I want to sacrifice my Alts! On an Alter! With a knife and screaming!
Ok... that is too dramatic!
But wouldn't that be a great new feature to deal with alts some players don't want anymore that are... sitting around... being pointless.
And what a great way to restore used name slots for first names... I bet some good ones might even free up.
Heck... old players might be tempted to sacrifice their toons... so much fun!!!
Off course there is something in return... why else a sacrifice right?
Maybe a new machine in cannith... soul recycler!!!
Just take your unwanted trash toons to the doom device and tell them its okay to jump in! And BAM!!!
They turn into exp stones that automatically appear in your bank!
Off course, you don't get ALL the exp from them, you get... 75%!!!
That is it. Nothing else. Toon deleted forever now and you recycle time.
This could help a lot of people catch up to the the top players for more well spec'd toons to help with raids on top challenge levels R10!
It would help save those who wasted time like me on alts when for the last 10 years I should have been focused on my main. I can at least grind them for 75% to help catch up, so my time isnt all wasted!
What about alts with past lives? +50% per a life and 75% on first life.
Lets clean up DDO, too many dead alts sitting around doing nothing! If you love your alt, dont grind it. At least its better then deleting it for nothing.
And yeap, this is a natural response to power creep for many who won't be bother with alts anymore like myself.
Or shall we be punished because we are hated???
Iconics lose 15 levels value off course, so they get just 16-20 worth. Much less.
Vet level 7 builds, same thing, only losing 1-7 worth instead.

Not trying to debate. Just wondering what to do with my alts and attempting to find a solution.
Because I don't got time for them... ever again!
Just getting my main caught up now... can't blame me for trying! I spent the entire time on those stupid alts. I hate them now!
Main only.
What do I do with these alts?
Might as well toss out some ideas that might help myself and possibly others.

I deleted 5 1st Lifers on Sarlona just this week and I'm looking at maybe deleting more on other servers too as the potential grind has just gone up yet again by another huge amount.

Wouldn't it be more fun to do it in style?
Something cool... so far I thought of the Alter and Doom Device.. Im thinking... thinking of other possibilities... a giant Crystal!! Or climbing the top of a giant floating stone that stands :P
No wait... a giant stone that hovers... huge... and the toon walks under it and it smashes him into an exp stone and then sends it to bank!
I sacrifice mine to the storage shed.

Why delete your toons? The anniversary is coming up and it is likely we will get some goodies for our already made toons - if anything you should be making new characters and filling your stables!

That's the sort of thinking that got me a bunch of toons I ended up not being able to play and also spreading me way too thin so my mains also didn't see enough play!
Been there, done that, I just deleted a toon on Thelanis that had a SoS from the last anniversary - A SoS he's never used!

Ditto that!
Me 2!!!
Exactly!
We are not alone!

Maybe one option would be to turn them in to forum tears. There has been zero detrimental changes affecting alts. Any issues belong with players, not anyone else.

I not only agree with this sentiment, but I was looking at a toon today that I have absolutely no idea what I was planning to do with it. It's been sitting at 12 evidently since right after Warlock released, since it has a few levels of 'lock on it, but it also has a Raiders Box in it's bank... Surprisingly enough, my first thought wasn't "I should delete it", but "what was I doing with this", and since builds are routinely discussed in guild, I asked around if I'd spoken of it to anyone else... Sadly I hadn't, guess I'll figure it out at some point.

Too exploitable
make a 7th lvl toon from the start, kill it for an exp stone,
rinse and repeat

Just gear strip your unusd alts of their useless junk and use them as mules

See, I just keep my alts and don't worry about it if I don't play them much. That way when a guildie or a newish player needs someone to run with I can generally swap down and play with them. Heck I even keep a character slot free in case I need a disposable veteran. Often its a character I haven't played for a while, I still have some with only pre-loot pass gear actually, so i make sure they know I'm gonna die often, and we carry on. Who cares about the power gap at that point?
I've only ever really cared about the indirect effects of the power gap - i.e. the dearth of PuGs for different difficulties at multiple level ranges. Beyond that.... /meh. I have my mains, and when someone needs an extra warm body, I've generally got it covered. It all works out.
I mean, I dont' want to give the impression that I'm needing to swap down and help out very often, because it practically never happens now except with guildies. But its there for when it is needed.

Ok, since im relly disapointed in your posts il explain to you how you are wrong.
Il start by saying you are totally wrong, entirely wrong and not just wrong, but purely wrong.
Ok, not that i have that "offensive" sentence out of way i will explain to you how and why exactly you are wrong.
First of all you approach the whole "alts" mentality wrong, because you don't clearly play this game.
Everyone with a minimal ammount of play experience in ddo in the past 5 years knows what and how to play on alts, there is only 2 approaches.
1 approach is the wrong one and the 2nd approach is the correct one.
Let me tell you this, you picked the wrong approach, and your wrong approach has the demerit that it doesnt benefit ddo nor yourself at the same time.
So you are actually hurting the game and yourself as a player.
Ok, the first approach you took was to make alt characters on 1 account.
That is wrong, game doesnt function to promote this for years.
2nd approach, the correct alts approach is to make multiple accounts.
How is that the correct approach?
First, both characters gain epic xp/that counterd the epic reaincarnation 1 char focus.
Second, both characters are playable at the same time /this adds versatility that alt characters enjoy, multiple playstyle swaps on the fly.
Third, as you need to buy packs on main and alt accounts this greatly benefits ddo as a game as you produce "income" and paychecks for our developers.
And lastly the "new game feature" aka reaper xp is also easily countered by this playstyle.
/you dont need to have a alt account you can make up to 6 and in worst case 12 if you want to 12 box raids or play on 2 instances at same time(some did this, i tell you we have crazy players in this game, mostly koreans tho and couple of us that had no life cough cough)
Ok, got that?
Did you see the light?
How wrong you are?
Just approach the issue with a different solution, and i dont speak out of "could maybe possibly happen", my friend that i constantly group with has 2 epic/heroic completionist mains and my guildie has a horde of alt accounts, most completionists or similiar or just loots bots.
Its proven ingame that this system works and functions and you should adapt as well.
If you expect that characters that werent the same ammount of time in a quest should be capable to complete hardest 10 skull without effort put into building them, then you are wrong, entirely wrong, totally wrong, wrong beyond repair.
This is how ddo functions now, please note analyze and play while keeping in mind the following sentence: "At this moment of time most effective way to play ddo is to focus on ONE character per ACCOUNT".
Ok, hope that cleared some things up, sorry if i came out rude, but really, just change how you look at things and you will see a clear solution.

Don't sacrifice alts. Make new F2P accounts and make your alts there, one per account. Don't buy anything for the account. Those alts are going to be just storage space and they're going to get multi-boxed through the appropriate quest lines to get the favor for inventory and bank space. You can TR them if you want, assuming you can farm up the right hearts to do that, but basically alts are useless in the ever-expanding hamster wheel other than as storage.
I'm deeply regretting the tomes I bought for a couple of alts on my main server a few years ago. I'll never spend cash on anything but my main again. The game system is just too harsh in terms of punishing a player for time spent away from their main.

I have decided to keep all my pure prestige class builds to have access to any role I want when I want.
That is still 39 toons.
I will devote 80 to 90% of my time to the Main toon to catch him up.
I can't get myself to delete the pures!!!
The multis (I screwed most my multi class builds up anyways.. but got like 5 really tough ones.. Zyxis the stealth strider assassin is a monster at gaining levels fast.. who has to die... Ziptoss, the sneaky thrower guy still beats him and is absurd... how did that happen? Why is sneaky thrower guy so awesome o.O) are going down though. Too many toons, too much management! I am keeping only 2... a Togg Wolf and Sneaky Thrower guy!
It would be a great feature to be able to recycle them instead. But Ill be fine with deletion, just to make certain I commit myself to this.
I still got 42 toons. They are epic. One life (intended, a few TRd) but role ready for being whatever I feel like :P
I suppose the devs occasionally consider whether this is a good idea. They could certainly sell some tool to accomplish this. And of course the players will try to exploit it. There might be some "sweet spot" of a level where it would be easy XP. I don't particularly care whether this actually happens or not.
But the idea that Alts are useless is incorrect. It depends on your goal. I can level a first life alt just the same as I can level a multi-life character. In fact, I am called a casual player because I'm not on the TR train and yet it is MY characters that don't have the benefit of Past Lives, Raid Gear, etc as I play so who is really the Hard Core player? The people who have made it as easy as possible by giving their character every perk? lol
And clearly a multi-life character isn't necessary for Reaper either. So what is the point of TR? I think Alts are far more relevant. New goal for the Hard Core - Reaper 10 solo at level on a first life character with no Raid Gear or Epic Destinies.

+1 OP love it. Even if you get zero exp for veteran status or iconic levels, it would be nice to get something for them!

Definitely /not signed. This seems like a good idea on the face of it, but it would make getting past lives way too easy. Why? Here's why: It's far easier to level a first life character to 20, then TR, then sacrifice them for the past life than it is to level a single character through 13 past lives (or however many classes there are now). And that's assuming it was restricted to sacrificing characters who have a past life feat. If you could sacrifice a level 10 character and get an xp gem (like what you get from Daily Dice), why would anyone actually play their "main" character? Again, it's far easier to just level a first life character (who could start at level 7 anyway), then burn them for an xp gem.
Now, if your idea also included forfeiting a character slot in order to do this, and if you also could only do this with characters with at least two heroic past life feats, then there might be enough of a sacrifice involved to keep the exploitation to a minimum. At the very least, it would raise the cost of use enough to discourage most players from doing this. Maybe it should also require a +20 lesser heart as an ingredient in order to keep the cost of doing this relatively high.

I would love to take the xp from a bunch of my toons and dump them into the remaining toons I play
25 toons
I play 6 of them now
19 toons with some of them being multiple lives sitting at 30 would be awesome for XP
Won't ever happen .... so for now they make great bank toons ( of stuff I don't need and will never use again )
