View Full Version : Before I eat them, any epic Necro 4 or DoJ gear still worth keeping?

I am currently using Cannith gear from 23 to 28 and then switching to RL gear.
I have a lot of older Necro 4 epic items and DoJ and MoD raid items that seem never to be worth switching to.
I could easily be missing something, but I am thinking of munching them into oblivion.
Advice?
I have all the (non armour) Necro 4 items
Belt of Braided Beards
Countenance
Dissolution
Gauntlets of the Arcance Soldier
Many Hooked Greaves
Memoriam
Sightless
Visions of Precision
Noxious Embers from MoD

The Gauntlets have Arcane Augmentation IX, which gives a stacking +2 to spell penetration checks. Useful as a swap in.

Personally, I would just look at the item descriptions...
If you have an ability elsewhere and can use it there - Feed the gem
If you don't have an ability elsewhere, but wouldn't use it if you did - Feed the gem
If you don't have an ability elsewhere, but can see yourself using it - Keep it until you get another item that has it
I've fed my gem with all sorts of genuinely good items, just because noone else in the group where they dropped needed them and I could never see myself using them even when in a relevant class, because of how I play.
Sometimes an item is theoretically underpowered based on items that have come since, but the power is on a slot your normal sets leave free or switchable, so while the item should be rubbish it actually fills a niche for you.
Sometimes an item is theoretically underpowered based on items that have come since, but no matter how hard you farm, the "better" items don't drop when you are in the relevant quests (even though they drop for everyone else you know), so the item is worth keeping until such time as the better one drops.

When it comes to Bound to Character Items it is really going to be subjective to your character...
1. Will they Use/Benefit from the item?
2. Do you have a better option at the level these item are available?
3. Based on the effort needed to obtain the item, would you be willing to go through that effort again if you later determined it would be needed?
There are some universal items (useful regardless of build), those are more obvious items. Examples would be Mysterious Bauble, Jack Jibbers Blade or Epic Dusk Heart

I'd consider hanging onto items that have rare effects. So unless you're really pressed for bank space, maybe keep Memoriam, Sightless, Gauntlets and Noxious Embers.
It's not like you will get a huge amount of sentient weapon xp for them anyway. One or two runs through Chain 2 and 3 of Ravenloft is likely to produce a similar amount from named items and ML/NM weapons.
Thanks.

It depends on how you handle your epic leveling gear sets.
If you rely mostly on named loot:
I don't eat any of the BTA stuff. I just move it to a mule. The BtC stuff, I'll consume if it is no longer of value. At level 28, the Slavers stuff is all definitely better, as are the items from gnomework, Mines of Teth, Dragonborn Propehecy. So depends on what else you have farmed at that level. 28 is generally when I am equipping my slavers sets and a few key pieces from the other packs. That doesn't leave much room for MoD or DoJ stuff. At level 29 you will get into your end game gear set with Slavers + RL sets/items.
So I only keep the few DoJ or MoD items that I need for leveling. Consume the rest. The key items for me are Belt of Braided Beards for the teleport clicky, the Epic Litany (although there are armors and rings that hold profane at ML 28, too, and the slave lords symbol is a universally useful trinket. Deific Diadem - The Deific focus is a unique effect. And the DoJ goggles for a monk.
If you rely mostly on pre-defined cannith crafted gear sets at 20, 23, 26 to carry you to 28/29 when you equip your end game gear, then consume away. I still don't usually consume BtA stuff. Unless it is just really really useless.

I would keep some of those as not many people will run those raids anymore. Also, sometimes new items come out that use an existing slot and you may have to move effects around.
Noxious Embers are nice to keep for maximize clicky while the Spell Lore is better than Legendary Spinneret
Memoriam still has one of the highest available heal amp on it so worth keeping incase your current trinket becomes redundant.
Dissolution is a bit outdated but may have uses for the Acid absorption.
Belt of Braided Beards is pretty weak other than as a teleport clicky on classes that have low umd which is rare as you get 10 to skills at cap. I dont think arcane spell fail does applies to teleport.
Im now using Boots of Blessed Travels which I thought I would never use as was only place i could fit dodge right now.
The rest i don't know as depends on what classes you usually play on the character.

Thanks for the advice.
I have no epic slavers gear. Waaaaay too long and grindy. No epic GS stuff either. Same reason.
I hate having a ton of items I have to deal with. Rarely ever use the Necro stuff, so I think I'll eat it.
Looks like I will keep most of the DoJ bits.
Cheers.

Advice?

The Nero4 items, I think the Epic Litany is still nice around to fill a slot if you cannot find Profane +2 in other slots.
I would keep Epic Belt of Thoughtful Rememberance; because I like the dodge and greater regeneration and con on a belt; although the CON+11 is lackluster
as CON+19/20 are around on RL and Age of Rage items.
and the Epic Chord of Reprisals, because this is the only place you get soundproof on a belt for those pesky
sound burst stuns protections.
Belt of Braided Beards
good for a teleport clicky if you are not playing a caster capable of teleport or does not want to use UMD for scrolls.
Countenance
Dissolution
Gauntlets of the Arcance Soldier
Many Hooked Greaves
Memoriam
Sightless
nom, nom, nom these
Visions of Precision
I would keep this for my monk(s).
Keep this one for your monk or clonk or drunk, because this is the only place you can get insightful +4 wisdom... the +3 ki and daze and +15 DC stuns are also nice.
Unless you can craft better than insightful +4 wisdom items with your Cannith crafting?
Noxious Embers from MoD
I still keep this around for my casters, because I like free no SP casts clickies.

It's up to you. It sounds like you are simply trying to consolidate as much gear as possible in the Epic range. It's mostly BtA (minus raid stuff) so it is just like crafted gear. It's really up to your preference.

How grindy is "too grindy" is of course a subjective evaluation. But you might want to take a closer look at Legendary Green Steel. Collecting the 5,000 runes per accessory over 1 is pretty grindy. But making 1 accessory or a weapon can be done with a relatively few number of runs, and they are handy from L26 up.

Cannith crafting lets you make Wisdom +12/Insightful Wisdom +5 at the same level as this raid item. If you craft at level 30 instead, that goes up to +15/+7. The stunning is decent, and the +3 ki is nice, so this is still a good item regardless.

seems like the new gear outclasses it and because for whatever reason its the same level it makes pretty much all the other gear useless.
