View Full Version : Is the Battle Engineer cap worth it?

I have a level 15 melee artificer. Right now I've been doing pretty okay, but I can't decide how to spend my last 5 levels. I was thinking of maybe taking couple levels of rogue for evasion, but then if I stayed pure I could get that sweet +1 critical multiplier. Which do you think is worth more in the end? Evasion or the critical multiplier?

P.S Also thinking of maybe adding a couple fighter levels.

Currently I think the BE cap is the best one, but I do a CC-focused crossbow arti.

Personally I don't think it's worthwhile to do 2 rogue on an arti--a pure 20 arti is more powerful and more versatile from what I've seen.

I've done 40+ artificer past lives on my main (racial completionist every life as arti, plus several arti lives), so I've tried literally every single race and just about every combination.

Of course, I'm going to be revising my build slightly when the Renegade Mastermaker tree hits.

Thank you for the advice. I guess I'll be staying pure then!

If you need evasion for something you can always grab the Shadowdancer tree for a while. If you're int-based (and WHY wouldn't you be?!) Shadowdancer has good synergy and you get some other nice things like dimension door and a charm and consume.

And even if you're not currently in Shadowdancer Insightful Reflexes is well worth it if you're int based (which, of course, you are.)

You don't even need to invest that much in Harper to go mega-int arti because you can take the 3rd level spell Insightful Damage to get int-to-damage, so you need like 3 points in Harper to get int-to-hit (although spending 8 to get Know the Angles is recommended).

I am in the same boat as Psycho, did a lot of Racial past lifes as a melee/caster Artificer.

Yes the capstone of Battle Engineer is good. The problem for me always was, do i want to spend 41 Points to get it? You have to take so many "useless" things (for me anyway) in the tree to reach those 41 points, that it was never worth it to me.

Of course as a hybrid melee/caster i always wanted to have as many feats as possible. Thats why i multiclassed with fighter and/or Wizard,Monk. My usual build looked always like 16arti + for example 3 fighter and 1 wizard with heavy or 2 Monk for evasion with light armor.

If you are a ranged- or melee-specced Artificer and you plan to spend any time in epics, you definitely want that +1 crit multiplier. [If you still want Evasion too, run in Shadowdancer.] If you plan to HTR/RR as soon as you hit 20, it doesn't matter.

This is key. If you are not going to 30, splash away.
