View Full Version : Could we have a pass through old named loot to bring it into line

I'm not asking for new stuff to be added to old loot, just to bring it into line with current play.
Two examples:
Just completed the Threnal series, and took the Kundarak Trooper's Shield for the Heavy Fort augment - but the augment slot is still of the old variety and so you have to use the legacy augment remover to extract it. If you wanted to actually use the shield with the new augment system, you'd have to remove the hvy fort augment, log out, back in, then place a new augment in the slot (maybe even the same Hvy Fort augment).

The old named items such as Seraphim (L11) and Epic Seraphim (L27) are both still at basic Hallowed and Sacred, while random loot outstrips them at L7 or 8 with Hallowed 3 or Sacred 4 (that type of thing)

In the Lam forums, Lynnabel tossed around updating Ravenloft gear to scale with other items of the same level. For example, ML29 items with a +19 stat would become +21 like other ML29 items. That would be a fantastic change.

I'm totally with you on making old loot relevant again, but your specific example on the kundarak shield is a bit odd- if you're going to use the same augment, there's no reason to unslot/reslot it. It change the UI appearance, but there will be no gameplay difference.
If you were to slot something ELSE there, or if you were talking about an item that comes preslotted with an augment that was affected by the revamp then you'd have a reason to change it to the new system.
Just letting you know so you don't waste your time.

But again, on the general subject of an old-loot pass through, that'd be cool.

They have been slowly updating old named loot, such as Phiarlan Carnival, Sharn Syndicate, Deneith Sentinels series, Catacombs, Deleras, and some I may have forgotten. They will probably get to those other ones eventually.

Honestly, I was upset when they updated the Old House P loot. Actually it is one example where the old loot was better than the newer stuff. Thankfully, I had a collection of the better stuff (at least on my main account) but will no longer be able to get it on my new account I made over the summer nor will players who recently joined Eberron. The remaining loot, even after the update, is inferior to Random Loot and Potions.

OP,
Now if you are asking them to update the "classic" Epic Gear (level 20) to current, or better, standards (i.e. I'm looking at you scaling Fort and Vitality *angry face*) I would support it. I understand that you will have to regrind gear already upgraded but it will give players a reason to head back to that content for something other than Tokens.

So...
"upgrading" Epic S/S/S gear = Yes!
"upgrading" Heroic gear = FAT NO!

As usual, my use of the English language (despite being English) is not clear enough.

For my first example, I was OK with the old named stuff I have in my personal bank space, shared bank space, TR cache and backpack to be untouched; its then up to me to update any or all of them as I choose in my own time. But I was surprised that all new loot - named or random - didn't come with the new type augment slots as standard. I wasn't suggesting changing what actually slotted, that's a different topic. It just seemed strange that for an item I was just given in the end reward for the Threnal chain to still have the old augment slots.
When I say new loot here, I mean any item picked up (from anywhere) after the feywild expansion dropped, not just the actual loot from the feywild.

I have to say that, as far as augments are concerned, I disagree completely. Nothing sucks worse than pulling a useless named item (Drowned Priest's Torch, for example) and NOT being able to feed it to your sentient weapon because it has a dang augment pre-slotted. I'm not wasting a Jeweler's Toolkit to remove the augment, and there is no other way to get it out. But now, with Legacy Augment Unslotters, it's just a copper or two... I can feed the cruddy item and I get to keep the augment for later use to boot! It's a win-win. In fact, I made a thread directly THANKING the devs for this lack of change:

https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/519570-Thank-you-for-quot-essentially-quot-free-augment-unslots-on-named-food

As for going through and updating old loot to meet current Ability Stat, Damage, and other effects, then I'm totally down. Too much of the old named loot is just waaaay behind the power curve for its level. There are ML 15 items with higher Ability bonus, Deadly, Resistance, etc. than ML 20-25 loot (Gianthold, for example).

I'm happy with old loot dropping with old augments. You can unslot them for a few copper, and feed the item.
Some augments are valuable by themselves. TTT has this torch that comes with ML24 devotion, and some GH stuff has insightful ability augments (which have been secretly updated to give +5 instead of stated +2). You can unslot them for copper now.

Yeah I agree, being able to recover augments from loot still is a feature, not a bug

Nice catch! There's insightful ML24 augs on EH loot and exceptional on EN...which might actually be super annoying to farm at 8% drop rate or whatever even when the quests are easy :D

So if the old loot gets updated to modern values, do the mobs get updated to modern values too? Or people just want (for eg) gianthold to start dropping current-scale gear and still be their wimpy old selves?

I would say if they can run a script/query per pack with a % increase, absolutely yes ( if they need to do it 1 by 1, then probably nope), they could maybe still create a list of older content, and assign the reaper init script to make their reaper scaling harder/matching new stuff.

Level 13
---------
Old content:
Orc Berserker 500hps, 20 fort save

==vs==

New Content:
Elven Ranger 1000hps, 30 fort save

(( Those are not exact numbers but not far. ))

Content age to difficulty is very strange for new players, more intuitive to find out the actual difficulty by quest level.

I wish they'd used coding techniques popular since 1972 to scale things from a single point of control. Would be nice for them (and us) going forward, too -- in case they ever decide to scale stats up again.

BTW, yeah, I agree that all L26 items should have modern L26 stats (or whatever level). Ravenloft would be a great place to start. It's always amusing to pull an old raid item that has worse stats than lootgen of the same level.

Do we really need more powerful loot -> more powerful crowds in level 4 ?
I sense an arms race here.

But will existing loot automatically update? Or will we have to re-farm everything from the ground up, as usual?

The Power Creep (PC) question...
Personally, the ship has sailed on PC so best to keep the NPC's where they are. Allow players the ability to get "easier" loot at the lower range so they can contribute at the higher range. Everyone has to cross the same river (levels 20 to 29) and allowing people multiple ways to cross the river (i.e. different difficulty content within the same level range) allows variety for every skill of player. Some bridges are easier than others. Nothing inherently wrong with that.

For example, we "officially" have Ravenloft, Disciples of Rage, WPM, Introduction to Sharn, Sharn x 2, Introduction to Fey, and Fey all competing hilariously for level 29 gear. So I understand your PC question. It ruins the game in the end.

Indeed DDO has two issues with items, first is DDO still has not a sufficient item system at all, and second 90% or more of the quests drop named items who are not up to date and for this reason mostly garbage/trash.
In my opinion, ALL items (random crafted named) should have in the future only ONE main effect and in addition, 2-3 secondary effects you can add with effect shards (also random crated and named) and 1-2 augment slots (also random crafted named) and all items, effect shards and augments should be compatible with each other.
All effects should be dependant on the character level and the quality level of the item (if the quality level is higher you can more power at your current character level), this can be done either with effects (in my opinion ideally) designed for any character level or items with Minimum Level or Maximum levels(max lvl items mean they scale to a max character level).
After these first steps, ALL items should strictly follow this rule until you figure out a fundamentally better system and THEN you can go to overhaul all items in DDO.

Many things in DDO could have an overhaul, not only the items and you should basically have a big first plan and then start to work on the coding and this coding could be done in a new game engine :D
