View Full Version : Freezing in place but NOT server lag?

Hi all, so lately (past week or so?) I have been having these really bad glitches where my character will freeze in place for upwards of 30 seconds and I cannot figure out what is causing it. At first I thought it was server lag but I have come to the realization that it is on my end somewhere. When the freeze happens, anyone in party, other than me, can run around in my screen with no visual glitching or rubberbanding like what would happen with server lag. Even mobs will move to where my character actually is on the server and will attack fluently and move about no problem. When this happens, my chat stops completely and I am unable to do anything but sit in place and wait it out while the rest of the game world moves on as if nothing is wrong. I cannot move around, jump or interact with anything and messages typed in chat will not display at all. I can however, cast spells that do no damage, drink pots to no effect and watch everything in my screen move around as if nothing was lagging but my actual character, even my pets move around and attack np.

Yesterday I was running with another player and it was happening frequently, to the point that I was basically useless inside the quest. After stating what was going on, he had said that he had the exact same problem after the last game update and it was his graphics driver that was causing it and updating that had fixed it for him. This, however, did not work for me and I am still having major freezing issues.

Things I have tried:

Booting into safe mode and uninstalling graphics driver with DDU
Booting back into normal mode and reinstalling the latest graphics driver
Rebooting my router and modem
Changing out the ethernet cord
Drinking lots of beer (This kind of worked :P )

Comp Specs:
CPU I7-4790k
GPU EVGA GTX 1070 FTW
RAM 32GB G.Skill DDR3 2400
SSD 500Gb Samsung 970 Evo Pro (Game is installed here)

Router is Netgear Nighthawk R7000

Anyway I am going to completely uninstall and reinstall DDO tonight but I wanted to post this here just in case that does not work and maybe you guys/girls might have an idea of what is going on.

I have windows update completely disabled so I don't think it's that and I do not have Adobe installed. The way that it freezes though makes it seem non network related, or at least not upload speed? I can refresh web pages in my other screen while my character is locked up and they reload instantly. It is really weird.

Over the past 5 days lag has been atrocious. I've been having 2-3 sec pauses in public areas, quests lagging out. I did a shroud that was honestly comical. I'd love Cordovan to live steam that run, what an embassment of a game. Why are we pay for this, its a joke. SSG fix this lag issue, stuff the updates, the nerfs, all the bs, fix your game. Finally let's talk about load screens, why the hell do i constantly have to reset my client cause the load screen get hung up....please fix this rubbish!!!

While I agree with the fact that the lag in this game has become almost unbearable, in this case I don't think it is on them. If you could see what happens in my screen when this freezing occurs, you'd see that it is not the same as server lag. The game itself carries on perfectly on my screen and ONLY my character is stuck in place. It's like my upload speed is broken but my download speed is perfect. So I can see what is happening server side but cannot send commands from my client to the server. It is really weird and I've never experienced it in this game before.

another possibility is the lag is happening regionally - so if internet in your state is having a problem, you would lag out but other players
in different areas would not.

so you have like 3 kinds of lag

Problem at game server
Problem in your region
or problems at your end.

If other players are ok, then that leaves the last 2

I am very close to a hub and have fiber optics ( :-D )
so if I lag, it is the Server or me.

not sure if that helped but at least you can narrow down the issue.

You can actually see everyone else moving around while you are frozen? It’s not a network issue. It sounds oddly like a keyboard issue. Unplug any USB devices if you have any.

Yep, everyone and everything around me moves freely. I can see other players fighting mobs with no rubberbanding or glitching and when I ask them if they're lagging as well, it's always just me. I can see my pets fighting things and moving around no problem, I can cast spells, drink pots, type into chat but it won't display until after the freeze breaks and then everything happens all at once like typical lag. I'm currently reinstalling DDO as we speak and if that doesn't work then I guess I will try and reboot my modem and router again. Other than that, I am at a loss.

I booted up Warframe and a couple other steam games that I play to test if they behave the same and so far it is only DDO, but to be fair, I did not play them long enough to fully rule it as DDO specific. This is very frustrating because I just made an alt account and purchased all the xpacs/vip status for it so I can join the multiboxer crowd and I can't even hardly play. :( Hopefully this reinstall works out!

In the options you can bring up a latency ping and packet loss icon. Mouse over it to see what it says.
It changes colour from green, yellow red. Red usually meant you have disconnected. I get yellow when my internet is playing up.

I've had times where I'll get the yellow icon in the top center for my bandwidth having issues. Usually that coincides with the wife watching something on TV, my son streaming on his phone and the fact my computer is on the third floor with the router on the first.

It could be that your BW is getting stretched thin.

I know Windows still forces updates through even though I have that disabled and I've had to close the game down only to find the update being pushed in the background.

How old are your router and modem? You may be seeing the warning signs of failing equipment, especially if it seems to occur less after resetting the connections. Your ISP may have something failing as well. Run a traceroute during one of the lag episodes and rule out an offending hop.

I did a search on the web and found the same issue from a player on LOTRO (Ironic). The post was recent, August 2020, so perhaps you could contact that poster and ask if they found a solution.

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?682035-Character-freeze-see-others-moving-talking

I work with some GPUs and there's a possibility of it glitching in a rare way. If you have an onboard CPU with a built in GPU (like a HDMI, DP, VGA) port, perhaps you could try that output for video and see if the same problem occurs. Not sure if there's an easy way for you to duplicate the issue so you can test this.

Although, GPUs tend to show problems with the entire graphics instead of isolation on a Character. As you mentioned you can drink potions or cast spells .. does that show an animation of arms moving or the timers on the hotbars moving? This could be a calculation being performed which isn't completing to display on your screen. Once that calculation completes, it sends the data to your game to fully complete the action. That rarely can be GPU hardware or driver related.

Could be another program grabbing keyboard and mouse focus.

Next time this happens Alt-TAB quickly, until your focus is back into DDO. If that works, you gotta figure out whats going on in your system.

side note: My daughters (5yo) manage to do this on the laptops they play DDO on, I don't know how the **** they do it but it happens, it usually stems from them getting too nervous/excited on the keyboard during battle and they are face rolling. The observational key is the mouse icon, is it DDOs clunky looking or the windows mouse?

Short term solution: try tumbling. Really. I find my occasional lockups are solved with a quick tumble.

Long term solution: reset your key mapping to default. I have had no further lockups since doing so. It may be that some accidental key combination is making your character stand and await the second half said combination.

Good luck.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Occasionally my character gets bugged and stuck and can't walk, not at all lag-related, but when I Tumble away from where I was stuck, everything is fine again.

I'm glad you mentioned this because I actually noticed that when this happens, there is no yellow or red icon that normally pops up in the top center of my screen during actual server lag.

I will try this and report back but I don't think this is the case because keyboard input works in-game while I am frozen. IE: casting spells makes the spell go off and the timer start but no damage, jumping has my character do the jump animation but not actually leave the ground, typing in chat doesn't show but is recorded as it immediately shows up anything I have typed instantly once the freeze up ends.

Ok I will try this out, thank you for the suggestion. I set DDO to reinstall last night before bed and I will test it out once I get home from work and see how it goes.

Not sure if it's related, but I've been getting freezes as well. Only thing is, for me everything on my screen freezes, it's like a screen shot. Game is continuing for others...
I figure it's because I'm playing on a Mac - but this is a new issue for me.
It's not server lag because everyone else is moving fine... mighty annoying and on bad days, game isn't playable for me.

Bit of a long shot, but some routers (wireless ones in particular) buffer up and down links to minimize packet framing and improve overall throughput. They can also prioritize some traffic in favor of others. I don't know the strict terminology but one of the basic settings for prioritization is Quality of Service or QoS. Sending the gaming traffic (which is rather small actually) as quickly as possible instead of bunching it all up and sending it in bursts is the goal. Some routers have dead simple QoS settings such as "Gaming", but I imagine it's going to be a bit more complicated than that. You would also have to propagate changes to every network layer between you and the ISP, e.g. the cable modem and any in-home router you are using.

You could also just try resetting your routers in case they got confused, or try a hard wire connection. If the hard wire connection works, then it's very likely that you can fix it through the modem/router config pages.

I should add that some ISPs pull tricks with buffering as well. That will be much harder to fix if that is the problem.

Or you could wait for winter games to end. Just sayin':rolleyes:

Our events always cause lag.

Call your internet service provider and have then run a check on your internet.

to be fair to the OP I did (recently) freeze in mid-air ... briefly
it did not look or feel like regular lag

just saying
happened only once

This may sound silly, but I was having the exact same issue. It ended up being my keyboard. The directional keys(WSAD) were worn out and would get stuck and stop me from moving for a few seconds. If I tapped them then I would get free from it. Just a thought.
