I'm just returning to the game after a 4-year break, and I noticed that the artificer class is not free to VIP. I could have sworn that it used to be free to VIP, and several friends of mine have told me that they didn't have to pay for it. Was there a change at some point, or are we all wrong about it being free to VIP (at some point)?

I don't think it was ever free for VIP.

It’s never been free to vip but it is unlockable via favor on a per server basis.

Like drow and Favored Soul, Artificer started out as a favor-only unlock which later got added to DDO Store. It was never free for VIPs.

Correct, never was, still isn't.

Non-contradictory statements.

You can indeed earn Arti "for free" either via 150 House Cannith Favor, which means either owning Secrets of the Artificers (99 favor)(and VIP do have free access to those quests) plus doing some Cannith Challenges (which can be done free via daily tokens), OR getting a (nearly?) perfect score on ALL Cannith Challenges plus the free Level 28 quest (https://ddowiki.com/page/Brothers_of_the_Forge).

As other people said it’s never been free

Thank you all for the replies. They did clear up the confusion for me. I think my friends must have done the quests and had the adventure pack.

I appreciate the help. :)

NP, your friends did not communicate clearly.

Arti has gone on sale in the past, and there are some holiday sales just around the corner. Just fyi.

Nobody runs the raids any more (I think) so to get artificer without them you need to average about 3.2 stars from the Cannith challenges, 66 total. It's very doable even by soloing, I actually just did that a couple of days ago.

(Edit - nm, for some reason thought you were referring to the quest pack as a whole, raid+quests, not just the raids.)

There are 21 challenges (some heroic, some epic, which are all counted separately), which give 1 favor/star, and you need 150 Cannith Favor (https://ddowiki.com/page/House_Cannith#Favor_Ranks) to get Arti.

(At an average of ~2.4/ stars you can get 50 favor and access to the crafting supplies, Marks of House C etc.)

Anyway, for anyone new to this, it's possible* to get 150 without the Level 19(!) adventure pack - but it sure helps:

(* This is tough. If you get a near-perfect score on all the 21 challenges (all but three 6-star!) for 123/126 possible favor, plus the one (1) F2P quest, a level 28 (https://ddowiki.com/page/Brothers_of_the_Forge) for 27 more favor... ~that~ will get you there.)

(@ all: Anyone can run any Challenge w/ Challenge Tokens, which are free, 1/day: https://ddowiki.com/page/Challenge_Token#Challenge_Tokens )

(** Btw - SotA is on sale this week, 487 DP, 25% down from normal 650. Artificer class (https://ddowiki.com/page/Artificer) full cost is 995, tho' it's been on sale for less, rarely as low as half-off.)
