Without a full compare/contrast, here's another, Str-based, so doesn't require Harper:

Remember that most any first-life "trapper" is going to be highly gear dependent - without good gear, any trapping at/near level will be a challenge. An Int build will have it easier, but either is very doable.

for people (with rogue splashes) on the edge of trapping capability there's always dropping 7 AP in Mechanic for +3 to all trap skills, and on this build you can also drop 1 AP on the human +4 skill boost. i found these very helpful on fresh account builds, and you can always reset them later once you've built up some resources

As a new/(returning from prior to 2009 F2P changes), this build looks like it could fill the role I'm aiming for in a static group of a three newbs.
The only thing I don't follow and may have missed here is what spells do we select as we level?

Bearing in mind this is an older build which predates some recent changes:
My main concern for a build like this is trying to do too much on a first-lifer. In particular, Warchanter DCs are based on CHA while melee DPS is based on INT via Harper. Also not sure why OP takes Frozen Fury but not Spinning Ice (AP shortage I guess); nor why they took Smooth Flourishes (CHA to damage) when they put their level-ups into INT, which suggests INT to damage would be better.
Also that gear list seems a bit - shall we say - optimistic for a newbie.

Regarding gear choices for new players, just do your best to pump both Int and Charisma.
Regarding choice of charisma vs int to damage, pick what is best with your gear.
I focused more on Int because of trap skills and reflex saves (I took both Force of Personality and Insightful Reflexes). It also boosts KtA, which helps with Frozen Fury.
At cap, with 68 Int, +22 trap skills item, +6 twist from Shadowdancer, +6 from Second Harmonic Chord (i decided to take 2nd instead of 3rd in the end, helps with trap skills as well as fascinate DC), I can hit 112 search and 110 disable device (not including +7 from kits)
Yes, AP shortage prevents me from taking Spinning Ice. AP are spread thin. I need 23 in Singer for sustaining song, 37 in Warchanter for full BAB, double chant range & T5 chants. Then 13 in Swash for Int to damage and SWF with a buckler. 7 points for Agent for KtA II.
I suppose you can take Spinning Ice instead of sprint chant, but sprint chant is bard's unique feature that benefits entire party in long quests.
I am currently using Scion of Arborea. Ethereal has been nerfed, and Feywild does nothing against mobs with sonic resistance, which there appeared quite a few in RL and Sharn.
Regarding spell choices, focus on buffs. Your spell DCs are inconsequential. Refer to "bard spell list" and "Spell Usefulness" pages on DDO wiki.

Why not Rogue as your first level? That gives you 8 more skill points, which could bump your Open Lock a bit

Yeah, you can do that. You'll have to rearrange feats a bit, since shield mastery is unavailable for rogues.
But net gain will be only 2 points or so, because rogue will end up with 2 points in Perform and Concentration, as opposed to 4 for bard.

That is the "common wisdom", and appropriate in 98% of builds. However, rarely, a build needs either BAB 1 or spell use for the Feat mix - and Rogue 1 does not provide either of those. It's rare, but it happens, and biting the bullet and catching up afterward is the only option.
However, here, you are correct, since this is not (by necessity) one of those builds.

(I feel compelled to question "Hide" here, as afaics it adds almost nothing to the build, not without Move Silently (except the ability to cower without moving). If(?) one wanted a poor-man's sneak, they could take MS and pair that with a Bard's Invisibility spell - far from foolproof, but at least it would work in many situations.
I also have to question calling this a "1st life" build (which implies a new(er) player) but not taking Spot. Admittedly, Veteran players, who have memorized where to Search for traps, could start a new 1st-life alt - but how many would?
There are some other choices I would not share - minimal Open Lock among them - but those quibbles start to become a matter of personal preference, and not a "useless" or crippling choice.)
But net gain will be only 2 points or so, because rogue will end up with 2 points in Perform and Concentration, as opposed to 4 for bard.
If you ignore Spot. I believe the diff ends up as 6 ranks w/ Spot (see below).
But whatever the number, by taking Rogue at Level 1, the skills are indeed improved from the start, and any other differences (mainly in Feats) are gone by Level 6. Some small durability and DPS is lost early by delaying Shield Mastery and Precision, but +4 to Will Saves is gained much earlier - a more or less equal trade, imo.
For skill choices, my preferences reflect the following:
1) Spot is critical for new players. If you're a Vet and building this, ymmv. Admittedly, it is expensive, but for new(er) players it's not open for debate imo.
2) Having both Bluff and Diplomacy is a luxury on a "1st life" build, and one it can't afford - pick one or the other. (I chose Diplo below, simply b/c this build doesn't have a lot of Sneak Attack, but if you solo a lot then... who you gonna throw under the bus, your hire? The cost is identical for either.)
3) Hide is next to useless without Move Silently. (And, if you want to be a trapper w/ Spot, you really can't afford either.)
4) The build needs 7 Balance before Level 9 for the SWF feats - easy. It wants to take full ranks in Balance, but other things are needed first.
5) Raise Dead scrolls are ML 7, and UMD doesn't reach significant levels until mid Heroics anyway, esp for a non-Cha build without PL benefits. No pressing need to max that earlier than 7. (Below, it's maxed by L5 simply because the points need to go somewhere.)

Thanks for the feedback!
Hide w/o MS is indeed an oversight. I maxed Hide for the old version of Scion of the Ethereal Plane, but today, there's no point in taking this feat.
I agree with all of your points.
Spot is another cross-class skill however, and costs 2 skill points to level most of the time.
If you feel confident without spot, I suggest taking Hide AND Move Silently instead. There are a few quests where you need to disable traps in sight of enemies, in particular VoD.
Regarding feats selection, I would take Insightful Reflexes early, and Precision later.
Drop one of the epic feats to compensate (Blinding Speed can be replaced by Swiftness 15% augment, Improved Bardic Music is kinda weak, Swords to Plowshares only relevant for sickles/kamas)

I am planning on a 2nd Life Swashbuckler/Trapper. 2 levels Rogue. Halfling. Past Life Sorcerer. +2 Tomes for all Stats. 34 point build (for those not familiar with 2nd Life).
In my situation, what would you recommend? Rogue or Bard at 1st level?
I plan to invest first in INT, then CHA, then STR, then DEX, next is CON. WIS is dumped.

Take enough DEX at start to qualify for Precision (13 with tomes).
After that, first INT, then CHA, then CON. dump STR, DEX, WIS.
This is assuming you have access to int to-hit (Harper tree or Wizard EK). Swashbuckler has Int to-damage.
Rogue or Bard 1st level doesnt make huge difference. rogue has 4*(8 + int), bard 4*(6 + int), only 8 points, and it matters even less because You will want to invest in both rogue and bard skills. And regardless which class you take first, you will end up having to put points into cross-class skills. This will reduce the difference even further.

Can you give an advice of how to spend enhancements points while leveling to be effective?
Are there any changes to take in count in current update? Or just follow the build as it is on forst post?
Thank you !
