I recently TRd and found myself in Korthos... again. Now, part of me loves Korthos as the place I begun... another part of me struggles to stay awake there and loathes being put through the newb course over and over. As I struggled to stay awake through the pain.. I asked myself what would make this better... more interesting since I know I will be doing it 50+ times more?

New Beginnings

This will make TRing not so... Korthos...

It will make it more interesting for vets who already know the game are find korthos to be the most boring awful place in reality... I can not begin to describe the horrorible boredom of it... just waiting to get out of that place... why even bother when we could spice it up a lot with new beginnings? This makes my toon feel like its story has more validity. Being forced to repeat a beginning that everyone else has and that is designed for new players both makes my toon less interesting (his generic I dont care beginning) and TRing more boring... it is the worst freaking part!!! It is Korthos freaking island more then anything else I loathe about TRing.

Here are 3 possible versions, any of them work fine. If someone has a better version, that is even better! These 3 are just to provide some possible ideas to fix this so those of us suffering Korthos can instead enjoy the game more!

Version 1 - A changing dungeon - A randomly changing place. Put it somewhere easy to reach. And stack quest levels so you can do up to 6 levels deep and reach level 6 in the process, since you can simply repeat level 1 since it isnt the same quest. How nice is this? I dont have to run all over looking for adventure? I just step out... step back in.. and more fun! And my TRing toon is not doing the same stuff.

Version 2 - Expand Korthos - Add a lot more small fast to make quests like cannith crystal all over the island. Add some unique items, make it fun for us right away so we do not loath being there, and just want to get out as fast as possible.

Version 3 - New Beginnings - My personal favorite, add about 10 new beginnings for TRing vets to choose from that starting toons do not get to choose.

Lock the players in whatever place they begin until they complete the beginning quests, just like in Korthos. Upon beating the quests they gain same access as if they beat korthos.

These beginnings offer something else to make them for fun and reward.. very modest... but still enough to make the perfectionists leap. Here my idea is.. They get a +1 to some skill corresponding to where they start for that life. If they do that beginning a second time, the +1 become permanent. If they do it a third time, they get a temporary stacking +1 for +2 total. If they do it a fourth time, the +2 becomes permanent. If they do it a fifth time. they get a stacking +1 for +3 total for that life. And if they do it the final 6th time, the +3 becomes permanent.

House J - You have travelled far to learn of of the secrets of Nature said to be found here. Upon arriving you find out the place is being tormented by the dead and needs your help. +1 spot upon completion of this beginning

House D - You have volunteered to serve your city as a guard, but after reviewing your performance you have been selected for special missions. Your adventure begins here. +1 balance upon completion of this beginning

House P - You have travelled here to see a performance in the outdoor theatre, but as you watch the show, something goes wrong and you find yourself in the middle of it. +1 perform upon completion of this beginning

House K - You have come here looking for work, but the very first day you start your shift your team is killed and you find yourself defending your own life.. +1 repair upon completion of this beginning

Marketplace - You grew up in the city here, and this place is home to you. But the syndicate is making problems at the local tavern and they have asked you to help.. +1 haggle upon completion of this beginning

Harbor - Fishing was a good job, peaceful, not a lot of pay, but you will never forget the day the Sauhigin cam from the sea and tried to take over. You threw down your fishing rod, grabs a stick, swung it like a staff, and discovered in doing this perhaps you are not meant to be a fisherman... +1 swim upon completion of this beginning

Korthos - That blasted white dragon attacked your ship... there is Jeets... Hey, you aren't undead are you?.... +1 concentration upon completion of this beginning

Eviningstar - Elminster sees great promise in your eyes, and has asked you to meet with him. Will his speech last forever??? +1 spellcraft upon completion of this beginning

Ravenloft - A gruesome beginning, your own family has been kidnapped and will be vampire food if you don't do anything! Are you going to let your parents down? Get out there and save them!!! +1 search upon completion of this beginning

From out of Nowhere - You wake up in the 12 with a head ache. You don't know how you go here, or where you come from for that matter. A strange man is standing over you "this is the 12th time today this has happened, you look lost there, I can help, this is happening to others too, come with me and I will explain what we know so far about it" +1 heal upon completion of this beginning

Completion of all new beginnings (doing all of them 6 times) choose a permanent feat based on which beginning suits your taste or feat you like.. then choose whatever beginning (no further reward) is more fun for you if you TR from there:

Old School Korthos - Mark that gives Great Will and Iron Fortitude both (for doing it again...)
Mark of P - Mark that gives Force of Personality feat
Mark of D - Mark that gives Combat Expertise feat
Mark of K - Mark that gives Weapon Focus feat
Mark of J - Mark that gives Augmented Summoning feat
Harbor Style - Mark that gives Dodge feat
Market Place - Mark that gives UMD skill feat
Evingstar - Mark that gives insightful reflexes feat
Ravenloft - Mark that gives x2 toughness feats
Myserious - Mark that gives Improved Healing Feat

Feats go active at level 6.

Each beginning gets 10 quests of their own just like Korthos has, all small, yet different. The final of each one should be bigger somehow, doesn't have to be the size of Misery Peak, can be defending a gate or something, just that it ends up being the most challenging and taking longer to complete like Misery Peak does. Might add two or three big ones, and get creative how to make a small mod pump out more to do and such.

Do not make them chains. This way new players can jump right in if they also showed up in that beginning. It will be less often, but more interesting when it happens, and having a chain would flat out make it doomed to soloing. So, no chains, heck they should even be able to red box the last part, and gain access once all the 10 quests are done, but at least they can jump into a social group and up the fun a bit this way.

This makes the long road of TRing even more interesting and rewarding, gives us more to do and more to look forward to doing, and keeps us from getting bottle necked into the same rum drum newby low level quests. Anyone with 60+ TRs would get a nice reward along the way, while anyone with less still gets a nice reward along the way and the way is more interesting on top of it.

A lot of mid and high level quests have been added to a game that has TRing built in on a large participation scale that has lots of people TRing, and with racial PLs now added, there is more reason to focus on low level quests now then there was before. The game needs more low level quests now as it has changed.

These are some ideas, as I said if there is a better idea, even better!

It sounds like you don't know that you can skip Korthos talking to Jeets on the beach...
I haven't done Korthos every TR.

Having multiple starting points is great, but really unreasonable to produce. You're talking multiple packs worth of work. To add them one new place at a time would be cool, but what's the cost in other content. Those players who don't tr will always be unhappy about anything that doesn't add cap level content. The nice thing about current setup is we're getting new content that has has leg option. Thank goodness they finally added something at base level 10.

Or just going straight down to the dock and telling the porter "I'm out of here, now". That works too.

In theory this sounds cool, but it doesn't seem practical for the amount of work it would require. I also think there are other quest levels that could definitely use more quests to give us more options of what to run. Now having said that, I do think eventually having a second starting area would be cool, and my personal vote would be for Keep on the Borderlands. That was the first D&D module I ever played, and it would be very cool to revisit it in DDO some day.

I'd like to see a forgotten realms starting option, including heroic versions of some of the epic only stuff out there. This would allow non-iconic races access to FR deities too.

Look at the king's forest chain, definitely low level. Stop the priestess at the farm, stop the necromancers at the graveyard: level 2-3 stuff here. The heroic MOTU pack could easily be lvl3, lvl6, lvl10 chains with heroic HH, TOEE and Slavers thrown in.

It wouldn't take much more to flesh out a decent number of quests with a starting area.

Good point! For the houses and harbor... they can use already existing places like missing, invasion, etc... just put different stuff going on down there. Hand craft a couple and recycle most of the rest... done.

Also.. No.. I didn't know I can skip the whole starter quests when I TR my main toon. How, please tell how so I can get out of there sooner!

When you are on the beach and talking to Jeets and say that you want to skip the Grotto. That will take you to "sunny side" Korthos and allow you to choice of items like you had done the Grotto.

Once on sunny-side Korthos, you can talk to the guy that transports you to Stormreach. He will only talk to you on the sunny side.

Actually, if memory serves he will now talk to you on snowy side as well.

Note that if you misclick out of habit, you can't change your mind - once you start talking to Jeets, you're locked into The Grotto. However, you didn't miss the boat - literally. Once in Korthos, just skip down to the dock and ask the NPC at the end of the dock to take you to StormReach.

This is handy if you want to grab your collection bags before hitting Korthos, to grab Ship Buffs, and/or have some gear in a Shared Bank, etc.

Note that this option is NOT possible for the 1st character on any server. You can still cut out of Korthos to Stormreach at any time, but you have to run The Grotto once/server/account.
