View Full Version : I think all classes should have pets

As it stands, only artis, and druids have class granted pets. Yes wizies get the skel warrior, but, that is part of the enhancement tree, and is considered a summon. (At least by me.)
I think all classes should have pets. Heck, in table top, rangers get up to 10.
My ideas are as such.
All pets have the same tree as the iron defender/wolf
Fighters get a war hound.
Rouges get a monkey. (possibly replacing the combat abilities with some snappy roguish things, ie lock picking, ect)
Sorcs get a pseudodragon. (possibly replacing combat abilities with some aoe's)
Wizies get a cat. (possibly replacing combat abilities with charm-like stuff)
'Locks get a hell hound.
Monks get a praying mantis.
Barbarians get a bear.
Bards get a raven. (Possibly replacing combat abilities with some snazzy bardish stuff, ie sing the enemies to sleep, ect)
Clerics get an owlbear. ('Cause let's face it, they need the backup.)
Favored Souls get an eagle.
Paladins get a horse. (Hopefully ride-able by lvl 12)
Rangers get a dryad.
Druids, and arties keep what they have.
If I've missed a class, or two, chime in. If you agree, chime in. If you disagree, chime in.

I see where you're coming from - but can't sign something that further homogenizes the classes to all do the same thing with different skins/animations/etc.

Great. Saddle every character I play with a dumb pet. Thanks. :(
I hope, some day, we get permanent followers that level with us. I hope that system includes some sort of Trait Tree for the follower. Allowing us to take animal followers instead of humanoid followers is a great idea. Forcing a specific follower on a specific class is a horri-terrible idea.
Until that day arrives I would gladly settle for more permanent Gold Seal hires available at levels 15, 20, and 30 because those are the most critical levels with regards character advancement. I will not rent Gold Seal Hires but I will buy them outright. More Gold Seal animal followers would be really neato. Also, I am a complete idiot for not getting the Alabaster Panther. (I am still kicking myself over that one.)
Edit: To be clear, I do not want a Trait Tree that diverts points away from my character to boost a weak animal companion. I want a follower or animal companion that levels with me, treated as an individual entity, that contributes to dungeon scaling. I assume this hypothetical companion will stand in traps and run off across the dungeon just like current hires. That's just the way DDO rolls.

I think all classes should have pets.
Why. What is even the point of informing anyone of this? We just HAD to know?

no but unlike you, i'll give a reason.
pets have bad ai, i only use them to pull levers.
i like my classes to different from each other.
palies can use more then horses (but the game doesn't support mounts and would be a nightmare to use in some dungeons.)
what about customization, a halfling pally is better of with a dog to ride.
clerics need a party, not a pet, owlbears can be summoned as a hireling though.
rangers don't need a dryad, they can already self heal, a barb is better of with a dryad.
fighters get a war hound? really?, the "stand in the back and heal class" gets an owlbear, the "stay in the back and nuke everything from afar class" gets a pseudo dragon and the one up front gets a dog, that will go over well.
and a praying mantis, you do know that even a halfling could accidentally crush it by walking over it, right? it's too small.
if you want a pet, get a cosmetic.

I don't.
Agreed.
However, I do wish that ranger animal/beast companions would finally be provided though.

I think all classes should have pets too, but not until the AI is vastly improved.

I suppose they could make another enhancement tree that any class can buy (like harper or vistani) that's pet-oriented. Not especially enthusiastic about the idea for many of the same reasons others have given above, but wouldn't be opposed to it either. Until then, if you want a pet, just grab a hireling (or one of the permanent hirelings like the panther or owlbear).

I would support that. At the state of the AI right now, I wouldn't use it though.
I'd rather have a customizable companion that levels up along with your character.
Knowing the devs, they'd probably make earning extra options for that companion the next hamster wheel. Which I'm not entirely opposed to.
Anyone loves a free lever puller. If that lever puller also happens to be able to heal, take a hit or (heavens forbid!) even take down a low-health minion, all the better.

DDO store purchase iron defender pet for all classes (this pet levels based on character level not artificer levels).
add Pet cosmetics..
The cosmetic skin lets you have the pet look like whatever available animal you want... like sheepskin on a wolf..
then they all have the same base tree and tree development as a regular iron defender.
leaves it open to add additional cosmetics via DDO store or other..
could also add pet enhancement trees with focussed nuances..

Completely disagree with OP.
Stay within the limits of D&D lore on this.

The AI coding required for even one new class pet is very large which will be a leading reason to not pursue more pets for classes while many other things require attention in DDO.

I think that we should all have a 'lock pet that strides in front of us - leaving death and destruction in its wake. All we need to do is follow and pick up the treasure.
Awesome!

This isn't something I would want to see. Pets work badly, are irritating and noisy, and I harbour a dark suspicion that they cause lag too.
Unless the AI were improved a great deal, my pet's fate would probably be getting flushed down my airship's toilet at 10,000 feet. That is, unless I could take it to the PvP pit and bet on it fighting against other pets as I enjoyed a tall glass of broccoli juice while socialising with my friends.
Thanks.

No thanks.
Doesn't fit DnD lore.
Pets (and hireling) AI are terrible.
Somehow I know the bad AI is causing hidden lag/chaotics. ;)

In the beginning, I was surprised to discover that rangers don't get pets. That said, every class getting a pet is a bad idea, for reasons of lore, lag, and power creep, thus I suspect this will happen. Pets will be the next* mountain of grind/power bloat for players to climb.
Pet True Reincarnation (PTR) - trade 3.8M XP + 1 Pet Heart of Wood, your character goes from lv 20 to lv 1, your class pet gets [x] permanent benefits. Soon to be introduced: iconic pet reincarnation, epic pet reincarnation, and then, of course, reaper enhancement trees for pets/companions/summons etc.
* after Super Ultimate Death Challenge Mode, of course

Unfortunately I would have to agree.
Even the classes that have pets like druids,
Artificers, PMs don’t bring pets to parties running reaper.
They’re one hit wonders.
Not to say some of the party members aren’t. ;)
Unless there’s enough CPU power to run the good AIs (like the slave lord master’s AI) on them.

Cosmetic pets. :D

Nope to all classes having pets. The only one I might agree to would be Ranger companions but I'd be happy for this being implemented as a big bump to Wild Empathy or a specialised summon in their Enhancement Tree.
What I would much rather is that any development time that would be spent on this is spent instead on improving the current pets and hirelings. If you want company, then a hire is your friend (or supposed to be). A hire that doesn't run into the aoe of a trap or a dog that doesn't blow up an exploding barrel would be great. A rewrite of those systems would be a much better option.

I think all classes should have pets.
Artificer and Druid pets are a part of their class features. It is a part of what makes the class unique. Giving a pet to every class is just as bad an idea as would be granting all classes the Heavy Armor feat.
I think that we should all have a 'lock pet that strides in front of us - leaving death and destruction in its wake. All we need to do is follow and pick up the treasure.
That already exists. It's called joining a Warlock's LFM. Or the LFM of any class that you think is just better than you are or could ever be for whatever reasons.
I think all classes should have pets too, but not until the AI is vastly improved.
It's not just the AI. It's unusual for the pet to go more than an hour without bugging out in some manner. There are different forms of this, two of which are: The "will run up to things but not attack/take any action" and the "pet is nowhere to be found but the hotbar is still there. Can't give it any orders including dismissing, and can't re-summon it because 'you already have a pet out,' even though it is AWOL." And then there is the 'horribly squishy' issue.
