1 hire a business person
2 release private servers so others can build businesses around the game and help keep it alive
3 release game on steam as a single player game, starting with vanilla and each pack is an update every few months
4 DDO2
a glaringly obvious path out of this current mess that leads you to a modern game

You forgot the 2 most important things.
Wizards must want a DDO2.
Someone needs to invest a substantial amount of money in it.

Also has a really bad transition where there's few players in both.
And everyone who owns a substantial amount of content (let alone tomes/PL's/items etc) causes a bunch of awkwardness; I don't want to have to re-buy stuff, but if you give it to me for free how does new stuff get paid for?
If Wizards doesnt want it, hit up Pathfinder.

Problem (for me at least) is I like D&D 3.5. I grant you, DDO's version of 3.5 has strayed really, really far from PnP, but it still has somewhat of a 3.5 feel to it. If DDO2 were to come along and be, say, 5th edition, there's a pretty good chance I'd never even try it (never tried AC2, after all, even after playing AC1 for years). While I wouldn't mind some company creating a 5th edition D&D MMO (and might even try it, eventually, if I heard enough good things about it), I'd just as soon DDO stick with 3rd edition rules and focus on QOL issues like lag & bug fixes. Basically, I like the game that DDO is, and would rather play that than some hypothetically "better" (i.e. newer) version, just wish it worked a little better.

OMG - I disagree with just about everything you just wrote. I play with about 30 plus players either in guild or collectively on TeamSpeak and all of us love DDO as it exists today. That doesn't mean that as with all things continued improvement should be sought.
In Summary
No - To releasing DDO on private servers.
No - To releasing DDO on Steam
No - To a DDO2
Yes - To a business person if one does not already exist as this could not hurt.
The biggest thing I think that DDO could benefit from is ramped up marketing. I have been saying this since the early Turbine days through SSG management.

If Wizards doesnt want it, hit up Pathfinder.
If Wizards doesn't want it then it would not be DDO at all. A big no to that.

Wizards want DDO2 - they want to use their properties to make money. Wether they want SSG to make DDO2 is a completely different question. Someone needs to make a BUSINESS case to them; see point 1

I dont see anything obvious, realistic or remote reasonable in the steps you have outlined. Nor do the steps seem connected in any way. You may need to go into a lot more detail if you want others to understand why this would be a good idea :)

Ok I have a couple of issues with the Idea of a DDO2
The first being why?
I mean we have DDO, which many would feel reluctant to leave, and some are claiming has a drastically low player base.
why would any business created completion which would divide the base further?
Secondly before we talk about a DDO2, we need to see what it would be, if it is just an improved DDO then why not just improve DDO?

My ultimate wish is, that once in the far distant future DDO ceases to exist (perhaps in 10-20 years ?), it will become freeware or an single-player offline game.
I mean, I would *really* like those GM voices (Gygax, Arneson, etc.) to be preserved for future (A)D&D generations ...

If I could transfer my character to ddo2, I would be all over it, even if it meant buying all the packs again.
Without character transfer, its a completely different game, that I may or may not be interested in, with emphasis on might not.

If they upgraded it to a modern game engine, it would be DDO 2, or DDO 2.0

As long as that could be done in a way to allow some kind of transfer it wouldn't be to bad, but I am guess we might be talking big bucks and some time down the line
Edit just saw your response above the one I responded to. Ditto :D

Seriously these DDO2 threads are a waste of time.

Yup, I was seriously ill just after the Hardcore event ended, probably in part to do with late nights trying to keep to a commitment with a static group, anyway prior to that I spent very little time on the forum. but being laid up in bed a lot with my Ipad I started browsing around, (as sort of online rear view window)and there is a pretty large amount of time sink posts.
I was thinking about starting one to demand that SSG gave all players 100 inch 4k Flat screens:cool:
