Permadeath

Would you play one? I would now and again.

Not a chance. Too much lag, and bad coding on top of lag. Was just playing, I have a couple of ways to heal / generate temp hp's - 3 in a row "clicked", didn't do anything, and put themselves on timers. Pretty hard to worry about dying in a situation like that.

edit: assumed you meant permadeath - I might've made a poor assumption based on post below mine.

I believe it's called "reaper 10".

Unless you have a more specific version of what "hardcore" means; everything in a PVP zone; friendly fire is a thing; can never re-enter quests; you need to loot a special item to lv up; dying gives you an X-hour stat penalty; stuff like that.

I dunno, can I take my developed toons to the hardcore server, or is it server-specific-toons only?

What do I get for playing hardcore?

And what does "hardcore" mean? Permadeath? Enhanced difficulty of some kind?

Talk to me after I finish racial lives on all three of my beloved completionist toons on Thelanis. If I were sufficiently bored and there were something cool (like cosmetics, I luv cosmetics), I might give it a try.

The fact that they, the developers, haven't created one is discouraging. They gave us Reaper before they gave us such a server :(

They have done it in other games and it works. It also tends to shut players up who take the easy way out of death. As long as they balanced it around D&D rules (i.e. allowing cleric/FvS's to rez you) I would be happy for such a server.

They would need to look at drop rates, xp, and bugs across the board (i.e. all packs) before releasing such a server though.

...Imagine a world without resurrection shrines, cleric hirelings (or at least cleric hirelings without resurrection) and players actually "dying" when the GM is successful and a public board to announce the demise (I mean success) of the players...One can imagine.

Speaking as someone who actually plays permadeath voluntarily but hates deleting characters -

I like the challenge. I love the way permadeath players work together. But I hate losing characters to circumstances beyond my control (whether failed saves, too many champs, or lag). I'll keep playing permadeath, but I'd be hesitant to join a sever that enforced it without some mechanism for disputing deletions

Only 28 point builds.
No tomes.
No Reincarnate.
No Destinies.
No Iconics.
Anyone on the server can access all content--that server only.

It might fly. It might not. It'd require investment that would distract from the core game. And NOTHING is stopping perma-deathers from playing that way on the existing servers.

This gets brought up almost every year. Worse off being in almost every game. It is a horrid idea, with no recourse. SWG blue characters ring a bell?

OP,

The problem with perma-death is the way it disrupts social interaction -- for example: you and your buddies level to 12, you die and reroll, then what?

If there were enough people playing then grouping wouldn't be an issue.

Now more than ever, this game is being tailored to cater to those that like the hamster wheel ("hamster whales"?), and whales want a payoff to all the investment, which is the antithesis of permadeath.

And of course, this doesn't even begin to address the technical issues of separate rules on different servers. Not. Going. To. Happen.

This is actually a major problem, different rules for different servers.

There was a "challenge" type world long ago, and it still creates problems for DDO from time to time, even though the rules were retracted and the world merged.
