Most "new" zones, like anything since MOTU don't have explorer XP. But there are journals scattered around for free XP I think.

Eh?
Assuming you have bought the expansion:
The Cogs has talky things to collect (like other Epic explorer areas), which give you XP.
And you get XP for killing stuff of course.
And there are walk-up quests in the area, though you (obviously) have to complete them to get XP.
I'm not sure what other "free xp" you are talking about.

I was referring to the exp for "finding" the quest entrance. I have been spending a lot of time doing racials so it just feels like most of the areas have exp for finding quests such as 3bc, gianthold, Vale etc

In some explorer areas, just walking by a certain spot gives you xp.
In other explorer areas (like Cogs), you have to find and click on a scroll, or a book, or a glowing symbol to get the xp.
Look for scrolls on the ground in Cogs.

As bracelet said, since the Menace of the Underdark expansion, the explorer zones doesn't give xp for finding locations anymore like quests entrance or lore locations but you get it by clicking journals scattered on the floor through the area.

Ah, older explorer areas gave you XP for finding certain locations or landmarks in the area. These would normally include quest entrances, but also places like "The fallen tree" or "The lookout point" etc.
Newer areas replaced this with the system of finding the various journals/notes/sparkly things that are scattered around instead, which you have to click to get the XP.
Personally, I preferred the older method of finding landmarks as I tended to remember them much easier. I never remember where the journals and things are and have to resort to the wiki!

On the downside though, the old explorer areas will spam you with voiceovers every time you pass through those walk-up POIs...
I have to turn my sound off whenever I'm doing GH quests just because I get soooo sick of hearing Stormreaver growling at me.

I keep expecting the Stormreaver to start grumbling about "don't be hasty, young hobbits"
