View Full Version : "For Item Purposes" ? - Half-Elf Dilletante

Hello,

I still don't quite understand the Half-Elf's "Dilletante" system

It says "For item purposes you are treated as ..." ... a certain class.

My question now is : What exactly is meant with this "for item purposes" ? And what items exactly are affected by this ?

So far I've understood it so - but I'm not sure at all whether I understood that correctly, hence my question here - that there are items which can only be used by a certain class.

Like ... a wand with a spell that has no UMD check for ... a Warlock. Or a Cleric for example.
But ... is this limited to only wands ? Or do there exist otgher items affected by this "for item purposes" as well ?

I do know that there are for example certain items supporting the Cleric's "Turn Undead" ability. To other classes, these items are of no use.
But ... a Cleric Dilletante can't turn Undead, right ? So, this item makes not much sense for a Half-Elf who is a "Cleric Dilletante".

What else is there of items that can be affected by this "for item purposes" ?

Background is that I plan to do a full Inquisitive this time (for guild runs), with a Half-Elf, but I do wonder what would be the best for solo survivability ?
Since the Inquisitive heavily relies on Charisma, I've decided to use a class which is mainly Charisma-based as well.
A Bard would be nice (more skillpoints), but seems to be a bit difficult in soloing ?
( I'd need Dexterity for Crossbows as well, I thought. )

So, the question arose which Dlletante would be best for survivability. And then I asked myself : "What items are actually meant with that "for item purposes" ? Because ... of course ... I would like to be able to use items which support survivability.

Is someone able to give me examples for this "for item purposes" ? Because I learn best from examples.
And ... I can understand the point with wands. But, what other kinds of items might be meant there ? (Again I'm asking for examples.)

Why? Even with some synergy with the diplomacy skill, it shouldn't mean "heavily relies" imo. And yes, you will definitely need dexterity for any shooting build. (19 for IPS, 21 for combat archery).
Keep in mind that inquisitive does not have any stat-to-damage options for crossbows, so you will either need harper tree or artificer or mechanic (int) or falconry (wis) or fvs as dominant class (wis or cha). Without some stat-to-damage stuff, I believe you would lose a lot of dps.

Bard class doesn't provide any ranged power iirc. For more effective pewpew-ing, I recommend classes with ranged power (and +damage) upgrades.

For extra survivability, paladin (saves) or monk (heal amp) dilettantes are useful, but also require heavy investment in the improved dilettante racial enhancements to make it worthwhile.

By the feat description, caster dilettante feats only offer wand/scroll use, no mention on other items, except the artificer's knowledge stuff for +1 caster level. But since you asked for item examples, I guess you could equip a Cursed Skull with the wizard dilettante, or Tesyus with the paladin dilettante. :)

The main problem with these is that if you take cleric dilettante to use healing consumables, you will still need umd for arcane scrolls like teleport/fire shield/invis etc... and same for arcane dilly feats + divine scrolls.
Edit: actually, caster dilettantes can be useful for the other type (arcane or divine) of mage to be able to skip umd checks for most scrolls. A wisdom focused fvs with wizard dilly could dump umd and charisma, for example.

Side note: fighter dilettante gives full access to martial weapons, without the need for splashing or spending feats. But it's irrelevant for a crossbow build ofc.

For item purposes means things with class restrictions - wands & certain orbs etc. only need a single level in an appropriate class to have 100% success chance without UMD, whereas scrolls need the "count as having X levels in a class" - so for example Heal is cast from memory (for a cleric) from level 11, but you can use the scroll (with an 85% success chance) with 9 cleric levels regardless of UMD & having sufficient points in the appropriate dilly feat counts in the same way.

Thank you. That was helpful for me.
