View Full Version : Please don't make the new Character screen be permanent (while in Xen'drik)

It makes sense for promoting hype right now. I actually like how the new character screen looks. But I like the old one as well. Please make it work like the Forgotten Realms character screen. Have it show when you are on Khorvaire. Keep the old one for when characters are in Xen'drik.
Another option would be to toggle which screen, but I prefer it working like the Forgotten Realms since it is more conducive to immersion.

Not currently possible. Character select screen background is set by what "Region" category the character is currently located in. There are currently two Region Categories:
Eberron
Not Eberron
Maybe some day we'll make more, but that is not currently planned.

Understood.
I haven't seen the new background yet but add my voice to those who would love it if perhaps these two 'regions' could each have a player selected background appropriate to said region. So that I can choose from all the fab designs.

Come to think of it, Ravenloft is even weirder with its bright and happy looking Forgotten Realms screen. I hope that in the future you do make it a little more complex.

I like the new screen but I'll miss the old one with its pleasant little water feature.
Count me as another that would like a player-chosen character screen. And I was quite vocal about a Ravenloft option in the past. Most players love customizing their gaming experience with such options.

Allowing the player to choose, or basing it off of the last public area you were in when you logged out would be super duper.
But don't mistake that for a dislike of the new screen! I absolutely LOVE the new screen!

Im one step further. Hatin it, don't want it, want the old one back. Too bright and too much blurry artwork on the left hand (toons right) side. I also don't like the little windows poked through some of my toons.

It's been a few days to let the Sharn screen grow on me, and during that time I've come to really appreciate the old one.
Allowing us to select which screen we see on login, regardless of where we logged out, would be a nice bit of fan service. Want to always see the Forgotten Realms one? Select it. Sharn? Okay, select it. Stormreach? You got it. The totally new ones SSG could craft for places like Amrath, Ravenloft, ToEE? Select those if you want, because they would be fantastic.
Yeah, it's a pipe-dream. But it would be awesome.

It wouldn't have to be a pipe dream if they could monetize the work. Maybe the first 3 everyone can choose (Stormreach, Sharn, Eveningstar) but future screens could be sold as an upgrade package to user customization. Additionally that could become part of expansion packs - new character select screens.

I don't miss the old one at all. The 2006 tropical plant & chunky stonework is/was outdated.
I love the new one. (In fact it makes the FR selection screen look dated as well.)
My feedback is, I wish we could have some things added to the character selection box.
Like a better iconic border, Something within the character box border to indicate completionist, Class splits of current life, Platt & AS count, just to name a few.
I think it's a great update to the game.

I echo this as well. Too bright, and it's taking longer for my characters to show up on the screen to select.
I also agree that the old screen was blah and needed an update. Maybe way down the road, the next character selection screen will be a dusk or night scene. (I really love the darkness of the character creation part of the game!)

I would so want this option. In particular, I want an Icy Cavern like look for one; To compliment the Red and Blue my main is wearing... :p

Icy Cavern would be cool, I've always wanted something from the snowy summits of the Stormhorns. There are just some exquisite views from that wilderness zone. I sure wouldn't say no to an underwater screen either.

As a person with light sensitive headaches, I agree an evening theme would be nice. That's yet another reason I don't like the current screen as much. However, the Forgotten Realms screen is also bright. It's too bad Neverwinter is likely never to be an option for DDO. I like the dark themes of Neverwinter Nights (not the MMO, but the first non-MMO game for PC).

lol, I remember that game, played a lot of it too. The lighting for that was basically Gotham in the Animated Series; always muted, dull, dark and largely one shade. Especially the early release without the actual skybox back then.
Although like others, I'd probably suggest having a Ravenloft theme for that (evening hues) and only have the occasional flash of lightning in the background. There's a player on Thelanis that might like that for their backdrop of their caped crusader... :p
Just give me my Icy Cavern though. :)

I wonder why rl has es background. I thought it's a bug. make sense now.
As for the op - I agree - can we have it cycle every patch or maint?

I like seeing something new, if I remember right the 'normal' one's been the same since I started playing back in 2009.
And I generally don't think 'immersion' when I'm on the character selection screen so nothing lost there for me.

Is it just a matter of changing your Boolean flag to an Int, and then changing your flag set/get code accordingly? Call it a bug, and let Lynnabel fix it. :D

I can tell you right now that any solution for any problem in DDO as a whole, regardless of situation, that contains the word "just" as part of it is likely either moderately impossible or completely impossible :P

'97, working for a small telco, SCO, working directly off the root, and I rolled a 1. "Return home early" is no where on that results table.

Similar story here, but instead of a small telco, I was working for the university in the internet server lab as a student.
I found a file I wanted to delete but cannot delete. So, I just did /bin/rm -rf * as root and didn't know I was at the root directory. I was wondering why the delete went by for so long. Not before long, I noticed everything was gone...
Good thing there were backups... After that incident, I got to go to the Dean's office and not allowed root access and not allowed internet access and was only allowed to work on Mac computers as his administrative assistant for 3 months without pay. :(

I actually like the new Sharn loading screen. It reminds me of Spring, which is what it felt like at Boston for the past weekend and today.
You guys and gals do not like the new bright and colorful screen?

I like it too. But I can certainly see reasons why some others may not.
But personally, I like the ideas for optional places for the character screen. Would make each of my characters more flavourful I feel. :)
Although... I do feel for the Airship on the right, it's just flying around in circles, and you can see it too. I wonder what the Captain of the ship did to get forced to just fly around and not get a chance to dock?

All of the airship docks are in use, so Stormreach air traffic control is having it circle until they're able to accommodate it.
Or a drunk dwarf wandered onto an airship and though he'd take it for a spin.

It's stuff like that that makes a story. The Devs should totally make one based on that premise alone. The party needs to commandeer the ship, fix the ship from the damage it's taken and dock the ship as it's falling apart, all before it crash lands and kills everyone on board and where it crashes into. :)
So a very little fighting, and more role play or skills based quest to combat all those endless hoardes of enemies quests that we know the Devs will be unleashing...

You guys and gals do not like the new bright and colorful screen?I love that they designed something interesting looking, but it hurts my eyes. My monitors are already at 50% or below on brightness output, and the new character screen is painful. I don't know who asked for this one. I've read numerous comments over the years of people wanting a brighter background during character creation, so that they could have better color selection. The lighting in that dank cave doesn't match much of anywhere we actually run around in.

Yeah, I'm one that asked for a brighter character creation screen. I liked the old log-in screen fine although I had asked numerous times for a Ravenloft log-in screen when in RL. This new one is pretty too. But I really like the idea of options, specifically player-selected options.
Btw I don't know about you but the Character Creation screen actually does seem brighter now. Did they make a change to it too?

Until it becomes Die Hard 2. Technically we will need a Die Hard to happen in one of the towers in Sharn first.

It would be nice to have one screen of each (wherever your camped)
- Stormreach
--- Houses
--- Korthos
--- Three Barrel Cove
- Sharn
- Forgotten Realms
--- Eveningstar
--- Wheloon
--- Tethyamar
- Ravenloft
- Hall of Heroes

I don't know about Hall of Heroes, its really not all that impressive looking to me. Its so dim and yet has lots of little neon lights like a Hard Rock Cafe.
I'm curious where would be the better Korthos backdrop? The sunny pleasant village on a hilltop overlooking the little harbor or some portion of the snowy ruined arches and aqueducts? Or maybe the ship wrecked shore? Personally, I like the sunny happy village but that's not exactly your first impression and I could easily see them having the white dragon circling the snowy screen similar to the red dragon in the Eveningstar screen.
Forgotten Realms... needs something from Stormhorns that is just such a magnificent wilderness zone with so many picturesque spots. It would also be weird for there not to be at least a couple Drow themed screens like a Schindilrynn with that incredible architecture and maybe something from the Underdark like one of the areas with glowing mushrooms.

I was thinking more of save/logout points. That way you can look at the log in screen and know exactly where you are.
Stormhorns are beautiful, but you can't logout there. It will default you back to Eveningstar.
Just thought about adding Thunder Peaks and the Eveningstar cave.
Personally, I would prefer the snowy side of Korthos with a White Dragon and a Mindflayer lurking about in the background.
