dominate Person/Monster, Command and Greater Command.
Looks like Charm Person/Monster is not included, though I doubt its WAI.

DDO Wiki says
And the wiki has never been wrong about anything, ever.

IIRC, it doesn't cover greater command, too -- or the PFE from items doesn't cover it. Had an issue with this back pre-sharn.

Great thank you for the awesome feedback. I had a feeling it was not working properly.
So any devs reading this,
Protection from Evil is bugged similarly to Proof Against Poison and Proof Against Disease (all occurrences, whether items, augments)
are bugged and not providing the immunity they should grant to the player.
Protection from Evil as per the 5e rules 'target also can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed by aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead.
In DDO, Fear Immunity covers frighten; Protection from Evil in DDO should grant temporary immunity all forms of domination, charm, and mental compulsion including the 'change of heart' cast by the distracting fantasies in Memory Lapse.
My concern is going into future hardcore league events, where players do not have any gear or money, and are utilizing anything they find to survive, that the basic protections are not functioning and will lead to player deaths. Proof against Poison, Proof Against Disease, Protection from Evil - these all need to be fixed to grant the immunities they confer.
