View Full Version : What is the in-game logic for Reaper?

Reaper Mode provides "challenge", Reaper Mode provides cool gear, Reaper Mode provides more XP, etc.
There are lots of meta-game reasons to play quests at Reaper difficulty.

"The DM/Dungeon is trying to kill you" logic might work as a logical follow on from some undead based quests, but doesn't work as an in-game reason for most others.
Casual/Normal/Hard/Elite are essentially just different versions of the same. For an adventurer in a wilderness entering a quest on Elite, it's essentially "oh... the weaker monsters got forced outside while the more powerful ones stayed at home". The same cannot be said for dungeons where the players get weaker the moment they enter, irrespective of setting, meanwhile the monsters get tougher and reapers spawn.

Is there a Hall of Villains in Eberron where all the bad guys (and probably the Church of the Silver Flame) hang out, with Stones of Weakening & Random Undead Generation & Weakening and Potions of All-Round Uber-ness & Invisibility to Undead for sale at a special vendor?
Is there a portal in Schindylryn (sp) that leads to the FR version of the same?

Does anyone know or has anyone been able to work out how & why Reaper Mode exists from an in-game perspective?

there is no logic like the one you are looking for. It was a system to bring challenge to people who thought the game was too easy, a system that was perverted to another grind, and with very questionable quality mechanics as well.

But, background? Current devs does not pay attention to that.

"You have cheated death too many times and now death has come for it's due." is the rationale iirc.
Kind of like Final Destination mode.

Kind of like Final Destination mode. This was the lore explanation when it was introduced.

Similar to the marut, but on a grand scale.
