Just wondering, be an artificer? Be useless? Heal war forged?

I do understand the problem.

My first life water-sorcerer was great in heroics, but now in epics I just can't get the DC up enough. My staple Niac's cold ray (which only damages on a failed save) almost never gets through and everything else ends up doing half to no damage.

I manage more success trying to cater my spells to the enemy (reflex based ones on fighter-y type baddies, fortitude based ones on casters etc), but its hard to work this out in the heat of battle before other party members just trash the mobs anyway.

As a supporting character, assisting with a few buffs, ice storms and sticking DoTs on bosses he is OK, but I don't feel like I'm keeping up in a party.

I'm putting it down to only being a semi-casual player; this character only being an alt with no past lives and not having the time (or inclination) to grind for all the best loot. I think being an effective sorcerer requires a bit more investment than certain other classes.

Really, what?

I personally just put up more threads about wanting an effective endgame :)

Really, what?

I grew myself a beard and started breeding rabbits when my time had come. It helped.

The role of the sorc is supposed to be primarily DPS, with DC casting as a secondary option. That suggests that, in today's meta, if you want to be good at clearing trash you would be better served to play a warlock or wizard. But that you should be able (situationally) to be a strong single target DPS party member.

It is not the most versatile class, given the low number of spell slots and limited SLA's. That means it is weaker than some other classes as a "jack of all trades" class or a soloing class. But it can be done if you have the skill, PL's, and gear.

All the classes in the game are capable of performing well into low skulls with the right build, PL's, and gear. When comparing them head to head with other classes, some are certainly better than others, but all of them can perform in PvE. The key is selecting the correct difficulty for your skill, build, PL's, and gear.

I built an enchanter blaster for r3-r5 and it did well. I prefer wizard and warlock slightly, but if they made one simple change to give sorcs better boss damage it would Even things out. The debuffing that increases elemental damage should also increase force damage for ruin, gruin and arcane pulse.

Currently, the main problem on all caster classes are the garbage DPS of all core spells, mainly because they cap at level 20 or earlier and because they need spell points and after the spell points pool is empty you can do almost nothing.
And for a sorcerer, the situation is even worse because they don't get any help for there DCs.
There is a lot to do with the development to fix caster classes!
A level 30 sorcerer can have a sufficient DC for death spells and therefore he is able to kill a lot of trash monsters.
Therefore the only really good working ability for sorcerer are instant kills like it currently is for every caster class but druids and warlocks.

There is a fair amount of gear from Ravenloft you may want to look at that provides some nice boosts to DCs and crit. Also, you may have grabbed a caster stick from the Anniversary. Do you feel like you are not doing enough damage? You need spell pen and dc gear, just spend some time farming it and you will get a lot more out of the experience. Most of the newer quest gear is BTA so that's nice, but if you raid that will still be BTC. At least it's a good class for leveling. Maybe we will get +5-10 SP per core in the arcane destinies to match the +MP that those trees are getting.

If you want to be a DPS caster above level 20, I know it's more-or-less possible, people do it. But I don't find it either fun or efficient. If that's what you're getting at, I understand.

You can, however, build to be a DC caster. The powercreep means you can hit solid DCs. You have room for all the important spells, more SP, and faster cool-downs.

So...what does a Sorc do? Almost all the same things as a Wizard, only more and faster.

:D You ask Elminister for an apprenticeship so you can become an old geezer who spouts long winded stories , get adventurers to you your chores even though you could probably do them all in ten seconds. In the end you get the girl and the adventurers gets lots of platinum, if they complain show them the great level 30 dagger they got even though they are two handed weapons users.
