In combat where there are AoEs firing off, the visuals seem to cause a lower frame rate on the laptop I'm using. It is more the fog and explosion type effects that seem to be a problem more than things like blade barrier or chain lightning, for example. Combat with AoEs is really the only time I see much of an issue. Any idea what the best setting graphics setting to adjust to improve this while causing the least impact to the graphics quality of everything else?

Post video effects under advanced graphics makes the things you describe much more flashy. I'd try to turn that off.
Turning it off does make some things look pretty bad though (like water surfaces).
For general problems with your framerate changing DirectX settings usually has the highest impact (on my machine DX9 runs by far the smoothest).

Thanks Eth - I'll try these out and see if I can get a better balance.

Yep, turning off post video effects is definitely a graphics quality downgrade. Yuck.
I have DirectX 12 installed but the only choice in options is DirectX 9, which I assume means my video card is not compatible with higher versions.
Strange, I was playing around with some things. I even bumped my graphics quality up from "very high" to "ultra high" while I was running around the harbor in the rain. Saw some new fog effects there I hadn't seen before. No frame rate issues. No issues at all. But have one tiefling wiz drop an acid rain in DA and it will will slow things down...

I know this may be a bit off topic, but reading this reminds me.. I've always played on a decent-good laptop, but recently I saw a friend of mine playing on a top of the line desktop with all settings on top quality and in 4k definition... The graphics blew my mind, this really is a beautiful game considering how old it is!

My rig has a hard time with particles. Turn those down low. Try leaving post effects on, trilinear (can't remember the actual thing right now. Polygons, rendering. Uh, what will it be like when I really am old?); most of the lighting effects and shadows off or low. I also run DX9 and really haven't noticed much difference when trying the newer versions. With this I can run most other settings on high or very high.

I agree. I see people asking for a full blown graphics update, but I don't really see any problem with this game's graphics. They might not compete with the newest PS4 titles, I suppose, but it's still a good lookin' game. I have a 4k display and it does look awesome at that res. Not usable for me though. The poor graphics card can't keep up with the animation at that res. And the text is way too small for me to read.

Ha, know what you mean - having one of those word recall days myself. Looks like "texture filtering" is the option. And yep, changing it trilinear does seem to affect... uh ... partically things. Logged in on an auralock and can see differences in the aura. That said, it doesn't seem to be a huge graphical downgrade, so I'll try that and see if it's a performance boost in the problem situations. Thanks!
