View Full Version : FvS Multiclass?

I keep thinking that using FvS as a base with maybe Pally would make a good melee toon now. I think you would want to go CHR based for saves.

Yet, when I try to flesh it out a bit, it simply doesn't seem to pan out how I would like it to. I also thought to use some cleric levels and domains to get Displacement which would be darn handy for a melee toon.

Anyone played around with any ideas that might be fun yet?

Thanks!

im thinking for a melee build 12 fvs 7 bard 1 rog/arti/wiz cha based, this gives
you lvl 6 spells as a fvs heal or blade barrier, haste and displacement from the
bard and either trap skills or extra feat from wiz perhaps extend to boost the
length of haste/displacement and divine power. id run a short sword vulkoor drow.
a good fun build for going from 1-30.

The problem is the recent change in insufficient to make FvS by itself a viable melee (or ranged) DPS class, since there was zero buffage to Warpriest and (unlike clerics) FvS didn't get new spells / SLAs like Holy Sword this time around. So you pretty much have to multiclass if you want to improve your melee DPS, but you also have to stay majority-FvS if you want to keep CHA/WIS to dmg. Also since Divine Might is still a STR bonus, odds are you will want to use Know the Angles instead to boost DPS; so instead of being STR+CHA-constrained, you're INT+(CHA or WIS)-constrained, and that's if you ignore the stat pre-reqs for melee feats.

So I have yet to see or come up with a FvS melee build I really like based on the CHA/WIS dmg option. Just seems like there's too many restrictions on its use.

I was thinking something like FvS 12 / monk 6 / rgr 2 - Silver Flame monkcher. 14 racial / 41 AA / 11 Ninja / 11 Henshin with 3 APs left over for tweaking. Ranged DPS won't be as good as, say, jakeelala's builds (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/463636-Some-New-Thrower-Builds), but having Heal spell sure helps make up for that.

I guess I'm just not as interested in FvS options as I am in domains, though. Vish already has a cleric 14 / rgr 4 / ftr 2 AA build: Trickery domain for Enchantment DC bonuses and Mass Charm SLA. I was thinking of cleric 14 Earth domain for Earthquake SLA; combine with monk or rgr 6, I guess.

Got a few ideas going on, I'm liking the looks of 17/3 splits so that you still get fvs wings. (and only lose 30 HP, which isn't too huge).

3 bard - Swashbuckler for critical profile. DC's for bard stuff are based off perform, which is cha based. And fvs gets cha to hit which is better then bards. Will be missing out the tier4-tier5 enchancements though.

3 paladin - Defensive stance and great saves, both go well with a lot of HP for a healer or caster focused fvs, or even just for a melee who doesn't squish so fast. Counts as divine to give full duration of the level 6 deity feat.

3 monk - Looking into the idea of a build which uses centered weapons (drow w/shortsword or anyone with longsword or even longbow) with ninja spy focused on wisdom to hit, damage, AC, willsaves and DCs for abilities (both monk stuff and spells). Dex still gives AC/reflex and required for twf feats.

How about 12fvs/6monk/2?? split? Wisdom to damage with quarterstaff, spell points, and monk dc's. Maybe spend the majority of enhancement points in Henshin and Shintao. T5 Henshin and focus on debuffs as a melee style. Can't see it being a workable build, but maybe someone could make it work.

Without a strength build (and you need 17 strength for GTHF) you won't have very good tactics DCs, and your reflex saves will be terribad, but you'd have decent will saves at least.

Time to revive the SICKLE build!
https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/480734-SICK-LE-build
Bard 3 certainly provides the most bang for your buck in terms of melee DPS while minimizing the loss on the caster side. The drawback is you only have three options: Olladra (sickle), Vol (dagger), or Vulkoor (short sword).

Or do something with Vistani Knife Fighter + Blood of Vol when it comes out.

I'd also consider a Silvanus build: maybe FvS 12 / ftr 6 / monk 2 using mauls. I don't really know what the upside is for going CHA-/WIS-based would be, though, unless you really wanted to use Jade Strike et al?

KoobTheProud
10-08-2017, 01:41 PM
If you're centered I guess the upside is Wis to hit/damage/Will/AC/SP/DC's etc. It lets you consolidate lots of stuff on one stat. Maybe go Staff and cut out the Fighter levels and get wings plus usable DC's on offensive spells and cc?

36 pt build (+4 Tomes)

Human

FvS 18/Monk 2 could be Fvs 17/Monk 3 (for +Wis in T3 in 3 trees) or FvS 17/Monk 2/Fighter 1 for an extra feat.

Str 13
Dex 13
Con 16
Int 8
Wis 18
Cha 8

1 - Power Attack
1H - Cleave
3 - Spell Penetration
6 - Great Cleave
6M - Precision
7M - Two Handed Fighting
9 - Quicken
12 - Improved Critical: Blunt
15 - Improved Two Handed Fighting
18 - Greater Two Handed Fighting
21 - Arcane Insight
24 - Embolden Spell
26 - Perfect Two Handed Fighting
27 - Overwhelming Critical
28 - Mass Frog or First Blood
29 - Dire Charge
30 - Blinding Speed
30L - Scion of the Astral Plane or Scion of the Shadowfell

I know that melee/casters are very disadvantaged in the system but being able to focus hit/damage/DC's on one stat might be viable.

I'm trying a 10/6/4 Wisdom-based Silver Flame FVS/Monk/Ranger for Paralyzing/Terror Arrows, Incorporality, and high dodge for mid- to high-skull reaper quests. Level 13, so far pretty fun, although I'm chomping at the bit for IPS.

Does FvS need to be the main class?
Yes (http://ddowiki.com/page/Favored_Soul): "Your faith allows you to use your Charisma (or Wisdom) bonus for to-hit and damage purposes with your deities' Favored Weapon if it is higher than your Strength bonus. This benefit only applies if your Favored Soul level is equal to or greater than half of your total Heroic Character level."

I've been leveling a wis based fvs moncher also. Mine going to be 12 fvs/6 monk/ 2 ftr. I'm pretty satisfied with that split. You need all the feats you can get (and fighter does that better than ranger for this build), 10k stars is a must for a wisdom based archer imo, and 12 fvs will get you heal which is of course a massive step up for healing.

It's been a lot of fun. You have to basic modes: For DPS you go with elemental arrows and rotate 10k and manyshot. It's really pretty solid DPS. Not first tier, but respectable and with nice burst capacity. The other mode is switching to paralyzing arrows. You lose DPS, but you become very effective CC (wis based, with water stance, the generally favorable DC formula for para arrows, and the spamable nature of them makes it more or less "point and CC" even high will mobs), and with you big fvs spellpoint pool (and wis now boosts that) you're a pretty solid healer even as a deep multi-classs. I've been doing r4-5 in groups and the paralyzing arrows have been extremely effective. It's probably the best anti-reaper toon I've played. You see a reaper, point, click, and they're paralyzed. No more reaper trouble. Even keeping 2 or 3 reapers locked down is no problem.

The fvs HP boost, the monk defenses, great healing, and the nature of being a ranged toon makes it very survivable also.

Pretty even keeled leveling also. You get wis to hit/dmg at level 2 for free (no AP required) so there's none of the annoying early levels where you don't have your main stat to hit/dmg that you get with some alternative stat builds. And you get into the AA tree pretty quickly since you literally don't need points in any other trees than racial and AA early.

I'm considering putting together a cap version of the toon for alt to play ravenloft with. Hopefully it's not wall to wall undead.

When thinking of builds using FvS the limitation you have to keep in mind is that the FvS levels need to be the Majority Class of the build. So it will not work with as a splash class.

Thoden
10-11-2017, 09:56 PM
I will be building for that eventually, but as my alt is a dwarf for this life and the next, I have to take ranger levels (and early too). I think this is solid for the RTR train also... definitely elf or half elf (or even sun elf) in the long run.

Following up on my own post:

Or do something with Vistani Knife Fighter + Blood of Vol when it comes out.
Now that daggers become ki weapons in Vistani ("Deadly Blades: Your daggers and throwing daggers do an additional +1(W) of damage. You are centered when fighting with daggers."), I'm thinking FvS 18 / monk 2 will be a cool option for a melee/caster hybrid.

Wanting to LR my drow into this idea. Putting it into the builder, going 14fvs with the 6 mnk gets a lvl 7 spell. So cure crit mass or resurrection are pretty tempting for raiding.
I'm looking to LR my drow, and not worrying about what tomes to use when, so I left those out for this example. Tomes, not having to pick Drow, and using more points than 28 would all just be icing on the cake.
Also not completely sold on the dark monk path feat at lvl 6, healing would be better when in party, but only hurting undead is a crummy tradeoff. Would love to figure out how to get IPS without having to go 19dex to get there but the numbers aren't working out for that sofar. All suggestions appreciated.

Using this since I have to play it out with Drow. Went FTR at 20 for GTWF and most points into warpriest for the blur and haste as well as the weapon enhancements, racial tree for the short sword stuff plus a few points to get the ninja spy centering with short swords and DEX stuff. Could optionally leave out dodge and take maximize, empower, or lightning reflexes at one's discretion.

If you want DEX to dmg with short swords on this build, you need to have at least 3 monk lvls to access the 2nd Ninja core. If you're planning to take advantage of WIS/CHA to-hit / dmg from FvS, you should go WIS- or CHA-based. [I'd go CHA on a drow.] So either way, you should tweak your class split or your stats (or both).

Also monk 3 / FvS 17 hits BAB 11 by lvl 15, so just put GTWF there and drop the ftr splash. You have to delay MoF/GMoF by 3 lvls, but so what?

2/18 & WIS based would be better no? I am only thinking along the monk WIS ac bonus, and condensing stat requirements into essentially WIS>CON>DEX. Implosion could also be useful in its own right?

Lack of feats would be the main barrier I think, because of the compromise between DC / raw spell damage / melee.

Something I wanted to take a look at for a future life was the viability of a Fvs/Ftr Silvanus split running in GMoF. The Ki abilities (namely Drifting Lotus and EiN) are all really solid and each of the ones that have a DC are all WIS-based. Another +3 to Dire Charge also sounds quite nice.
Just food for thought.

In case anyone hasn't gotten the memo for the new patch yet, FvS' Warpriest tree has been renamed to War Soul. It's Divine Might is also now a multiselector that lets you add either half your Wisdom mod or half your Charisma mod to damage and tactical DCs instead of the standard Divine Might. Definitely a step in the right direction.

I'm still not convinced going WIS-based really helps all that much, but the pieces all fit together, AFAICT. I added Celestial Bombardment because...well, why not? :p Is it worth it? If you make it to level cap, you let me know... :o

I've been looking for a writeup of this myself, because I wasn't sure about the split, but...

Keep in mind, you only get Wis to Damage if FvS is half or more than half your total current levels... which means for a chuck of heroics, you won't have wis to damage with that leveling path.

Second, why not take Warpriest Divine Might for the Wisdom KtA? It's a nice damage boost.

Correct: for heroic leveling use DEX to dmg from either Ninja cores or DWS until you hit lvl 16, which is when your FvS lvls is exactly half your char lvl. I didn't bother with a leveling guide because you need to reset APs fairly regularly.

According to the release notes, Divine Will only applies to melee weapons. :( Have not tested to confirm that, though.

This is my version that I've leveled to 16 so far.

Wis to hit/dmg with bows from lvl2 on. Which works much better IMO than dex because you don't have to invest any AP to get it (and it's going to be higher than dex).

Fighter over ranger for an extra feat.

I take master of forms early (lvl 12) becuase the +1 passive ki generation is really nice. Trying to hit things with your dump str with handwraps is painful.

I have run this build on r5-6 on many quests, including the u36 quests which are reasonably challenging. Paralyzing arrows have been highly effective. You lose a lot of DPS by not using elemental arrows (which I will use on r1-3), but point-click-CC is pretty sweet. There's not a lot of zero cooldown CC out there. This is of course the big advantage of wis to hit/dmg. Presumably as the build hits epics the DPS loss for using paralyzing won't be a severe (base damage will become a greater part of dps vis a vis elemental arrows).

I like half-elf over elf for this build. Elf gives +1 enchantment DC, but -2 con. Half elf gives +1 wis, +20 Healing Amp, +2d6 sneak attack.

I wouldn't consider the AP distribution final. I would consider giving some some Shintao stuff up for another +1 passive Ki from Henshin. Or maybe some other fiddling between the monk/fvs trees. I have one racial AP from PLs, so that's what I used for the build.

I definitely like it better than ranger 20. DPS is pretty comparable (at least for heroic), and you get better heals (even as a multiclass your heals are way ahead of a ranger), better paralyzing arrows (and much less trade off between DPS and arrow DC), more HP (with the new +10/fvs lvl feat), more general buffs, and simple gearing (just wis and con).

Fighter over ranger for an extra feat.
My rationale behind rgr instead of ftr is for low-lvl access to AA & DWS enhancements, which should make heroic leveling a little easier (maybe). Also for +5m PBS and +2d6 SA from DWS, which would stack with HE rogue dilly, now that I think about it.

I take master of forms early (lvl 12) becuase the +1 passive ki generation is really nice.
Do you find Water stance alone to be sufficient? I haven't played a monkcher in a long time, so I added Contemplation from Henshin just in case. But if it's unnecessary, that's 8 APs I can spend elsewhere.

Trying to hit things with your dump str with handwraps is painful.
You gain DEX to-hit and dmg automatically from the first two Ninja cores.

Arcanum isn't a pre-req on HE AA (another perk), so you can spend 4 APs on the cores (+1 WIS, Dmg Boost), 4 on rogue dilly (+1d6 SA), 2 on Imp Recovery, and 4 on AA.

I had no problem with low level soloing r1. FVS has it's own lowbie perks also: cures, command, sound burst, nightshield. With max wis +water stance you're basically as a good as a caster fvs for DCs as a lowbie. Spell pen doesn't come up much till later.

It doesn't take that long to get into racial AA since you literally need zero points in anything other than racial and AA at first.

borderline. I rarely don't have enough ki to activate 10k stars when it's off timer, but it does happen. I don't have shadow fade yet though, so that's going to put more pressure on ki when I get it. I'll have to see in epic whether I value the AP or a twist more to get another +1 passive.

True, but even at lvl 16 I don't have them both yet. As mentioned, it's not that big deal as I rarely run out of ki though just using it for 10k stars.

Yeah, that's the way to go. I guess I just copied live where I wasn't high enough level for the 3rd core.

This is epic. I'm currently at 19 with the 17FVS/2MNK/1FTR TWF build from earlier - but THIS just looks like super fun. FVS is my new favorite class, def going to TR into this :D

Here's an updated versions of my build.

Kensai is a better way to get +1 passive ki than Henshin. I dropped Shintao (except for core 0) from this version, but I'd still probably recommend using it for iron skin until you have both 10K stars and shadow fade and need +2 passive ki.

While having racial AP would obviously be great, I feel it all comes together just fine even with none (I have 1 racial AP, which pretty much ends up being +1 dodge from ninja spy). The game changer here would be getting enough for No Mercy (% boost to helpless damage) from ninja spy.

Not anymore: Overwhelming Crit lost its STR (and Great Cleave) pre-reqs ages ago. Now all it requires is any Improved Critical feat.

You mean other than the one I already posted (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/490165-FvS-Multiclass?p=6031025&viewfull=1#post6031025)? No, I don't think so. I don't have anything to add to what SerPounce has said about his build, not least because he's actually playing it and I'm just theorycrafting at this point. :o

Please forgive if this question is silly, but haven’t played a ranged build since coming back. Is there any reason sunelf wouldn’t work for class on this build other than needing to lr out the clr level?

Sun Elves get Heavy Maces as favored weapons. No wis to damage for ranged there.

I myself wonder what kind of amount of Wisdom is to be expected with endgear from ravenloft and such. I´ve been wanting to do a Fvs multiclass with wis to damage since it came out.

Yeah I figured that out but thanks for the reply. Went 20 fvs that life. Will be trying 18 monk 1 clr 1ftr? For my last sun elf life after I knock out two quick racials.

This minor splash has been working well for me so far in r3 reaper quests. Only got to level 11 so far but with 5 piece slavers sorcerer set both Soundburst and Greater Command are working well for cc. Healing is a bit weak which is why Im staying pure until I get Heal spell. Only have 1 past life in each of the caster lives so missing 2 evo, 2 conj as well as 6 spell pen from past lives.

Can easily be changed from SWF to TWF as well as taking 1 or 2 monk or a 2nd fighter level over wizard. I took wizard for option for Eldritch Strike and Invis.

I might have done TWF if i knew that Single weapon enhancement from Vistani is bugged and don't give the 20 melee power when I have orb in off hand which made getting 5 piece slavers harder as couldn't use the orb.

Hey there SerPounce, Bastion of Purity and helf Improved Recovery don't work together, right? Tooltip ingame said something about that. How would this build work with a 34 point character with just +1 Tomes? I have a paladin and was thinking of TRing into something like a cleric archer and found this build, it looks awesome but I would like to be sure which are the right stats before reincarnating ^^u

Thanks!

I have a 14/6 FvS Rogue build I'm planning for next life. Onatar and TWF with paired Ban Hammers, then Mornh, if acquisition is successful.
Looking at Rogue because no chest should be left behind.
TWF chain to Greater TWF with one casting caveat; either Maximize or Max heal.

Str 12/+3 tome
Dex 15/ +2
Con 14/ +2
Int 15/ +2
Wis 8/ +4
Cha 16/ +3

All stat boosts to charisma, FvS feat selections will use charisma (grace of Battle).
CC will supplement the picking and trapping and fill any other gaps.

I'd like to keep Power Attack/Cleave/G. Cleave (thus I went human for the spare feat)

I haven't found any weak points in discussion within my guild but I have missed the glaringly obvious before.
Should all else fail, chests will be left behind, sadly, and I'll switch to Kensai.

Thanks!

This thread has many interesting ideas, but it mostly shows that, in the current state of affairs, a decent DPS melee FvS requires deep cuts into the class--cuts that undermine it's ability to function as a group/raid healer or caster.

Sure, the suggestions here may be okay for soloing, but they are comparatively weak in a group dynamic. Even on the soloing front, you might as well just go with bladeforged (and merely enough blue-bar to spam the racial reconstruct), warforged (caster or feat-based reconstruct), or undead (wizard)--unless you merely want to suffer through a degraded and shameful "Favored Soul" past-life (one only in name rather than in substance). There is some merit in wanting to be a backup healer (rather than a dedicated healer), but I haven't seen anyone talking that way . . . Using FvS or Cleric levels for *merely* self-healing is pretty lame.

The only exceptions in this thread are the deep-cut AA builds (which, like others, have nothing to do with the OP :)). Where these AA builds could really excel is in on the Banishing and Smiting front (especially the latter in Ravenloft content), but I didn't see that mentioned in the thread. Banishing and Smiting aren't even included in the Enhancements!

Anyway, there is another direction to go that relates directly to the OP. It doesn't cut as deeply into the class as the melee DPS builds. It's the Lords & Saviors Build (4 Paladin/16 Favored Soul) (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/477917-Come-Forth-Lords-and-Saviors!-PDK-Healbot-amp-Tank-w-Stunning-Shield), which I've been tinkering with since 2016. It is a "tank"/healer inspired by Vanhooger's Legendary Tank--actually still able to tank quite a bit of content, but already awesome enough as a protector/healer. It can pull aggro off of other players and take the heat when necessary and function effectively as a group/raid healer. Also, it has some modest dps to kill things as necessary.
