with an error about not finding directx 9.

I'm running a Geoforce GTX 960m vid card on a Dell Inspiron with core i7.

Any ideas? I've tried updating the video driver but it's current. Game will run, but the frame rate is so slow that everything is very jerky. I just want to tone down some of the detail to get smooth graphics, but I can't change anything. I have tried reinstalling the game.

FWIW, I can't alt tab out to other running Windows or it will crash the game with the same error message. I haven't had any of these problems until the last couple months.

TIA!

You might have to switch in the advanced graphics settings to dx 9 or 10.
or wait for one of the tech guru's to give you more info

Is there another way to do this other than the in game graphics setup? Because if I change anything on that screen, the game crashes with a error failing to initialize directx, make sure directx 9 or above is installed.

yes there is, I know how, but won't take responsibility if you make a mistake, wait for a tech guru.

I take responsibility for everything I do, including taking random advice from people on the internet. ;)

So far, I went back to the standard windows driver. I still can't change the video settings or alt-tab without crashing, but at least the frame rate is high enough to play the game.

I have the same problem after I re-download after a computer crush. Is there a site that these older directx can be added to your computer even if you had an upgrade

https://download.microsoft.com/download/8/4/A/84A35BF1-DAFE-4AE8-82AF-AD2AE20B6B14/directx_Jun2010_redist.exe

You must download the FULL offline version, NOT the WEBSETUP version.

Why? The web version correctly detects your super duper newer windows 10 version, and says, bye!

The link above is from this webpage: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Just in case Microsoft changes the link above or it doesnt work.

Watch out when you download it from the above link, they like to add on a lot of useless stuff.

This worked for me. Better graphics, smoother frame rate, I can tab out to other windows and make changes to my video settings ingame without crashing now.

Thanks!

I have been away from DDO for 3.5 years and am thinking about coming back for the Ravenloft content. I logged in about this time last year and didn't have any trouble, but I had to download a 3GB high resolution texture pack before getting on a few days ago and now the game wont remember any of my Options settings when I am in game and I have to re set them everytime I launch. I think this is a similar issue to what has been discussed above because I get a window telling me the game has detected that I can run Direct X 11, and then loads the game at the lowest possible settings. I ran into this issue once back when they introduced Eveningstar but that has been so long ago I cant remember how I fixed it. I don't want to downgrade my Direct X because I'm also playing Assassins Creed Origins and thinking about getting Call of Duty. Since everything worked last year when I popped in I dont think its my system since I haven't changed any hardware since then. I will probably perform a complete uninstall and reinstall, but wanted to try my luck here first.

I installed DX11 so I can use the option in the graphics setting for DX11. I know that there can be many versions of DX on a PC that games will select at necessity. I had this option available in a previous install so I decided to go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=35 and install it. (will work on windows 10 as well)
Prior i have DX9 (installed by default at DDO install) and DX12 (came installed in machine).
There was no reboot necessary. At game launch after the DX bundle install the game recognized the DX11 and a pop up window asked if i wanted to enable it. I said yes. pretty simple.
So if you are having trouble with DX9 see if DX11 will work for you. I am not sure if the game uses both at the same time but i would tend to think not. But give it a try and see. Then post if that helped or not.

Similar issue with Direct9X fatal flaw, crashes game when any attempt to change graphics or alt tab out of game to window. Deleted game, fresh install fixed the issue that was crashing the game but alt tabbing still crashes client. These links above....im not a pc savvy type, would it be recommended for me to try these or should i take what ive got for now and hope that future patches fix the alt/tabbing 3d errors affecting some of us?

Make a new folder first. Call it whatever you want, I made mine DX. I made it in the C:\dx
after the files extrac, navigate to that folder. Click on Dxsetup and follow the instuctions.

OR: Pro-Tip: The installer will CREATE any directory you type in the box. So just type c:\whatever

Just remember whatever whatever is, and go there to run setup.

Tried that and still can't tab out.

Sometimes you have to have another window open to Alt-Tab. Try launching anything, minesweeper, or even just having a folder open.

I switched to Full Screen (Windowed) within Options>Graphics and this did the trick. Also set to Quality Detect Optimal Settings when the game didn't crash after I made that change.

You followed all the steps above? Made a directory, ran setup in that directory after extracting the file you downloaded from Microsoft there?
You've tried running the games executables at least once as an Admin? (launcher, client, etc)
Reset graphics options in the launcher?
Clicked go ahead anyway if the direct x installer says you dont have to?

Was this ever resolved? Having the same issue and manually installing directX didn't help.

Ok, so you put it on the highest DirectX you can support, and then into: windowed(fullscreen) mode instead of fullscreen. That worked for me.

That just causes it to crash on any DirectX I try. How did you get in contact with technical support?

I don't know then, I could not be helped by tchnical support, this was when fooling around myself.
To get in contact with them go to the DDO website>game>support, you should find their e-mail there.

Worked for me as well! Nothing like getting a brand new computer and DDO won't run on it.

One day we will get the launcher out of beta ;)

I've recently found that the only safe way for me to change resolution is in the UserPreferences file at My PC > Documents > Dungeons and Dragons Online. If I have to adjust my resolution for any reason, I get a DirectX 9 error on my brand new gaming laptop. I know it's not me, so I work around the error by adjusting my preferences.

"It works for me." (Not a guarantee of success. Do not ingest. Not for internal use. Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.)

Well I was able to install DDO on one User account on my computer with DX11 and High def. On other account on same computer it crashes when I change the rez to hight 1080p. Also dx9 is greyed out.
??

I installed dx9 june2010. I also deleted use pref and did repair resets.

Makes sure DDO can access the controlled folders:

Better description.

I tried you security stuff. Still get directx 3d error. I got the block messages and allowed access to document preferences.

Multiple User accounts Windows 10. One works with Hiz rez dx11. Other limit dx9 lower resolutions and game crashes with dx3d error message if I try to raise it to higher def. Game was installed on other account first. The first account on computer and a local account. So when I created the second account DDO was moved over automatically to it.

It sounds like the dx9 didn't get installed correctly, or its only available for the one account which is odd.

You ran that as admin? And I mean the installer portion after it unpacks?

I was hoping to delete the other account off this computer. I learned that Microsoft Windows and Store and Xbox need to have the same login User to work right. I was wondering if I uninstall DDO on this Windows user account will it be deleted on the other Windows user account? If it was not working right on the other account I would. But it is working great on the other Windows user account. It has Ultra High DX11. This one just has errors. I even installed dx9,10,11 June2010 on this account from 2 different folders. One from the hardrive c: and one from the user folder that was the default dx install path.

Also on the messed up account it would ask to install Hiz Rez after I reset and repaired. I think this is normal and it should already be installed.

Did a reinstall. Now both Windows User accounts are locked in dx9, but I have high rez in full windows mode. DX errors with Triple Buffer and Vsync checkmarks. So is there a specific fix to get dx10 and dx11 options and Triple Buffer and Vsync?

I found that the new install is defaulted at the 64 bit client. I was having all of the above issues, followed all of the steps. Issue still persisted.

I then moved the checkmark to the 32 bit client. was asked about using DX11. DX 9 was no longer grayed out. Able to change resolution and alt tab out of game.
