View Full Version : What to do with old BtC Gear? TR question

Heyas, returning player here...will be TRing in the next few days I hope.
One of the things I hated in the past about TRing was...emptying the TR Cache
I had a couple inventory questions:
1. Is the TR Cache still a PITA?
2. I have a lot of old raid gear (from level 16-20 cap)
A. Some of it seems really outclassed now (thinking stuff like Tharne's Goggles or that cape from DQ that gives me blurry) and Greensteel (it still seems valuable for levels 11-21)
B. It feels really "bad" or "wrong" to delete it because I "worked hard" to get it.
C. Is this stuff useful anymore or should I delete it? Can it be fed to a sentient weapon (I haven't done that stuff yet)
3. Are there any new ways to increase my inventory SIZE? (I have mules like "Docentholder" who...you guessed it...holds my docents) I will even buy stuff from store if it permanently increases my back pack or my Bank size. Maybe there are "Bags" that hold gear now?
Anyway, thanks for any and all information!

Your sentient weapon will gladly consume your useless gear.
Now Tharne's Goggles are not so bad imho.

Trash almost all of it.

There are different approaches.
1. Look at your BtC gear from the perspective of "Can it be useful?"
- Does it stand alone as in does wearing it from level x to x+ cover a specific need
- Is it a situational item that comes in handy
- Is it specific to a playstyle - Such as only useful if you are running a DC caster and not useful on a Melee
2. How easy is it to replace?
- Is this item something that is in a static end reward list
- Is it something you would be willing to farm again for if you determined you needed it?
- Is it a raid item, rare vs common
With named bound items that you don't want the better approach is to feed it to a sentient gem and benefit from the XP. Non-named you may be able to benefit from deconstructing it for Crafting or selling it out right for plat.

Another thing to think about is that SSG has been slowly updating the old gear to be in line with current. I don't think they have done any old raid gear yet, but they have done some packs normal drops.

I keep a handful of things around. Usually heroic GS items and a weapon set. Certain raid items that are useful at certain level ranges for TR. And honestly that's about it. Everything else has been converted to sentient xp. I know others that won't throw anything away. I can TR and be naked piking XP off guildies in a hot minute if there is a TR train going, and set up hot bars at the entrance, do enhancements as we go from quest to quest etc. Those others I refer to sometimes take an hour or more to clean out their TR cache and flip an alt. Just depends really.
I don't have much gear from the medium level epic raids as I was on a break when those came out. I still haven't run CITW or LOB. FWIW.

LTS/LHoX stuff is nuts at level :D and if you don't need armor to get a set bonus for whatever reason it's likely your best choice for many toons (8 effects + aug slot = many more gearing possibilities).

Will that be retroactive?

Will that be retroactive?
Likely not. Fens wasnt even retro when the change was to bta. They have said before that updating existing stuff is a load of work. I am totally ok with farming again if it means getting more changes.

They put a work bench in the Hall of Heroes that you can take Old Raid Gear that they have upgraded to, and for 50 thread you can get an upgraded replacement.
I would assume they will continue doing that with future upgraded items.

For the time it takes to get the threads, you could usually just farm another item. I just fed most of my green steel to a gem. I kept the triple positives as they're raise dead clickies and still decent undead beaters. I've been throwing more and more away as even though it seems like it may be useful *on some future build*, it really isn't. I have kept a green steel immunities item though (fear, blindness, etc. that's still useful at times)
My rule of thumb is, if I haven't used it in ten or so lives, and it's not raid loot that I would have to bother with replacing or bound to account loot I can stash on a mule, I take a real hard look to see if it's worth keeping. I only keep BtC loot that isn't immediately useful if it meets two criteria:
1. Reacquiring the loot would make me hate myself for forcing myself to run content again. Particularly, this is loot that is strong enough for a particular build that I would rate it as something almost necessary, but not universally strong. If it has been obsoleted by newer loot, it's garbage, even if I don't have the newer loot, if it would be easier to get the better loot than reattain the item I have. Basically, I do this check to make sure that I don't hate myself in two lives when I try out that gimmick build that would really love that one piece of loot.
2. Is this loot such that modern DDO will not feasibly allow me to obtain similar/better items? This really only applies to a very few specific random generation loot items from old DDO, but there are a few items that I don't dispense with because I'm too lazy to craft alternatives- ghosttouch weapons, for example, that aren't in the new random loot tables. There are very few items that I save for this purpose, and most aren't BtC, but it's a relevant criteria.
The one exception is loot that is BtCoE- I generally just trash that unless I plan on using it, because in theory I could buy it from the auction house. Now, most of it doesn't show up there, but BtCoE loot is typically old enough that it's been obsoleted by RL/Sharn loot and isn't going to cause regret later. The few exceptions for this are rune arms (because most of those don't show up on the AH), which I do typically keep for variety but I do junk if I know I'm never going to use them. I keep a whole trove of rune arms, docents, and collars on an mule, but the few BtC ones I can't sent over typically are the last to go in my clutter crusade.
It's worth clearing out a bunch of items once or twice a year if you TR very often. It will save you a bunch of time, keep you mindful of what gear you do have and should use, and also make room for new loot that you want more. You'd be surprised, if you're like me, how many duplicates you wind up with over time that you just don't double check.
And yes, you can feed the trash to your sentient weapons if you would like.
Edit: Generally, old raid loot fares better than other BtC gear in terms of still being useful. I wouldn't toss that unless you hit the point where you have a hard time TRing because of junk or you have something that directly obsoletes that item.
