Hi. Do rogue hirelings all automatically come with
high skill levels in spot and search ?

Or are you forced to level those skills yourself ?

Thanks

From the ones I have tried, they generally have skills suitable for normal runs at their level. You can use various enhancements, feats, items and spells (greater heroism for example) to improve their skills and it does make a difference.

It depends on the hireling. Some of them are great trappers and some are terrible. Every hireling has their own "build" setup.

And, of course, they don't tell you which is which in the hireling description. For instance, from what I remember the level 5 rogue hireling is a better trapper than the level 6 hireling, which is a thief acrobat and a TERRIBLE trapper.

The rogue hires do not need you to choose their skill distribution. That is done for you.

As noted, the effectiveness of their rogue skills is limited by the parties ability to buff them accordingly.

Either through passive methods like Augment Summoning and Past lives that Augment Summons or buffs such as spells like heroism and greater heroism or bard skill boosting songs, or luck boosting.

I was in the DDO store looking at rogue hirelings, and they each had their available skills listed. But none of them had disable device listed as one of their skills. Am I reading this right? Can rogue hirelings not be ordered to disable device or is this something the devs thought was so fundamentally obvious that mentioning it was unnecessary? Just curious, because honestly, having them disable traps for me is the only reason I'd even consider buying one.

That is odd, I've yet to use a rogue Hire that didn't have Search, Disable Device and Open Locks as an available skill.

If they don't have Disable Device as an icon, have the hireling Search, then click on the trap-box and tell the hireling to Use it, just as you would tell them to use a Shrine. They will then then (hopefully) disarm the trap. All Rogue hirelings can disable traps this way, that I've found.

Disable Device is "Interacting with" the Trap Box, Spell Ward or Bear Trap, so it's the same Icon position that is used as when setting a hireling to Guard or Attack someting specific.
Even if the hireling can't find something with Search, they can often disable it when you click the icon, if you have them pointing in the right direction and close enough.
All Rogue hires that I have hired have Open Lock and Search as two of their variable icons, and the other abilities are vary from hireling to hireling.
The hirelings seem to have good enough skills in Spot and Search to run quests at level, but even though the Epic Rogue hirelings are available for platinum, they top out at lvl 24, meaning that higher level quests (starting with EN of base lvl 25 and higher, EH of base 24+, EE of base 23+) can be problematic unless you have guild and other buffs to boost their abilities (they will get some things but not others).

Thanks, all. It seemed kind of silly that they wouldn't be able to, but I wanted to clarify before taking the plunge.
