Shard, seal and scroll challenge

Hey DDO forumites. As some might know, I'm an avid hoarder of DDO items (side note: Devs, give me my trophy room!!!!)

Aham. Back on topic, I decided to set myself a challenge in the realm of hoarding: acquire the shards, seals and scrolls to make all the (old) epic items in the game.

Obviously my plan is not to make all of them, because of inventory and TR concerns, but just to acquire all the necessary components and the base item, of course.

On a craziness scale of 1 to flat-earth theorists, this is probably between Ancient Aliens and Tom Cruise. But that won't scare me. The RoSS will most likely defeat me in the end, but who knows...

According to my research, there are 163 old epic items in the game that use the SSS system. I'm including the Red Dragon Armor because it needs a shard, despite not having a seal or scroll.

Going through my bags, I found out I have enough ingredients to make 27 items already (aprox. 16.57%), listed below. Making tables in the DDO forums is very annoying. Sweet, thanks to Lightbear the Table is readable now :). I will update slowly as I go along.

The other items will come slowly, because I dislike short-term serial farming. My "farming" takes place over TR lives, so I usually do all quests once and done and maybe rerun some of the epics for mats.

Best of luck, I started almost a year ago when I finished my ERoSS. I currently have about 86% of every SSS. I have an excel spreadsheet for keeping track of them all.

SoS is my kryptonite though, I'm the only one in my guild who doesn't have one.

For the record there are 488 SSS by my calculations.

This is a nice project. Some of those old S/S/S items are among my favourites in the game, even if their usefulness is a bit dubious.

You're probably aware of this already, but you can get any Sands scroll through trading in other scrolls from that area. So don't go nuts waiting for them to drop.

I started doing this back in 2010 or 2011, have made or collected everything from old epics except for Sands items. Only made a few item , but have collected maybe a fourth of the amount of items there. I would have to say that sands items will be your hardest to complete. Good luck.

Once upon a time I was thinking of doing just that, except actually making one of every item to hoard... but then I realized the limitations of storage space and gave that idea up... though I have been hoarding the mats regardless (I'll have to check and see how much of each I actually have built up so far).

I know there are some I'm missing (only need the shard for the ERoSS atm), and I know I have many many duplicates (I know some demon sands scrolls I have over a dozen of, maybe even a score for a few). Maybe I'll join you in the quest to complete that table of mats!

But I'm mostly on Ghallanda, so can't share extra scrolls with ya.

It's not just the Ring of Spell Storing Shard that will suck drop %'age wise. All of the non-raid, non-quest desert upgrade-able items from the desert explorer have a crazy low rate of shard dropping and they only drop in ADQ and even less so in DQ(iirc). It was someting like over 95% of the time if you get a shard to drop in ADQ it will be for a non-explorer item.

We asked the devs repeatedly back at the time to revisit the explorer shard drop rates, but they said, "Well we wouldn't want the SSR shard to drop too often". "But what about all the other items?" "Well some of them are good. No change for now". (aka the last 8 years)

Well, it may or may not be the RoSS in particular, but it seems pretty likely it'll be some thing or things from the Sands.

I'd have to check, it I wouldn't be surprised if I already had S/S/S for every non-Sands Epic item.

Pretty sure the Scrolls/Seals/Shards all fit into Ingredient Bags.

Can get a large ingredient bag once per life easily enough if you do all the quests once, 80 Slots per bag, 7 bags should hold the lot and a bit more besides.

Side Note: I'm pretty sure I'm in the process of Filling up Bag 2.

I highly recommend getting a colossal or a gargantuan bag. Having everything in a single bag makes it so easy to check if you've got something already rather than having to dig through god knows how many bags. Colossal is so cheap and the benefits in ease of use and space saving are well worth it.

Another tip is some of the older epic gear can be reduced into essences which can be stored in a single slot in your bag. In order to take advantage of this you need to have made the item prior to the new augment system. You just put the item with an old aug slots in the altar of epic rituals and you get an essence in return that can then be turned back into an item by putting the essence back into the altar a second time.

I have been collecting shards, seals and scrolls for years on the Cannith server, and about 3 years ago made a spreadsheet to track them. I am currently at 84 different shards (51.53%), 92 different seals (56.44%) and 120 different scrolls (73.62%) and have 51 complete sets (31.29%). It is slow work, but good luck anyways.

Well, the OP has infected me with his insanity inspired me to track my own collection.

Here's a spreadsheet that people can download if they care to track their own s/s/s collections. The formulas show completed count and percentage, and numbers of missing scrolls/shards/seals, and will automagically update once you set a cell to '1' to indicate that you've collected a particular item.

So I finally went through my ingredients bag to see what all I have and do not have, and two things quickly came to the forefront of my mind. 1) I recalled that I had actually made a lot of them already but ended up throwing many of them away due to storage space vs usefulness of them, and 2) I spend way too much time in the Demon Sands and barely any in the Red Fens (I was recording how many of each I had as well. It ranged from 0 to 59 for scrolls of a specific item, up to 23 for seals, and up to 5 for some shards... while barely any Fen's items have seals/shards, and scrolls for them only reached a high of 6).

For total unique items I'm able to create with current mats (ignoring the ability to create duplicates), I'm at 91 (out of 162).

(and I was just thinking that I should delete more of my stored items held by my never played bank characters - or at least organize them a bit)

To OP - I have always liked the Sx3 system. I've made numerous items on the list and use them I was just the other day looking through ingredient bags to see what I have. A couple comments.

1. Are you making all of these things on one character?
2. Since you likely realize you'll never make them all, what % would you consider a successful completion of this challenge?
3. Which items are you most excited to make/use?
4. How often are you running the quests? While you may be able to solo epic ADQ/DQ you're always going to need people for VON. Are you going to focus on a certain pack for a while then go to another? Red Fens week, Spinner week, etc.
5. I don't see the difference between having the stuff to make them and actually making them in terms of inventory which is why I bring up question one. If you have to acquire the base item that is still taking up a slot whether or not its a heroic or epic version.
6. As people have pointed out, the shards will be the killers. I have up to 5 or 6 of some types of scrolls and several seals but the shards, oh yes those are the rarified air. I ran Tide Turns so often back in the day trying to get the Midnight Greetings shard.

I checked last night. My avatar owns 2 items, can make 14 more, and owns 42 unique shards. I think that is good progress for about a year of play. :D Since I only play solo the Vault of Night items remain out of reach. The Red Fens also pose an issue because I rarely go out there.

First check I did is count how much I have available: 4+ pages of each of seals, scrolls and shards.

Some small updates: I'm up to 34 items that are ready to craft (20,86% of the total). My latest aquisition is Roderic's Wand :)
