Dear friends, and fellow Dungeons and Dragons players,
I began playing Dungeons and Dragons back in 1988. as a seven year old boy, with my big brother, in our bedroom. At that time, with my big brother who was then 15, it was my favourite thing ever. My brother and I would wake in the morning and open our books, and get out our dice and figurines and play all day. We would play all day, and go to sleep, and wake up the next day - I would wake my brother early in the morning - and we would play all day happily together again. And together my brother and I would go on an amazing adventures as awesome heros. Carnel Inforem (I still remember the name, clear as diamond, 30 years later) my big brother's Wizard character, and his quest to become the greatest wizard in all the world. My character, Kas, the fearless warrior who braved the depths of the abyss and faught Orcus and his minions to retrieve a magic sword!
That was all Pen and Paper. What a gift it was, Dungeons and Dragons taught me mathematics and language as a young boy, and taught me to love both subjects as they were both fundamental to an activity that brought me such joy and fun!
Who could have thought that years later, as a young adult in 2006, I would rediscover Dungeons and Dragons Online. To rediscover and explore again those fantastic realms of imaginative fiction. And for 12 years now, I've continued to explore and be inspired by the fantastical worls created by Turbine / Standing Stone Games, in the spirit of the original Pen and Paper Games. And in that time forged and earned so many awesome experiences!
The epic battle of me and just three other party mates to fight the Black Abbot back in 2009. Us 4 friends against an undead god. As we used all our wits and all our skill to overcome the abbots dark puzzles, and an hour long battle as the Black Abbot filled his colloseum full of rocks, stacked many stories high, trying to imprison us. But in the end, we heroes overcame the abbots terrible assaults, and through team work, skill, and luck, triumphed! And so so many other epic adventures! Too countless for me to tell here.
But what I can describe is the truly crowning achievement of Standing Stone Games to faithfully recreate the spirit of Dungeons and Dragons, i believe as Gary Gygax himself intended it. A story of friends adventuring and battleing against the perils, woes and foes of the world! The way this game has brought so many people together for so many great adventures is truly inspiring!
The last few years of DDO Development have been especially noteworthy as Standing Stone Games have labored to recreate the classic adventures of The Haunted Halls of Eveningstar, The Temple of Elemental Evil and most recently Ravenloft. To bring an authentic and truly daring, dangerous and authentic Dungeons and Dragons experience to us, the players. So reminiscient of the olden days of many of our Pen and Paoer adventures.
Well done Standing Stone Games. Hats off to you my friends! You've really done Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson proud, and all of us proud. I say that from the bottom of my heart. Thank you!
As a game developer myself, I can say that Dungeons and Dragons Online is a continual source of inspiration to me. DDO has taught me so many things about how to make great games! DDO game design, level design, and storytelling is second to none. Literally well done!
As a young child growing up in the 80's, along side my blessing of playing Dungeons and Dragons, I also had the pleasure to enjoy watching the cartoon series of Dungeons and Dragons - you all know it right? The Cartoon story about a group of friends who get magically transported to the realm of Dungeons and Dragons. I'm sure you do. Well, that cartoon was also truly wonderful. The kind of thing you might wanna show to your kids to bring them happiness too.
Well that show wa s awesome! Even that midget baldy Dungeon Master, lol. Surely thats what all Dungeon Masters look like right? Haha.
But the one thing I recall, after all these years, is the beautiful orchestral introductory soundtrack to the Dungeoins and Dragons cartoon.
Everytime I hear it, it brings me to tears to remember all the happy times and wonderful adventures I have lived in the realm of Dungeons and Dragons. To me it sums up all the love and sadness of fallen comrades, lost dreams, and newly found loves and new worlds. It's a truly beautiful piece of music:
