View Full Version : How did you die?

I'm loving the Hardcore server so far. Managed to hit level 3 and so far haven't died.
But all those world announcements make me curious.
So, if you are one of the unfortunates and feel like sharing - HOW DID YOU DIE? And what quest were you in when it happened?
Did you forget feather fall? Did you think the water was deeper? Did you brave Reaper 10?
I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to know :D
[And I will post my death which is inevitable!]

Not dead yet, but I've come danger close a couple of times when Kobold Shamans and their lightning bolts of doom double-strike me just about the time my resist pot runs out. I'm fairly sure that those lightning bolts have accounted for more than a few.

Great idea for a thread!
I haven't died yet, but am only about half way through 3. I - almost - wiped in Haverdasher Elite last night when I pulled too much aggro from the scorpion room w/the named.

#1 - Tangleroot part 2 end room with the final prisoner. Champion Hobgoblin Slayer with Demon Soul didn't care about my Webs and butchered my level 4 baby sorc.
#2 - Holding level 8 on my Arti, cleaning up Sharn Syndicate favor, first trap room in Dirty Laundry on R1, bam, double spike hit with failed saves -> dead.
On live, I would have jump + Featherfalled over to the box and disarmed it without thinking. On HC... I couldn't have made the jump, probably much less have hit the gear to disarm it. It's crazy (and super fun!)

Rumors--
Level 10 Sorcerer just died on elite in the Pit.
Healer type died at level 6 last night, when a trapper blew up a box that exploded and killed multiple party members.

In my case I know the trap is there, you just have to try and dash/power through it. I think I darted when I should have dashed, or maybe I leapt when I should have rolled. lol

I *really* wish they'd added this to the announcements. "SuchandSo walked into a trap and died Level 2" or "BossyGnoll drowned at Level 3" or "Earthbound forgot she didn't have Feather Fall and died, Level 2" or "HighFlier jumped off the guild airship and died, Level 10."
I haven't died yet, but my oldest son/guildmate died to a trap, skipped Korthos on the second round to come play with us, and was too low level when the Kobold Shaman decided to put a lightning bolt right in his face.
We're having sooo much fun.

I haven't died yet. However. I was in a full group doing R1 level 2 quests. We were mostly level 4. The group leader was very happy, excited, and all around good spirits. We stepped in Kobold New Ringleader and he died within 15 seconds.
It has been a while since I laughed as hard as I did. You know, one of those laughs where you try to stop and just become louder as a result.
It wasn't laughing at player. It was laughing at the mechanic of the server. Knowing a reroll is the only option got me laughing once I witnessed the reality of the situation.
I understand the rage moments, and the imminent frustrations players will have. But you have to see the humor and fun in all of this. The Harecore server is full on entertainment. Hilarious till the end.

At the end of elite ww5 and the quest is over, xp awarded, and for some reason, the warlock opens a door with the kobold shaman. The other healer and I are in the process of FOing and some distance away (out of sight) and it's too late. Warlock dead, shazam, lightning bolt.
Naturally, two other characters go over to help (non-permadeath instincts I guess) and ka-ping, ka-pow, lightning bolted. By this time, I'm out, and as dead is dead there's no reason to investigate and if it's one-shotting toons that are investigating, well, no thanks. The party leader is next, gets incapped and the other healer and I head back in and get (heal) him from -8. One dead kobold champ, three (nearly 4) dead party members all out of post-quest curiosity.
Take-aways:
1. Post-quest optional investigations alone, bad.
2. Kobold champ shamans at low level, bad.
3. If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.
Edit: wrote this before i had coffee. I know how to spell worst.

Cleric, War Domain working into Radiant Servant. I had Resist Energy, so that was enough, plus I was able to hit the runes, which makes most of that lightning a non-issue.

I've tried this twice and died once, other rogue died the second time as well. We are having trouble timing this. Where do you stand? Should we move closer to the wall and use the rune? The time it takes to activate we keep getting hit. zZap

I thought, for almost 10 years now, that off to the sides you were safe from the lightning traps. Oh sure, you might get hit on your way trying to get under cover of the low ceiling side alcoves, but once in there I always thought it was safe. However this time I was actually standing well inside the alcove after having fought an undead or two, for several seconds, about to start heading out (already made it to the lever and was on my way out) when I got nailed by two lightning strikes in a row.

Yeah. I think at higher levels, such dots are going to be the worst; when you can see the writing on the wall and are just trying everything... anything to survive the inevitable.

I'm having a blast so far! Sure, I've died a few, but that makes it even more fun.
LvL 5, champs in Where There's Smoke on R1
LvL 6, held during end fight of STK p2 on Elite
LvL 5, 2 plague reapers The Smuggler's Warehouse on R1
Lessons learned/remembered! Currently, I'm level 7, almost 9, with 2 reaper pts and all quests completed up to the level 3s and almost done with the 4s. So much fun!
For me, the best part of this is the density of the population. I've never seen so many toons in Korthos, Harbor, and Market! Reminds me somewhat of the early days of the game.
In case I haven't mentioned this enough, I am super super enjoying this event!

I'm amazed how loose some people are playing...
I mean, not even healing themselves... When you are at 32/67 hp on a perma-death server, you'd think one would take a second to heal, or at LEAST, not be the first one to charge into a room.
But I saw someone die last night charging forward like that.
I'm thinking I may drop down to hard for Syndicate and Catacombs. I just want to get through them, get some good BtA gear, put it in the shared bank, and then go back to living on the edge. Maybe do them again on R1 after that.
I expect to die at some point, but if I have NOTHING in the shared bank to show for it, it will be harder to start over.

I agree - need to get my House P and J buffs ...
I spend time breaking and gathering everything to get plat for pots - I have some cures, neutrilze, remove curse. I drink all the buff pots I find, iummediately. I have enough collectables now to start turning them in as well. Those little things can make a BIG difference.

- Famine reaper frost lance
- Poison trap in sanguine heart (after getting impatient waiting for a trapper to enter the quest)
- Carnage reaper spawning behind me
- Champion hobgoblin trip + double swing
- Famine reaper frost lance
- Champion ghasts with their paralysing touch
- Famine reaper frost lance..
In my experience the only truly scary thing so far is that **** famine reaper in level 3-4 quests. Cold resist, cold absorbtion, full health, doing it at max character lvl - still 1 shot by a *targeted* spell, no chance of dodging that unless you are around a corner at time of casting or something.

I was playing on my level 4 Eldritch Knight Wizard, who I thought was pretty bulky. We got to the end of the quest the 'Kobolds new ring leader' on elite.
This was where it all ended for my character. We were at the final room of the dungeon; the point where the party was set to confront the red named ogre that I assume was the 'kobolds new ringleader'. Everyone stopped right in front of the final door, so I dropped about 3 webs in anticipation for what would be come running through. Crowd control would be my contribution.
Well the party opened the doors and then literally nothing happened. Crickets. No one moved for about 20 seconds. The webs I put up were about to disappear and I was getting impatient. The webs were also blocking my view and whatever was inside must have been around a corner because I could not see anything. So I couldn't figure out why no one was moving.
I didn't know this quest so I decided to run through the doors to prompt everyone to start moving. Well that was a mistake.
As soon as I went through I saw the ogre everyone else must have been looking at. It came jogging towards me. I tried to run away the moment I recognized what it was, but then I saw it wind up the 3 swing strike that ogres do. And then before I could even blink my character was in the land of lost souls.
It gave me an appreciation for how sudden deaths must be for these adventurers. Just a black out and then next, waking up in the land of lost souls.
Other deaths I have witnessed:
Mostly the teams I am have run with have had very bleak survival chances. We have discussed how we often start out with 6 or so people, and the after a few quests we will be down to half. Whenever someone dies we press f to pay our respects. I am not sure if this is serious or a joke.
A lot of the deaths I have seen have been to traps. Usually I will say something like "trap around that door, be careful", and then someone will run into that trap and die.

As for me, first toon, Level 2, Rogue/Ranger in Korthos Wilderness area. Slipped off cliff but survived with -1 HP...and nothing to revive with so helplessly watched as stabilization rolls failed one after the other until *ding*. (Oy, "It's just to die from something as petty as 'slipping on tea'...".) I didn't bother to run the "Ol' Sully's Grog" quest, 'cuz, you know, rez cakes won't bring you back from death. However, the incapacitated pop-up also has a link to buy a rez cake with shards, so...if a rez cake can bring one back from incap, I'll not be making that mistake again!
You still alive Grim? You should put up a blog post (as should I).

First death? Up until then, my cleric was all about helping the party and other. Healer intim-tank gladly taking hits and spells to keep others alive.
Then, at level 6, I decided to go get a VoM and run Delaras. The goal was to just get through the quests, even if I needed to run on casual. I put up an LFM and asked the guild, but then figured I could solo it. First quest is level 5, so no problem for a Cleric-5/Fighter-1. I could heal, buff, and utterly destroy undead. So, Elite it was. I made it to the first shrine and rested to recover my Turns. Another member joined and made it to the shrine as well. I buffed them up and made sure to heal them as they jumped passed the Cold trap just beyond the shrine. They made it! With my tower shield and plate armor, I used my Anger's Step to cast Expeditious Retreat, and ran through. Somehow - two jets of cold hit me three times.
I wasn't killed by the trap. Greed and vanity did this toon in.

First death? Up until then, my cleric was all about helping the party and other. Healer intim-tank gladly taking hits and spells to keep others alive.
Then, at level 6, I decided to go get a VoM and run Delara's. The goal was to just get through the quests, even if I needed to run on casual. I put up an LFM and asked the guild, but then figured I could solo it. First quest is level 5, so no problem for a Cleric-5/Fighter-1. I could heal, buff, and utterly destroy undead. Level 11 holding 13, was running Necro 2 on a pure monk with nothing in the str stat. Taint of Shadow "You have been touched by a shadow, and will die and spawn another shadow, if your Strength is reduced to 0." I had to keep swapping my deathblock item with my underwater action item. One such time I did not swap back in time and got hit by a shadow and immediately a ray of enfeeblement. Ding! Too weak to continue I went to the land of lost souls without taking any damage, just instant death. Had every quest 1-6 done on elite (including chrono) and almost hit the first milestone reward but it all came to a quick end. Moral of the story, don't ever unequip deathblock.
Was killed by traps protecting levers to open the door to the end fight in Sacred Helm.
Was on a lvl 5 teifling warlock, soloing it on elite.

1st - Level 4.3 - Deep Gnome 2 Rogue/2 Wizard (Eldritch Knight) - died from multiple Kobold Shaman Lightning strikes in a Reaper Butchers Path.
2nd - Level 2 - Gnome Rogue - died from frost jets in Stopping the Sahuagin. I was standing too close as I was searching for the trap boxes, doh.
3rd - Level 3 (So far) - Deep Gnome 2 Rogue/1 Wizard.
The best part about this is all you have to do is put up an LFM and it will fill ASAP.

So I walk into "Come out and Slay" late..
I'm at the entrance by myself, and all the mobs (that you run by at the beginning) have been activated.
I panic, and moved deeper into the building drawing even more mobs...
Completely surrounded, can't move... I'm fighting desperately... heart pounding (seriously)... I start spamming Blood Tribute...
I hit Blood Tribute 11 times, at -1 CON each time before the rest of the group showed up and rescued me... (I started with 14 CON, so I was very close to death).
Could not believe I survived that... So stupid.
Put some stuff in the shared bank before I logged off and went to bed.
Next day, first quest, walked right into a Poison trap in Redfang and instantly died...
Wish I had put more stuff in the shared bank (I'm really missing a sweet +4 Spot/+4 Search goggles I had found in a random chest)

First death = Stopping the Sahuagin level 2, I was stupid and tried to time the run in the middle of the frost jets. Second life I did it from the side without getting hit.
Second death = Dirk's level 3, Reaper slapped me down
Third death = poor build, I don't remember where but I tried to make a pure offense build (It was late and I was tired) in the hopes of killing everything from a distance before it could kill me. Don't do this.

Hopefully they remembered to claim their reward before dying. ;)
You should put up a blog post (as should I).
;)
This is a great little tip. Rez cakes work when you are incap? Who knew!
Another one bites the dust. I had high(ish) hopes for this one. Lvl 5 (4/1 Wiz/Rog) incapacitated in WW part 2, Death aura still going but doing nothing when incapacitated apparently :( Then the final Lightning bolt from a Shamen finished me off.
This doesn't seem right. I think the aura should still work when incap, but then again there's been some... oddities when standing back up, buffs lost ect. There's some weird stuff going on here. Sorry!
edit: https://ddowiki.com/page/Unconscious But this isn't what happened to you, so even more mystery. So the wiki states: Palemasters in undead shroud forms instantly die at 0 hp, regardless of range of unconsciousness.
I'm not dead yet (knock on wood) but I came really close when the whole group, including me, jumped off a cliff and I plummeted like a stone. Two members of the group cast feather fall but for some reason neither spell took hold on me. Needless to say, I took the ladders/stairs for the next few levels until I got my own FF item :P
P.S. I am LOVING the hardcore server. Brings me back to the early days of DDO :)
At low levels, the mass FF spell scales off of the casters level. So you get yourself FF, and 2 others? or so. I'd have to look it up. Yes, I've died this way before too. You see the circle of the spell, you see the feathers all around, you leap... https://ddowiki.com/page/Feather_Fall Says 1 per caster level. Heh, doesnt even mention self.
Level 3 - In Dirk's Secret - Kobold shaman somehow damaged me 3 times with one lightning bolt. over 75 points of damage left me incapped and no one in the party could do anything other than watch me die.
Currently level 4, and still alive.
Heal and repair kits. I *think* you need one point in the respective heal/repair skills to use, I don't remember it's been so long. Target your incap party member and click on the heal icon you didn't remember to drag off your character sheet skill tab. :) The cure light wounds cloak clicky is great in a pinch for saving someone as well. https://ddowiki.com/page/Heal_(skill)
So you need to roll a 20, and you lose a kit each time you try.
I gave up and cheesed it. Did it two levels overlevel, got a wizard hire from the market. Told him to use the runes which he did (taking a hit for half hp on the first one). He got the second rune, but then couldn't get the third because he tries to run directly to it, and it's unreachable that way. So I told him to pull the lever, then while he was running I told him to use the rune. So of course he ran over, pulled the lever, and then ignored the rune. But then I realized that was that. Have to say the only way I've been taken out is by champs. Champs make it too difficult to judge a quests difficulty. And have to say, hardcore is just highlighting how difficult it is for new players -especially with champs, they should be an optional level of difficulty.

Yes, not having 20, 30, or more past lives and a bunch of low level twink gear is a game changer even for the most veteran players. Especially when death is permanent.
It's easy to say a skilled first lifer with minimal gear can contribute just fine in low-mid reaper quests when all the other players are running characters with gear and past lives and a couple of deaths is no big deal. But when everyone in the party is a first lifer with random loot gen gear and there are no raise deads/res shriines/cakes - well it's a whole different story and maybe will help vets sympathize a little more with new players back on the regular servers.

Did the word Elite change it's definition? There are no champs on normal, what makes it elite if you remove anything and everything that is elite? Why not just award the favor and experience when getting the quest to avoid any challenge at all?

You can do these at different levels, when you finish the first one, finish out and go back later. You don't have to do them all in a row. The same holds true with water works, tangleroot, sorrowdusk etc.

To be fair, veteran players didn't have to deal with champs when they first joined the game. New players should have the option of not having to deal with them as well unless they want to. As I said, it should be an optional level of difficulty, possibly one that can be selected when entering a dungeon by the leader.

It 100% is an "optional level of difficulty" that "can be selected when entering a dungeon by the leader". It's called Elite, if you don't want champs, select the champ free option.
Elite:
the best of a class
a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group
the choice or best of anything considered collectively, as of a group or class of persons.
The best or most skilled members of a group
those people or organizations that are considered the best or most powerful compared to others of a similar type

He is right too, elite did not include champs a few years ago (2014), so many veterans obtained multiple past lives and twink gear before ever having to face them.
His original point is also well taken, due to the random nature of champions spawning it is hard to gauge how difficult a quest will be, especially on elite. You get 1-4 champs, maybe not even the tough ones, and it's difficulty is miles different than if 25 of them spawn, especially mini bosses that become champs.
If there are no champs, you know exactly how hard the quest will be, since it will be exactly the same as the last time you ran it.
I'm fine with things as they are, but I can't disagree with his observation.

I actually leapt off a cliff to escape a pack of dire wolves and hobgoblins in the Tangleroot quest where you have to find the battle orders, etc. The last one is on that overlook (past the traps). I got surrounded by several hobgloblins and apparently some dire wolves had spotted me as I made my way there, because while I was trying cleave my way out about 3 of them joined in with the hobbies and I got knocked down. I am watching my health go down while I lie helpless as fangs tear my limbs and swords buffet my face, I manage to stand back up twice but couldn't even get a swing in before getting knocked down again. I starting spamming the "jump" key while aiming for the cliff, despite dangerously low health and no feather fall. Finally managed to jump out of the ring of death, land at the bottom with like 2 health left, and proceed to quaff csw pots like it was sweet tea in the south. Good times! :D

Rogue Mechanic using my new great crossbow in the 3rd Depths chain quest with a player monk and two cleric hires. We had planned for this quest specifically - making sure we could kill the wraiths. Right before the wraiths, however, I had to do the optional and open the secret doors - as rogues are want to do. Up pops the scorpion and I shoot. My bolt hit's it squarely on the mark and does a lot of damage. That's when I realized it was a champ and I had just grabbed massive aggro! Panic immediately set in! I did my best to back-pedal and shoot, but I saw the writing on the wall. Despite now being prepared for the inevitable, that scorpion killed me even quicker than I had imagined it would.

A level 10 hard quest has a fricken DoT that does around 520 damage PER TICK?

Asking to remove champs basically just amounts to, "please make hardcore mode less difficult". I don't agree too much with this sentiment. If you want to get 1750 favor and reach level 20 with no difficulty, then just do every quest in the game on casual or normal. No one is stopping you from doing this.

You have an old enough join date to know that we vets that didn't have to deal with champs
Also didn't have any dungeon scaling for solo play.
Every Quest and every slayer area was scaled to a party of 4 regardless of how many party members were there.
The game was far harder when the level cap was 10 then it is today.
The game has 2 levels of difficulty that have no champs present.
IMO Even with chaps present the game is easier then it was in 2006.

Probably one of the more unusual deaths I have seen was in Korthos during the quest redemption. In it your party is sent to find Larys Heyton, and he is found in a room with a blue magical forcefield covering a body of water. What is supposed to happen is that the Sahuagin bring this barrier down, attack for a while, and then after your party defeats them the barrier goes back up.
Well someone decided to jump in and cross the water while the barrier was down. It must have been bad timing because before he got to the other side the barrier came back up. The poor fellow then started drowning. I guess his swim skill was really bad because he died before he could recall.
It was definitely not a way I ever thought someone could die in hardcore.

Ran in to the boss fight room and was immediately held, I ended up getting incapped. I manged to stand back up and I sprinted out the door spamming my Temp HP. At the point I started to recall I was "living" on only temp hp. When I made it out of the dungeon i was standing in house D right in front of the tavern. I can not stress enough how strained and panicked I was. Instead of entering the tavern immediately and seeking aid from the binder I sat there shaking and continuing to hit my temp HP button, frozen with fear and regret lol.
You would not believe how quickly 24 CON disappears when your as frightened as I was. I don't know if it was the rage ending or negative stacking CON debuff I was applying to myself trying to stay alive but I died at the doorstep of the tavern to CON damage.
It was incredibly embarrassing, was around 11k reaper xp and having a grand old time. 4 characters and only the one death, that I caused myself :/

died on a lvl 4 cleric in Durks, saw my health was low and hit heal...nothing, oh concentration must not be good enough, run, heal....ooops, no spell points....ding.
So used to never running out on them i forgot :)
Was running a challenge on my WF arti. when a red named water elemental hit me hard, went to -9. forgot that WF didn't bleed out. so i was wondering why i wasn't in the death zone when i popped back up alive!!! only to be hit again to -7.
When i popped back up hit a heal spell and ran like hell, spamming heals until i was fully healed, then recalled.
That was so close.

Yeah my L3 gold seal permahire is hanging out with my first hardcore toon in the land of lost souls too. I also used my Heroic Tome of Greater Experience on that toon. I should have just NOT used it at all, and saved it for transfer back to my main server to use on one of my alts that already has several stat tomes and a past life or two. Oh well.

1. WF Artificer (probably L4) succumbed to the scorpions in Haverdasher elite. Never had any problem with the quest before so it took me by surprise.
2. L5 Rgr/Rog died to a champion rust monster in Redfang. Never had any problems with that quest before either other than a champion troll once. Lost a really nice bow one of my other characters had found. :(
3. L3 Rgr/Rog reroll lag death in Redemption elite. Couldn't move, attack, or heal--just had to watch my HP drain away to an iron defender. Hireling healer which could normally take out the defender on her own also died. Perhaps she chased it into the blade trap I hadn't disarmed yet. Don't really know as I wasn't getting any messages.
4. L6 Artificer killed by spikes near the end of Shaagh's. Never had that happen before and didn't realize they did over 100 damage.
5. L8 Wizard killed by champion kobold shaman in Freshen the Air. Not sure why my healer wasn't healing me.

Hopeslayer died last night.
I wasn't killed by a trap. A reaper didn't get me, it wasn't a champ or lag. It was being in a quest alone because the community in general is too scared to run reaper. The boss in VoN 1 danced me. It was almost dead, I had solo destroyed the rest of the quest, but danced for 9 seconds with a troll boss on R2 was the end of the line.
It makes me really sad because the game is not hard and with just 1 other player in the group, it would have been a sure victory. But no matter how good you are, when you are soloing, rolling a 1 can be the end.

Lvl 8 wizard doing chamber of insanity on r1. Coastedl until the end fight then got proton torpedoed by the boss. I was well over 200 hp to start although not at max hp. Base 197 in reaper plus false ife, aid, and mass aid. One hit took me to 55. I saw the writing on the wall. Hireling hesitant to heal then purple haze. Don't even know what hit me. It might have been 5 seconds from when i started the fight.
Carelessness will cost you everthing. I usually have my cleric and my skelly blocking the door but the spectre homie dont play that. I usually have aoes laid down and i didn't. I usually equip a false life wand to whip if needed and i didnt. Just a brain fart not following my own protocol. Went in guns blazing then realized it was a mistake and retreated in panic.
If i would have laid a firewall at the door and stayed there i probly would have made it.
Ate a visor and some decent lootgen. Luckily had already dropped mithral plate from 3bc and 2 skill tomes in the bank.
A crushing defeat and entirely my fault. The first time i wasn't careful i was toast. A bigly tactical error. Cannot summon block a spectre. My next man up is only lvl 3. Can we start with some visors devs? I'd rather marry my ex wife than run tangleroot without a visor guarantee.

****ed as hell. Level 14, 2100 favor, died to some BS scaling. I knew Black and Blue was a newer quest so I ran it on hard at 14instwad of elite like every other quest I had completed up to that level. Black dragon hits me with a DoT that does 350 damage a tick, after going through 22% dr from mrr, 10% more dr from barbarian, and 32 acid resist after that. A level 10 hard quest has a fricken DoT that does around 520 damage PER TICK?
I was with you in that Matt, and it almost totaled me as well. Unfortunately i used all my LOH keeping myself alive from the dots I got even though the boss was facing you and not me.
Once the dragon was dead I just got to sadly sit there and watch you die as there was nothing I could do to help.

Just died, level 9 wiz. Was soloing Delera's pt2 on elite. The quest was going fine; none of the mobs were any threat. Went for the shrine behind Omaren Sniper and the jet of acid came out, knocked me down to 60% so I jumped back, put death aura on and cast protection from energy: acid (already had resist). Assuming there was just the one jet, I jumped over and started to loot the chest, and the second jet got me. Very foolish...

I probably *should* have had a death last night.
I started to play my main, a pure Arty, but got that dread feeling that said today just wasn't a good day to take risks. So rolled up a baby Monk just to putter around.
In Korthos, Heyton's Rest. Had eaten an XP token, so was level 2. Gear sucked, so taking down the Sahuag priests had been slow going. Popped the sealed room open and ran for the sarcophagus. Destroyed that, got the Finish, and started running for the front door with all the mobs on my tail. Out of pots, and caster kept raying me in the back. Finally my last HP fell, and I crumpled on the floor incapped. Then game crashed to desktop. Thought for sure I'd log back in having a talk with Mortality, especially after I got the "You're logged in elsewhere, blah, blah" while trying to log back in.
Once back in I found myself laying on the doorstep to the quest, still incapped, but alive. :) (I did go ahead and delete the character a short time later after selling/deconning what I could, then jumping off a bridge enough times to die. I'm just not a Monk player. Plus, I wanted screenies of Morti.)
Moral of the story = when that little voice in the back of your mind is telling you it's not a good day to go adventuring, pay attention to it. ;)

Well my last two were from bleeding out while the party watched. Not an aid or rage clicky a cure light wand or even bears endurance among them. Rest of the quest was going to be rather difficult for them beings how I was the cleric :).

That little voice I mentioned a couple posts up? Yeah.
Tried testing my luck, but down-graded my running to Hard instead of Elite. Died chasing the Snitch, in the room that blocks off the doorway and turns on the electricity. My *2* cleric hirelings were blocked off outside the door, and before I could either summon them to me or hit my Teleport escape button, I was chatting with Morti. Apparently I had failed to notice my Resists & Protections had timed off. :(
Slow & Steady *was* the plan.

Arti6 banking 7 - Bookbinder Rescue.
Opening the door to the last room, inside were 2 champs. Cleric hireling got one-shotted and I took a Burning Blood to the face that was dotting over my resists. Concentration was too low to successfully cast "protection" from both fire and acid. Left my iron defender to heroically die distracting the champs whilst I hopped around trying to keep chugging enough pots... didn't make it.
If I had just started chugging Pots instead of trying for that Protection from Acid... I might have made it. Ah well, you live and learn... or not.
Champion spawns are intensely exciting, but going hardcore... maybe I should tone down my solo-ing for a bit.

I was in "Another Man's Treasure" Elite Solo. Ran into 2 Champion Warforged Casters. One was a Stone guard champ and I was barely damaging him. I don't remember what the other one was but he was hitting me for over 100 damage per hit. I couldn't heal through it. I should have teleported out..but I thought I could manage.
That duo of champions executed a perfect Tank/DPS combination on me.

The Age of Rage (level 14) has a very crazy double trap. It is a bear trap that is right on top of a blade trap. If you walk over the area with the bear trap, it will grab you so that you can't move. The blade trap next to it will then hit you repeatedly while you are stuck. If you walk into this bear trap before the trapper disarms the traps you are literally dead, no matter how much hp you have. It will just keep hitting you and there is nothing you can do about it.
I saw a level 16 die to this trap yesterday.
The crucible (level 14) 's water test is also a player killer. I almost died on this one. If you go into the water and have a very bad swim skill you cannot beat the current. You also cant cast or use items in the water and it seems that recalling doesn't work either. The water then drags you into a fan where you are literally helpless as you watch it slash away at your hp. I was only able to escape this one with Alt + f4. 100% would have died on this one. I wouldn't recommend running it.

There are quests to avoid and quests that can use teamwork. I agree to avoid the crucible as a solo - for many reasons - but if you have a group, there is a valve in the main water way, under water, that players can turn to shut off the current. I rarely see groups use it and many do not even know the valve is there.
I notice in many quests - players still going way too fast, not using available tools, and often doing parts of quests that are not necessary and very dangerous.

One of the problems I have found is that you have to be at the top of your game ALL the time.
I lagged while jumping over a trap (that can't be disabled or bypassed) on my TRed cleric in The Sunken Sewer just long enough to kill me. 24 levels and all my reaper XP flushed.
Demotivating.
I am trying again but I find much less excitement in logging in.

Mostly all newbie mistakes:
1st - Level 6 - Trap STK
2nd - Level 7 - Catacombs - Did not know how to exit, following party - they all exit on the alter. Playing shortie gnome - clicking on the altar.. Nothing. Nothing. Wraith catches up, getting squished. Run, heal, try again frantically. No exist icon. Franitic. Run, Heal, try again. Stat damage, more frantic. ALT-F4 someone chats. On Mac, no alt-F4, and I refuse to force quit to safety. Done. I go run with my main over level.. Duh, exit is on top.
3rd - Level 11 - TOEE - I was too confident on this map - party is buffing first entry into the halls. Bear runs ahead, I follow. Rest of the part still buffing. Take the first fight, bear engages mob, I snipe from distance, not paying attention to the mob that was also to the left. Sundered, done.
4th - Level 4 - Chest trap in Tome. Someone says "can someone get the chest trap". I run towards the chest and hit search, not knowing the box is to the side, never even did the search..
5th - Level 1 - heytons.. never mind *holds head in shame*
6th - Level 7 - Wolves in Irestone Inlet- triple trip trip trip
7th - level 11 - Delera's chain (last?) Sonic trap passed, forgot about poison trap right behind.
8th - Level 7 - Proof is in the Poison (End Boss or champ) took agro too early again - pummeled with acid arrows, multiple stacking, cannot heal fast enough.
9th - Level 10 - Another Man's treasure - No one ran the swim - never had tried the swim. Impaled underwater.
HC has been great even as a relative newbie. The power levels are balanced, the long term player's still have huge advantage with the meta knowledge of most every trap, they know where to stop, where to jump. Depending solely on spot/search skills is tough.
I'd love to seen future rounds with some change/randomization of trap locations - force the long term players to depend on character spot/search skills. It does add even greater levels of tension and apprehension to every quest.

You should know that you did not die because you did not wear your deathblock item. You would die even if you were wearing it, this is a different mechanism and deathblock does not prevent you from dying. The taint of shadow description reads 'If your Strength is reduced to 0 while under this debuff, you will be killed', so having this debuff in combination with your STR reduced to 0 from either ray of enfeeblement or melee attacks of shadows that do str dmg you instantly die. If you are low on str having a high str item on this one might work as a deathblock, you also need lots of restoration scrolls - potions. Cheers!!

Well there are actually a few quests that have randomized traps, like the spawn of whisperdoom (https://ddowiki.com/page/The_Spawn_of_Whisperdoom). And there are still a lot of veterans that are not very familiar with newer content. So those quests can be equally dangerous for both you and them.

Last night an impatient zerging barbarian ran way ahead of the group and ended up blocked on the other side of a barrier. My cleric had no way to heal the barbarian fast enough as I watched his HP get chopped away - about 1/3rd at a time. After the proverbial "last minute," he DC'd, but it was too late. For a change, I really didn't feel bad for not being able to save someone. I also kept thinking about the irony of his impatience. I'm pretty sure any few seconds gained here-and-there were completely lost having to start over again (if that's what he did).

Solo hard streaked to 20 on my first character, 18 wizard/2 rogue. Solo elite streaked 2nd character to get 1750 favor (not even going to try for 5k, too grindy for me, grats to those who get it though, that is not easy). But 2nd character died at L15 last night, didn't have freedom of movement and those ranger mobs in Mad Tea Party spam entangle or whatever that is...just kept failing rolls to escape it until a bunch of mobs beat me to death while I was helpless. That death was just dumb on my part though. I forgot about those mobs because I always have eternal FoM flask on my regular server, so they are not any threat normally. Lost some good gear on that guy too, a ratcatcher and a few pieces of ravenloft stuff.
Died a couple more times on lowbie wizards today trying the new palemaster enhancements. I suck at palemaster apparently. Started a warforged 18 arti/2 rogue plan a few hours ago, up to L5 now, didn't see any way to get improved precise shot unfortunately, need way too much dex for it when you don't have any tomes Would have to dump stat constitution and use some level ups to get it, which I didn't like to think about. Should still be ok though, I'll have some low DC blade barriers to toss around for the higher levels if I make it that far. Think my next build will be some sort of eldritch knight wizard multiclass monstrosity. Or maybe a druid, I haven't played a druid in a long time.

I saw someone unfortunately die in Spies on elite. We had just killed the fire elementals, and he attempted to turn one of the valves with a poison trap on it. He kept getting hit with the trap, which stopped the valve from turning. He survived the first hit, and the second, and the third, and keeps trying to turn that valve. I’m thinking to myself, what are you doing?! Back away! But no, he just kept going. His hit points were dropping, they’d go back up from heals, but he was determined to not stop and kept getting hit, kept getting knocked out of turning that valve. I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. He was an experienced player, had run Spies a gazillion times. Eventually he succumbed to the poison and he never did get that valve turned. I think he was just tired as it was late.
Notes to everyone:
1) You can stand on top of that valve and turn it without the trap hitting you.
2) If a trap hits you once, jump the heck out of there!
3) If you are tired, you are going to make mental mistakes. Go to bed and live to fight another day!

Just missed out of dying in TOEE elite, partly leader decided that the wiz and warlock who were out of mana could wait to shrine until after he spoke to the Fire Guy (even though shrine is literally next door). Fire guy rejected the offering and started the fight. Wasnt going well leader ran off (I think to escape the room but it is barred). He died, looked like the Wiz had died, Warlock was still up not sure what he was doing but I bailed as fast as possible since all mobs now looking for new target. First time using Alt F4 (surprised I remembered it) and hold my breath for the next 15 min hoping it worked. Moral of the story shrine first, also Pugs are dangerous and watch the leader if they are reckless might be time to bail.

Running Irestone Inlet with a full party of Level 8s. For several of the group it the last quest before the take 9.
Get to YaarYar's schooner and between the four characters they only have 5 Powder Kegs. The are sitting on the schooner arguing about whose job it was to collect the powder kegs.
Enter the Rogue carrying two Powder Kegs, swaps them out and our four heroes are still arguing over who has to run back and collect the powder kegs. Rogue tries to explain he swapped them out and wants permission to lite the fuse and move on. The party leader says sure. The four heroes still arguing. Rogue and I high tail it off the boat. Message about being a floating bomb or whatever it says occurs/pops on the screen. Three seconds later and our four heroes find themselves in the land of lost souls and the party leader is laughing so hard we can hear his wife asking if he was okay. Yeah that's right, they still were on Yaaryar's schooner when it blew up.

Sometimes you squish the scorpion, and sometimes the scorpion squishes you.
I dont understand how you were doing depths chain at level 12+. Great crossbow requires T5 rogue mech, and you should also have T4 arti. Using GXBow prior to level 12 is a player error due to poor build choices. Without the 30% ranged alacrity, RXBow is much more damage, and without Endless Fusilade your GXBow user is seriously gimped. Gimped characters die in hardcore.

1st ed: The electricity floor in Snitch... Dance, dance, die. Level 8 holding 9.
2nd ed: arcane skeleton in necromancer's doom. Lvl 2. We will shall never speak of this again. I blame 1st ed trap death anger for trying to zerg. Lesson learned.
3rd ed: still alive and kicking for now but only lvl 3. Slowly, slowly. Creep, hide, recall if bum squeaky moment achieved!
Safe spot is to stand on the valve that must be turned to deactivate the electrical floor.
This is a player knowledge error similar to the tale of the folks that died on the floor of the incinerator room in that same quest. If you have been parked at cap for a while and/or have not run a quest recently, DDO has taken away all penalties for doing a quest on normal first - try it on normal to 'remember' where traps are, what the mechanics of the quest are (like standing on or near value in electric floor in snitch rooftops), etc... before going in on elite or reaper.

There is so much wrong here with this statement I felt like I had to chime in, especially since it's basically just griefing someone who is sharing his tale.
The strength of of your build, especially with regards to it's lethality is only a very small part of the hardcore equation. Build strength is no doubt part of things, but often it can work against you. If you come into a quest relying on the strength of your build it can breed carelessness. If your counting on your bloated hp, extremely high evasion or ect. to save you come what may, the 00.01% of times it can't will be the time your back in korthos. This is just my personally opinion, but first and foremost in HC is knowing your limits, and knowing the strengths and weakness of your build. #2 would be threat identification and threat netrualization, and by this I mean netrualization of the risk imposed. Like sending your hireling out as beholder bait while you snipe from behind cover, risk close to zip. Even if I'm on my 1k hp wlk/pally tank build, no way i'm going near a trap that can hit x6 times, if possible a player trapper or a hire trapper can take care of it. Similarly, I know a famine's cyclone blast will rip through all my stacked PRR/MRR and cut straight to the bone, and it can cause knockdown for 6+ seconds. Lastly, execution is key, a good player with a bad build is more likely to survive in HC than a bad player with a good build. Be smart, always stay on your toes, prepare as much as possible, trust your gut, and don't be afraid to restart or back down. I'll echo this x3 with regards to party roles, if your a tank or a trapper don't be afraid to say "I'm not doing that" if the particular situation at hand makes your spidey sense go off.

So, surprisingly, traps haven't killed me yet... But you may find my deaths amusing nonetheless.
My first life ended when my level 4 wizard wandered into the Searing Heights for some easy xp... And, since I was half asleep, I forgot to summon both my hireling and my skeletal knight, fumbled with my shortcut keys ineffectively when I finally realized I was being attacked, and then was mortified after the 'You Have Died!' tone sounded and I met Mortality for the first time in the afterlife. My frustration at my own carelessness only increased as I silently reviewed all of the mistakes I made, and I resolved not to make them again. I really shouldn't have died out there.
My second life came to a close when I was trying to beat the quest 'Archers Point Defense' or something like that... The one with all of the bugbears and hobgoblins trying to kill the guard captain. The details escape me though, so it could be my imagination, but there are certainly no traps in that quest. He was a level 9 wizard, too.
My third life was snuffed out at wizard level 4 in R1 'Durk's Got a Secret'. I'm not sure if the reaper that rushed me was the cause of death, or a kobold shaman's lightning bolt. The sad thing is that I'd barely survived a lightning bolt earlier in the quest (I was slowly bleeding out when a fellow party member used a heal spell on me)... But I blame the kobold shaman in the end.
I'm going to make a new wizard soon so I can take revenge on the kobolds. It's personal now. -_-
P.S.
I think I'm going to either make sure I get more sleep before I use this new character, or have a pot of coffee on hand every time I go questing with him. Insomnia is not helping matters, clearly.
P.P.S.
Second edit to my comment. Now that I think about it, I think my level 9 character was rendered helpless in the quest by a 'Ray of Exhaustion', then I got mobbed before I could recall. Ironic that a 'Ray of Exhaustion' killed an insomniac wizard, is it not?

Pure monk, XP capped. Holding level at 19 and running level 15 quests for favor.
Red Rain on *hard*, fighting trash in an alleyway until out of nowhere BAM I'm in the land of lost souls. Apparently exploding constructs can do ~ 500 fire damage at this difficulty. So much for monk saves and improved evasion, so much for soloing Crucible.
Back to Korthos without cloak or mascara.

Komoda, level 12
The DPS of Inquisitive is so absurd I decide to go solo into the Shadow Knight on elite. One room, second, everything falls down faster than grass blades under a good lawnmower. Traps? Yeah auto detect them all, then disarm. Easy peasy.
Ding, dead.
This is how I learned about taint of shadow + ray of enfeeblement combo.
Komodaaaargh, level 16
Because I learn nothing, I farm the ghostly cloak from Tempest Spine again. Yeah, solo, you know, Inquisitive DPS and that. Because I learn nothing, I pop in to the Necro 2 again at level 12, this time with a meatshield-shaped friendly barbarian. Wow, this works so much better.
Level 16 I decide to I solo the Blockade Buster. Having never played it before, I do it on hard. Set the timer on the first ship to two minutes, so I have the time hop go on the second one.
I enter the Captain's cabin on the second ship, the door-entering transition ends, but instead ending up in the cabin, I end up in the afterlife.
This is how I learned that in the Blockade Buster getting on one ship is not enough to protect you from the explosion of the other one.
All in all, a learning experience. 5 stars out of 5, would recommend.

Yes, they do. They will one shot Garret the Sainted almost every time, he's died many times in that alleyway with me :) I learned quickly to keep my distance and move away when I see their detonation sequence animation start.
EDIT: I have a reflex save in the 90's and Improved Evasion and it doesn't help at all.

My character died at level 20 in Epic Hard "Another Man's Treasure". We had been farming it for items, and seemed easy.
I got taken down by a griffon in the last room (to negatives), but the other players didn't have healing, only repair spells.
So a few seconds later, the griffon hit me again, and I died.
I think that's it for me for Hardcore.
I got the level 20 cosmetic, which looks good, but the Reaper and 5000 favour goals look too difficult.
I've seen characters die due to lag, or getting stuck on loading screens, so I suspect the odds of getting the other rewards are too low to spend that much time on.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Grimvauld the warforged with the bastard sword, has been begging everyone to help him ransack 'Another Man's Treasure' and 'Kind of a Big Deal' for weeks. It really sucks to hear that there were casualties.
I ran AMT a few times with him too, but quickly got the vibe that it was a pointless risk. I saw those red griffons easily hitting for 250 damage a hit even on hard. They always aggro-ed the person with the fewest hit points first, no matter where they stood in the room and most of the time that was me.
So sorry to hear you story.

Died a few days ago in WW Elite part 3. Solo'd my way to level 5 as a half-orc monk, got to the part with the levers and the drop down and I got a little cocky and got smoked trying to "Charge" the Kobold side.
And, that's probably the extent of my HC journey, lol. It was fun to try and I'm glad I saw it and started playing again. But, I think I may tr someone and get a feel for the game again back on live servers.

So after playing on the HC server for a month now, I have had 3 deaths total.
First death was hubris. After making it to lvl 19 in the first week, there was nobody in my level range to group with. Able to 1 shot aoe with acid well, eldritch tempest and meteor swarm I started trying to get some gear to start on epics. After ransacking lost as sea on elite for the int googles, I decided to try for the int cloak out of wraithcallers instead. Tried hard, smoked it, went for elite, died in the portalable hole from a 3 stack evil dot after hitting my panic button. While, to some degree, I bemoaned the fact that it is BS you can't use negative energy burst in a public area, I swallowed my pride, and admitted it was my fault. Came out of that with a new rule, never try to solo elite or reaper, however easy it might seem.
2nd death was at lvl 22, and this was carelessness. First of all I ran content I was not very familar with, 2nd of all I assumed a EN quest wouldn't be dangerous especially for a tanky build, and 3rd I realized too late that the 15% arcane spell failure on a a heavy shield combined with a teleport scroll was not a good source for a panic button.
3rd death was Pure lag. And this is the great failing of hard core. When a 15 second lag spike can strike at any point, without warning, the entire concept of perma-death fails. Don't try to tell me the lag was on my end, when the whole party lags, it's clear, it is not. Had I not been lagging, I would have had at least 20 ways to prevent my death, actually scratch that, in this particular instance, I never should have taken more than 10% of my HP bar in damage. It isn't that it isn't preventable, just take any quest, imagine a bad pack of reapers and champs and then ask your self, if I afk for 15 seconds, would I survive this? If the answer is yes, then that is the difficulty you should run on HC. Classic example, at one point I was able to run feast or famine on epic hard, with ease, I happened to be running it on EN, to farm for relics, a 20 second lag spike hit, I tried teleporting out, spaming heals, nothing worked. So I disconnected asap, waited 5 minutes and logged back in. My soul stone was sitting on the floor.
So now looking at a 4th attempt, I'd need a build that auto regen's through lag while being fairly durable to start with, Es wlk anyone? Taking into account Hubris and carelessness, I need to run things on hard, when I could be doing R2, purely to avoid murphy's law and lag spikes. So a continued foray into HC requires me to run a build I don't care for on a difficulty setting that's face-roll boring, or to simply let someone else take the risks and carry me. This, is distinctly, unfun. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the positive aspects of HC, and there were many. But if HC is going have any degree of permanence, the lag issue needs to be addressed, I for one am done with HC and any future HC events until some answer is in the works for this.

I would assume you got a couple of the cosmetic rewards (L20 and 1750 favor). I don't remember the requirement for the reaper reward, did you achieve that? And just guessing you were still working toward the 5000 favor?
Thankfully I have not had anything worse than a few quick rubber band 1-2 second spikes, or when your swings are 2-3 seconds behind (like 4 swings to smash a barrel, or swing 3-4 times at a mob that go whoosh whoosh whoosh and suddenly you realize they are not actually standing there but are 10 feet away shooting at you with a bow.

I had a similar experience with lag, was at 4.4k favor when a 5 second lag spike hit while I was timing a trap. I stopped mid jump and hovered in the air directly in the trap. Saw the damage roll in and took multiple hits to kill me but could do nothing in response. undead aura? not ticking. Quicken neg burst? nope. Quicken teleport to market? nope. Just watched my character slowly die.
2nd attempt was at 3.9k favor when a 5+ second lag spike hit in a wilderness. This character was capable of solo zerging elite quests in this wilderness area but was dragging along a full group even though I was always way ahead of them in quests and basically soloing. I like putting up lfm with 'piking welcome' to help people out. Well a lag spike hit in the wilderness and I watched my elite capable solo build slowly get chipped away while standing there. Cleave, GCleave, EK Cleave? nope. Neg Burst? nope. Quicken teleport to market? nope. Just watched my character slowly die.
I agree that there are many positive aspects of HC and greatly enjoyed meeting people from other servers. But the rewards for HC and the leader boards are not really any reflection of a players skill but rather their luck of not getting lag or getting lag only when it doesn't matter. If the game did not lag I would have already got 5k favor twice and would have 2 characters on the favor leader board. (Third attempt I made a bad decision so that character deserves their death lol). Now on my fourth attempt because I really want the 5k favor reward but only since I have the time to continue pursuing it. SSG needs to take a serious look at various instances of lag death across all servers when it is reported and find a solution if they are to do Hardcore again with leader boards and extreme commitment rewards. Nothing against those people on the leader boards now but there are some really good players that should be on the board but are not due to lag deaths that would have never had happened in a functioning game server.

I was lvl 30 decked out in the cherry picked BIS non-raid cap level gear for my build, I was short exactly 1 item from being fully geared. I had just started cranking out 10k+ rexp a day and was all set to sprint to the 100k reward. The lag spike hit me at the worst possible moment in the worst possible quest I was planning to run that day. It was a 1 in a million chance that came to fruition. IMO any other form of death is preventable, the lag death only if you follow the guidelines I posted above. In reaper, it's hard to run R1 and be able to survive a 15sec afk vs a bad pack of champs, so in my mind anyone who makes the top tier of the reaper rewards is going to have to have a certain degree of luck, or just be behind the guy who dies during the 1/million. And if we are talking the 1 in a billion chances when a very bad spike can kill you on lower difficulties, that drops the difficulty and builds that are viable even further.
The silver lining of this is that my main has been hamster wheeling heroics and i'll be able to transfer a very usable alt with ED's mostly maxed and all the new shiny loot from the latest content,

This makes me really sad. On my third go around I only spent 4 days in heroics but i'm fairly sure I ran into you right after you acquired your cosmetic worthy greatsword. I always figured you would go out in a glorious blaze of combat surrounded by your fallen enemies, it's of small comfort that in the end only lag could take you down. I've been telling my party members for a week now that only lag can kill me now, and sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

Terag has passed into the great unknown amidst the ruins of Threnal ... a Reaper of great strength appeared through walls after acquiring a jewelled key and death was the calling card.
No lag. No stutter. Not a one shot.
Just looking another way and getting hit, moved backed to party, got a heal, but just not quite enough fast enough to defeat the Reaper.
Sad ... but time for a second effort!

You guys are complaining about how lag makes the HC tournament unplayable, and yet you both reached most of the rewards available? This sounds like a contradiction. You both even made it close to 5k, which is one of the mega rewards that is supposed to be practically unattainable. Lag sucks and I won't say its ok, but infrastructure can't be perfect and it seems like everything is around where it should be for a first try. Remember this is the first HC tournament EVER.
Maybe SS can look into a higher speed server for the next one (if there is a next one).

I came for the experience, not some cosmetic. As it so happens a red scarf goes perfectly with my red dragonscale robe, but this is the icing on the cake.
Of course i'm going to complain. When you enter a quest and your central concern isn't the reaps, it's not the traps, it's not how your going to handle the red name fight, it's not a full pack of the worst champs possible, it's lag. Clearly, something is wrong, and it is very immersion breaking.
It doesn't sound like you've been killed by lag yet, or if you did, you didn't have 2+ weeks invested into that character. In my mind, it's not much different that having a randomized lightning bolt come down from the sky and send someone straight to morty once per day. If you want to continue playing under those conditions that's your choice, but I will not.

I have three big issues with your statement
1. Lag sucks but infrastructure can't be perfect: I agree that I can not assume there wont be any lag, a second or two here and there is acceptable to me. I built my character with 700+ hp and 70+ prr and mrr at lvl 18 and have Death Aura always healing me for 150+ hp every 3 seconds, I can handle a little lag and never drop below 90% hp even when soloing elite quests. I also have Arcane Barrier just in case as a 50% hp warning but have literally never seen it past lvl12 when I get all my gear farmed out and enhancements set up perfect. I leave Arcane Barrier in my enhancements as a 'just in case' measure that would be dropped in a heartbeat on main servers since it never procs on me. A little lag is understandable and my build more then compensates for that and can handle such instances even when surrounded my champs in elite dungeons (I still get a mini heart attack but never drop anywhere near 50%). It is a massive lag storm in the 5+ second range that I do not accept. When I solo zerg elites and barely take a scratch (as a melee character) I should not die to some random agro in a wilderness area because I could literally do nothing.
2. First Hardcore Tournament ever: You said it yourself, this is a Tournament. That means competition to see who is the best players in build, skill, and knowledge to not die in reaper or while doing literally every single quest in the game. With the way I have seen lag hit myself and other high favor players, the tournament is not entirely skill but lots of luck that the lag storm hitting when it doesn't matter or never hitting them at all. I personally don't care if my name goes down in history as one of the best on hardcore. I am here only for rewards but there are some who are competitive that have had the same thing happen to them. While not interested in this reason to play hardcore, I will make the argument for others that it needs to be fixed especially for the competition to have any meaning by the end of all of it.
3. Reached most of the rewards available: How can you assume I have most of the rewards? There are 5 total rewards and I only have gotten 1. I got the 1750 favor reward and that is it. I don't play reaper because that is an extra layer of risk I do not want to deal with (reaper also lowers my damage and slows down my zerg). I have never got to lvl 20 because if I take level 20 I get locked out of heroics to farm favor in the 16-19 range. Both of my high favor lag deaths I was holding lvl 20 for two days while farming favor. Could I make a toon that ignores favor and goes straight for 20? yes I could but any time spent on that character could have been spent grinding out favor for 5k. So just because I have died at high favor twice does not mean I have most of the rewards, all it means is I got 1/5 rewards for all the effort I put in that was ended due to two separate instances of an insane lag storm.
A slight side note, I had a character also die at 3.2k favor but was not due to lag. I had very poor positioning when a group surrounded me for no escape and a champ Shadar-Kai chain whipped me to death. While I am sad another 5k favor attempt character of mine had died, I have no issue with the death happening because it was entirely my own fault. I do not bring it up in my argument because it was just a plain bad mistake death. That is what Hardcore is supposed to be, mistakes have consequences. I am only upset with the deaths entirely outside my control.

My plan was to start with low-hanging fruit. I created a spreadsheet to calculate how much favor at each level I would need and not having to run anything after level 10 on more than hard. I was cruising along on my FvS and sitting at cap xp (but didn't take 20) so we could run 15-19s as needed. I just needed two more quests on hard for 1750 favor. I had a great idea, "Hey, Mask of Deception is quick. Let's hit that one on hard."
We went in, got the mask, went to the end fight. I ran outside first to gather the aggro and we focused on trash first. When most everything was dead, there was still a sorcerer alive. My buddy said, "Sorcerer down!" so I immediately went around the corner of the building to face the boss and got hit with dragon-breath for 435+. Apparently, there were TWO sorcerers left. I had 570 hp so I must have been not fully healed. Off I went to the Land of Lost Souls.
And yes, an enemy on hard hits for 450+ which I thought was inconceivable. Beware!

Durks, level 2 dungeon. On Reaper 1. Level 3 Warlock.
1st reaper I ever saw.
Niac's cold ray. 117 damage after 35 were stopped by energy resistance.
There's nothing that you can do to survive that, no possible awesome play that would make a **** difference. Here is a single pot of damage that is greater than your total hit points+temporary hit points
All the stuff I bought for that character now permanently gone. Supreme tomes, Skill Tomes, Exp Pots, treasure pots. Goodbye Hardcore.
Yeah, sure I can move the character over to a real server in november, where it can rot with 1 epic past life as it's so far behind my "real" characters heroic/epic completionist that it's not worth playing, as the 1000's of hours to catch up can be better spent doing many other things (mostly the racial lives on my main).

Actually, you can wait until level 5 to run that quest on reaper at no penalty when it is much safer. Just saying.
Even if you run it on normal at level 3 and then wait a day to run it again at level 5 the difference in rxp is almost insignificant.
I think you can jump/dodge the cold ray (if you see if coming). The sonic one is the one I fear.
Try being level 19, running Fear Factory (15) on R1 and failing a save against disintegrate. Rolled a 1. That was my last death.
Fortitude is my best class save (warlock); I had a +5 resistance item, +1 luck, +3 Parry item, +2 from heroism, ship buffs (if they even add save bonus)... didn't help.
I have run that quest dozens of times at level on R1 or higher never got disintegrated or even saw anyone else die in that quest... like ever.
At least dying early doesn't take much investment. But then I didn't buy anything except some xp pots and a few hirelings so maybe I can't relate.

I think he said he already had an epic past life, so he made to 30 and ER'd. I would be annoyed at the time investment, but why on earth anyone would invest so many DDO Points in a character on the HC server is beyond me. When a bad or mailicious PUG or even some dumb lag can kill you, it just doesn't seem wise to me. Especially if you know you won't use it when the event is over anyway.

I know the frustration you feel. I think most players only have so many attempts of HC in them before they need a break. When my current character dies I will also be heading back to the regular servers.
What I was mostly concerned with, was not trashing what is honestly a good effort from SS to spice up DDO. I think they have done an objectively good job and getting a project like this approved must have been a lot of work. The community is almost certainly better off for it, and at least for me its the most fun (and stress) I've had in a long time on this game.
But yes... Luck is a major factor.
Every character that reaches level 20 or 5k favor has had at least a few moments where they thought for sure they were going to die. RNG either sparred them then, or sent them to the afterlife. It could have been lagging in a blade trap (me), being held/stunned in a boss fight, getting killed by a mechanic you never noticed before (shadow and strength to 0), or getting stuck in the underwater fan of the crucible (me).
One thing I'm sure you've noticed, is that by the time you reach epics most players are on their 4th or 5th character.
If you are playing long enough to reach level 20 or 5k favor then for sure RNG is going to have many defining moments in your character's life. I wouldn't go so far as to say that skill plays no role, or that luck plays a greater role than skill. But for sure everyone who has passed into the epics was at least skillful, **** lucky, and very persistent.

Yeah I noticed on live servers right away, I used to breeze through R1 in heroics solo on my main. Right after the patch I could only do that on about half the quests, and some I had to tone back to elite.

Finally got me. After working on another char for a week I decided to get back to my 4389 favor/76k reaper char to hit 5k. First quest back, Good Intentions R1, and I am doing fine. Kill the boss and decide to clear the arcanes to loot. Rolled a one on disintegrate. This is a tank build so I didn't think anything could one shot me but it did. Pet Skelly killed it a half second later. For it to one shot me I assume it was a champ.
Still got a 30 and a 16. Important item lost is minimal. Mainly just starting over on 5k favor and reaper rewards.

I did an epic reincarnation and then a heroic reincarnation. Bought both hearts from the store used them one after the other.
Was level 1, did korthos on elite, and a few harbour quests and levelled up to 3 as soon as I could.

There may be a few interested in how Xeang died since he was fairly high on the Rxp Board at the time (265K).
I was in Mad Tea Party with a very good player and friend from Thelanis (my home also) when a large Mob with several champs, etc. went after my friend. My aasimar heal missed him by a split second (he was at -9 hp briefly). The rest of the mob turned on me -- I retreated trying to throw a heal at myself, but was still at 1/2 my Hit points. For the first time ever I tried my Sharn Escape. -- but I didn't transport though still alive when I hit it. Perhaps I was tripped or held at time, but 1 second later I was finished off.
It was a glorious battle and fair. I had survived similar encounters countless times (on my third tr).
While of course a bit depressed -- I was about 2/3 of the way to that 400 k goal -- I had a lot of fun doing it. A lot of fun. It was a great challenge and I don't regret a minute of it. I made a lot of new friends along the way from other servers too and will look forward to the next HC. Thanks to all who helped me get that far and to the Devs for the challenge. You still may see me on my favor toon Xeung now going for that 5K goal before the season ends.
Take a toast to the fallen and continue your journey. Cheers!

atrywhyme level 16 with 49k reaper xp just raised to 16 headed to gianthold to finish flagging quests.
experienced some lag not enough to make me want to recall out. finished with the 2nd of 3 crystals. on my way to the giant to free him from the evil skelli that is controlling him i meet a famine reaper and his friends. its ok i still have 4 endless fusilades left and a shrine around corner. i targetted the famine and started the fusilade i was shoting while floating in the air. 3 secs still shotting in air, 10 secs still in air hearts pumping yelling no no no still just floating and then screen turns to land of lost souls looking in combat log see killed by cyclonic blast for 400 + damage i had rolled a 1 (+26) failed saving roll
but good old rust bucket my arti pet had killed that nasty famine before i had died to the cyclonic blast so either there was 2 reapers or lag does funny things.
now moving on to my back up toon playing with the little misses my toon known as YoureKilling Me Smalls with my wifes toon named Smallone
man lag brings a whole new level of difficulty to the challenge.

I don't remember the details of how I got to this situation but Grotkin the elder beholder had a sliver of HP left. I retreated to heal up because he messed me up. Troll and drow are dead. I heal up and as soon as I round the corner I blast Grotkin in the face. Grotkin also blasted me in the face (fail vs disintegrate). We kill each other. I was pretty stunned but it was a good death. It's much better than dying to lightning in the lighthouse quest that isn't in the lighthouse anymore.

My latest: Gizmit. Level 8, holding into 9.
Gnomey mostly-rogue trying Inqui. Champ Syndicate Magus in last quest of Sharn Syndicate chain. He had a crazy mean Displacement going on. I checked the log afterwards and never landed a single bolt on him, highest roll against it was was 42. So even ducking/dodging and using cover, he managed to double Enervate me for the kill.
Unless his champiness gave his Enervate extra level-stealing ability, he rolled '4' on both of them.
This death stung, dying in something I've run countless times without issue.

Wasn't my death but my buddy's. Our goal was level 20, 1750 favor. We were running Records of the Past and got to the relay crystal, I activated the crystal and he started to rotate the mirror. He thought he was in a safe spot, but DING. Sucked because it was a stupid mistake, worsened by the fact that we were holding 20th level and had less than 30 favor to goal.

I've died three times once at level 8, once at level 7, and once at level 5. My level 7 character died when I found a trap on elite and going to step back to line up on the box to disarm it but accidentally hit forward and... I was dead. Sigh. My level 5 death was due to "I think I can do this one on elite." Nope. My level 8 was the worst. I was in the process of killing off the last boss and suddenly my toon stopped fighting and responding to the keyboard... and I was dead. That one hurt. Starting over, currently now level 5 trying to hit 10 before the shutdown. REALLY impressed by all those who hit level 20+, AMAZED at those with the thousands of reaper points. Reaper scares me completely on this server.

My final death of the league: my own arrogance. Doing the last part of Shan-to-Kor while holding 7 as a Favored Soul. Stood too close to the fire trap on the ladder while the Rogue hire was disabling it. Those extra 70 HP from FvS 7 really would have come in handy there...

The last death that ended my 5k Favor run at L17 (Holding 19 - cos Monster Manual XP lets you over the normal cap), Rogue 2 Artie 15... lagged whilst jumping around fighting a wizard…. apparently took a disintegrate to the face. That was on the Assualt on Stormreach chain…. the captain of one of the ships. Blown to bits is notorious with us…. because of Lag Spikes... so I should have known better.
Up until then it was plain sailing….
I pretty much only played Trappers on the HC Server. The learning curve was pretty steep with no twink gear and past lives to fall back on. Lost several in the 5-9 range.
Knowing the quests did not help so much as a maxxed out spot skill (and not casting speed boosts so that I could run into the traps before spotting them).
Didn't bother with reaper… out of time reasons.
SO the Hardcore Server revitalised a long waning interest in DDO... I played more in the last months probably than in the last 2 years combined.
Sadly… going back to the main server feels kind of…. flat.
I expect that we'll be back for the next hardcore.

Quite a number of close calls, but only 2 actual deaths.
1: First incarnation of my main character there, STK solo Reaper 1, 3 champs and 2 reapers behind a secret door and me thinking I could kite them... nope!
2: Loot Farmer alt, heroic elite slave lords part 3, champion acid dot doing more damage than I could mitigate with heals (was a human champ just after the clay golem + rats fight)
After those 2 (both happened fairly early in the event), I survived all the way to the end.

A skeleton archer in the 3rd delera's quest critically hit for 105 damage when my lizard sorcerer had only 90 hitpoints. She had just taken level 6, too, and I was having a lot of fun with fireball and empowered+maximized Scorch SLA. My cleric is yet alive and has had only one teammate die on her, so things are looking good so far.

105 damage? On archers? Playing reaper, I presume? Because yikes, I did that quest on elite and didn't see such damage numbers.
I managed to bite the dust with my wizard yesterday, purely out of stupid decision making on my end. Was doing Heart of the Problem, the second quest of the new gatekeeper chain. Which has that area you drop down into and face elementals and mephits, who seem to be somewhat overtuned for the quest. I *knew* that spot was dodgy, since I died there before on a normal character, so I had initially planned to just avoid it, since it's optional anyway. But the rest of the quest was very easy, no issues at all. And I was level 7, after all. Two levels over the quest. So in my overconfidence I dropped down, ate a lot of damage, realized my hireling was still standing upstairs, staring down the hole... and died in a panic. Even just got knocked out first, then my hireling teleported down to me, drew aggro from the elementals and they fireballed him, killing me permanently.
Oh well. Once more into the breach.

No, we were doing it on Elite, I guess the skeleton just rolled maximum damage. I don't think it was a champion, but I'm not entirely sure about that.
And the same thing happened to me in that quest. The hireling didn't follow, then teleported down and got me killed. Luckily that was on a normal server, but since then I've been avoiding that particular place.

1st - My Monk. Poison trap in The Sunken Sewer. Thought I had it timed. Made it past the first one, and by twitch reflex tried to jump over the 2nd jet. I would have been find If I stopped between them and let the healer heal me between failed saves. I was level 5
2nd. My Rogue. Recovering the Lost Tome. Lightning hallway. Was trying to hit the INT rune to clear. Failed every save. Ran back for heals 3 times. Last one double hit me and failed on both rolls. That one made me the most mad.

That section can be hard, but in case you don't know (because it sounds like you were just eating the hits), the lightning only hits in the middle of the hallway. If you time it right you can easily tumble around the corner where the rune is, where you'll be safe and able to turn it off without too much of an issue.

That's what I always thought. I made it to the rune, and kept getting interrupted while trying to activate it. I thought I was inside the pillar, but I guess not. Never got that first one on the right turned off.

Huh, weird. I usually just roll as far into the safe part as possible, then inch closer to the rune until I can toggle it. Worked fine on two characters just recently.

Not on the Hardcore server, I noticed the other day that there was a Favoured Soul Hireling which can turn off these runes, it was lowest levels, though. Forgot the name.

Killed in Bastion of Power
1 champ tiefling hits me with 1 spell, force missiles which gives me 5 instant stacks of bludgeon over time. Instant death from full health. No time to react.
