I used to play some permadeath characters on the normal servers with a similar ruleset to hardcore, but after champions were introduced my main one got one-shot fairly quickly, and since then with champions and eventually reapers I have had no desire to play permadeath again. The hardcore server has been a lot of fun though, with more people willing to play non-reaper difficulties meaning that I don't feel forced into r1 when trying to play slower and more tactically. Having so many people to play with is a welcome change to the shortmanning and soloing typically required on the main servers. The excitement of seeing someone a few hours later into a session and knowing you're both still alive, or the horror of seeing the healer for your last dungeons name broadcasted, is exhilarating. I've been keeping track of deaths in my party in my bio so far (Level 9), and have recorded 6 so far with the hope of looking back when I make it to 20 on the friends or acquaintances I met along the way who helped give me a better chance at making it.
I just finished Phiarlan Chapterhouse on elite with no trapper (Actually solo for all but the endfight), and it was some of the most stressful fun I've had it a while. bouncing around a room with force damage spikes desperately trying to pop the correct glyph (I did not come prepared) was terrifying, but incredibly fun.
If anything, I only wish that the rewards were more focused on winning as a community, in line with the cooperative nature of the game. I'm going under the name Kurmanev on the server and I have no idea what rank I am on the leaderboards, or if I'm even on them, and I really don't care. I just love the feeling of completing a night of questing without letting anyone die. Personally I think it would be a lot more fun if the rewards were things like "At least (arbitrary number) accounts get a character to level 20", "At least (arbitrary number) accounts get at least 1750 favor" as well as having the individual favor ones or reaper point ones or whatever the leaderboards are. The fun of DDO isn't, or at least never used to be, about beating everyone else in your party, it's about winning as a team.
Overall I really enjoy hardcore. I'm not looking forward to my inevitable death, but it's just one of the hazards of being an adventurer.
