Multiclassing Help (DC of spells)

I've messed around with multi-classing in the past, but never truly got into it. Might be a silly question, but I want to make a warlock wizard and the DC for spells with a wizard is based off of intelligence and the DC for a warlock's spells is based off of charisma... so what do I put points into charisma or intelligence for spells or both? Also if I put points into both charisma and intel do they stack together for spell DCs? I just know that warlocks and wizards use some of the same spells. For example both wizards and warlocks have Wail of the Banshee, Phantasmal Killer, Otto's Resistible Dance, ext. Just a little confused on how the charisma and intel for a warlock wizard works.

Heavily splashing dc casters is not going to work

You might be ok with a 2 class splash like rogue or monk for improved defenses

Or fvs for sp regen any more then that you won't have the dcs

Most heavy splash casters are usually shiradi casters

It doesn't matter if they both know the same spells it just matters which "spell book' you are casting it from.

When you cast a from your wizard spell book, it will use your wizard level and intelligence for the DC.
When you cast a from your warlock spell book, it will use your warlock level and charisma for the DC.

You will have 2 separate spell books, one that uses Intelligence, and the other charisma. Int and Char wont stack for Dc.

Multiclassing a caster focusing on DC will ruin your character. DC is also based on class levels, and those will not stack.

If you want high DC's on your spells you have to go pure, and max out your caster stat.

The short answer is: don't multiclass caster classes with different casting stats and expect to hit viable DCs for your spells. Especially when you're new, it's better to pick one class and stick with it until you master it.

The heavily MCed caster builds you see are usually based on spells which don't have a DC and therefore don't suffer. E.g., many epic sorc / wiz builds are based on the Shiradi (http://ddowiki.com/page/Shiradi_Champion) ED + Chain Missiles (http://ddowiki.com/page/Chain_Missiles) spell. Each missile from Chain Missile is another chance for a random Shiradi proc; so these builds exploit 3 separate CM casts (sorc spell + wiz spell + Evocation Archmage SLA) as well as various tricks for boosting CM's caster level to get extra missiles.

@OP I think the big question is how many levels of each you are taking and if you need to focus on DCs for both.

Wizard has the most flexibility of spells and schools
Warlock is less flexible on spells - Not easy to switch as compared to wizard.

Wizard does not gain any casting benefit from Charisma, but Warlock can use Intelligence - Even has an ability to suck Int from mob to use temporarily (Good way to boost DC of wizard spells)

I would lean towards the attribute of the Class that has the most levels or the one that you will use most of your DC nature spells from. Leaning more on Non-DC spells from the other class.

So while you won't necessarily have the Highest DCs you could have some working DCs based on build (levels of each) and available gear.

^^This has truth. Another example of this is Wizard/Sorcerer - These share the same list of spells but depending on which class you set them up with will depend which caster attribute is used.

^^This is not entirely true. You don't need to be pure many 18/2 Wizard/Rogues have very workable DCs

What has to be looked at is Available Enhancements for Casting Attribute and Spell School DCs <- This will be limited based on the Number of Levels, more so with Cores as you only need 5 levels to access a 5th Tier. While you can loose 1 to 2 DC by not having the capstone that in itself does not "greatly reduce your DCs"

Available Spell Levels - This is effected by Heighten's ability to increase your DCs. You potentially loose 1 DC for every 1 Spell Level below 9 you don't have. However, classes with just 6 spell levels can also achieve a high DC.

What gear you have available, especially at level 30 a large percentage of DCs come from Gear that boosts caster attribute and school.


Now the part that will suffer most is Spell Penetration as that uses the Caster Level for the spell.
