Gen Con returns to Indianapolis from August 17-20, 2017 to celebrate the historic Gen Con 50... :)
http://www.gencon.com/
Getting this year's thread started so we can start penciling in thoughts & plans for the gathering this year. Looking forward to seeing if SSG's newly garnered FoM buff allows for some official attendance this year.
Traditionally, the gathering has been on Friday evenings from approximately 8 PM to closing time of the tavern we decide to invade, on a come 'n go as you can basis.
Stay tuned for developments.

Thank you! \o/
We've been trying to go for years but never had the money. :p
We still don't have the money, LOL, but I found it it was #50 and we all decided we were going to MAKE IT WORK.
Because if we're only ever going to get to go once, at least the one we made it to was the big 5-0!

Darn looks I will miss you guys yet again this year. Just purchased badges for Saturday and Sunday. I work M-F and cannot attend Friday because I work until 5 sometimes 6pm EST. But I only live 65 Miles North of Indianapolis so if I have the energy after work Friday I may drive down and have a few Not Your Fathers Rootbeer with you guys.

The past many years, our Gathering is not an official "event" or anything through Gen Con. Is just an informal get-together to swap tales over drinks & bar munchies.
The ancient scribes tell tales of the olden days when the Powers That Be were the original organizers of the Gatherings, and attended in official capacity with much swag and sharing of secret gossips. Alas, in the years thereafter came the great and terrible Vast and Mysterious™ whereupon the Powers were forbidden to officially support the great gatherings. Not to be denied, a valiant few rallied forth and did take on the quest to save the great gatherings, and all things were good. ...for a time. Then came the year where the sacred gathering grounds known as Jillian's were thrown down into ruin. There was much anguish and gnashing of teeth upon hearing the fell news. Still yet not to be denied, the ragged group of survivors again sallied forth to acquire new territory. In most recent years, the territory known as Sevrin Bar has welcomed the few surviving rag-tag refugees with open arms.
More recent divinations have yet to reveal what the future holds. Only one thing is known for sure - the Gathering shall NOT be denied!

I'm making sure NOT to schedule anything for Friday night this year...
So far, I do know that I will probably have dinner with some friends (It's my cake day that day!) other than I'll be at the meet up.. I will bringing my Digi Recorder to grab some audio for the podcast as well!

I have my tickets, but don't have a place to stay yet. Will probably do the farther-out hotel and drive in thing, as even AirBnB over that weekend is crazy priced.
I'm thinking we should keep the meetup at the "Severlin" (Severin) bar, as it seems to be a place that is both nice and not overly crowded that weekend. It's too early to say what kind of support I'll get for GenCon in terms of...stuff...but we'll see.
I won't know if I will still be in the area until July so I if go I,will, have to get a room further out its only 2.5 hours from my current assignment so I hope I extend again

GenCon Pro Tips from someone who has gone the past 6 years.
1. Do not buy your badge online.
2. Do not buy your badge online then try and buy tickets online. They sell out within seconds and you will be extremely frustrated.
3. Buy your badge when you arrive Wednesday. Little to no line, general tickets are cheap and you can almost always squeeze in to the game you want by using general event tickets.
4. Get a hotel away from downtown. We are staying about 10-12 minutes away paying $89/night. Uber is cheap. ~$12 to ride downtown and you avoid traffic, hassle, and paying $20-30 to park near the ICC for a day. Uber kicks butt.
5. Flying is cheap. I pay around $200 at most for tickets bought around March/April. You can still find tickets and Uber to your hotel.
6. Plan your Vendor trip in mid-morning or afternoon. Avoid the Vendor hall when it first opens and at lunchtime it is wall-to-wall people.
7. There is always D&D, Pathfinder, board games, card games 24x7. Around the clock from Wednesday to Sunday night you can find some group of people running some kind of game.

In general I'd agree, although I personally prefer buying my badge online and getting it mailed to me, so I can just walk in on Thursday without having to deal with lines. If you can arrive in time for the Wednesday pick-up, it's not too bad, but DO NOT try to pick up your badge on Thursday, unless you want to spend most of the day waiting in line. I would also add that the convention center is nuts when the con opens each day, but if you show up a half hour later, you can usually just walk right in.

Out of curiosity what hotel
I travel each year with around 5-6 friends that play in various D&D tabletop games. One of them booked our hotel this year which I want to say is a Super 8 around 10 miles or so South of downtown. We have not stayed here before as we usually rotate. One year we were fortunate enough to get a room at the Conrad for around $220-230/night which was fantastic. Getting in the GenCon housing block is a waste of your life force so don't even try. If you want to stay downtown my suggestion is to reserve your room while you are at GenCon for the following year, or be prepared to pay $500+/night. No, I am not making that number up. Rooms this year can cost that much or more downtown if there are any left.
Again, buy your badge Wednesday evening when there is no line (you can go any time at night we usually do this around 8 or 9pm to buy our badges/general tix). Walk by the game you want to play at and look for the ST in advance to see if you can get on a wait list if they are full. I do a White Wolf LARP every year which runs Thursday-Friday-Saturday nights from 7pm-1am and for me that game is worth the trip to GenCon with friends by itself. Getting on a table for Pathfinder or D&D is extremely easy as these games run constantly. I wouldn't hold your breath for anything Warhammer related people buy those tickets within seconds of being released and you have no chance at all of making the list if you don't have tickets.

Still waiting to see if they extend my contract here if they do I will try your suggestion, it's only 2.5 hours to Indy if I don't make gen con at least I have origins and I have a great hotel there. My preferred game will only have limited slots so I might miss out on that

Well, Event Registration went live about 50 minutes ago. I got my Wish List clicked in within the first second and have been watching the little swirly spinning since while my Wish List picks slowly click over to grey.
This would be SO irritatingly frustrating if I was primarily going to Gen Con for the gaming.
Hope everyone else is having better luck. :)
edit: Got ticket for 1 game from my list. woot, i guess?

And as a group we managed to get both our high-demand group events.

Friday's Gathering For Buffs should be cool, so peeps should set aside a few hours on Friday evening as they schedule things if they want to hang with DDO peeps.

Unless you mean old as in 'worn by a dev to a previous con' old.. in which case can we get them with their signature on them?

I just know some of the regular attendees probably already have at least some of this stuff. I do have a small number of 10th anniversary dice+bags, and even a few 10th Anniversary hoodies, although sizes tend to fall into the less-selected sizes. So, you may want to either gain or lose weight prior to August. :)

I would advise in waiting to gain or lose weight until you see which way you need to go. The hoodie's heavy enough you're not gonna want to be wearing it in August anyway. *g*

In the late Turbine/WB years, it was a corporate budget decision. This being the first year of SSG trying to get things rolling, I can see the pennies being doled out carefully. Sadly, while I agree with the spirit of your question, this year at least needs to be focused on getting the house in order.
I'm just always happy to see folks taking their personal time to show up in the years the Gathering™ has been an unofficial event. :)

Going to stick to the same place we've held it the past few years at the Severin bar, which is in the Omni Severin hotel, 40 West Jackson Place.
Time is fluid. I get there about 8 to start wrangling some space, usually managing to get the long table on the left in the picture below. But any time after that when you want to wander in is cool.
Also, I always make sure to wear one of my DDO t-shirts.

Word, I didn't realize there was a thing there either. We'll either carve out a spot or find somewhere else. If we end up somewhere else I will make sure to get that word on Twitter and Facebook (official DDO TW/FB). As per usual, and especially due to this year's Gen Con sellout, we'll need to be flexible. I intend to - try - to get there around 7-7:30, but we'll see how it goes. If all else fails we can hit up the old-old hotel bar if it's still around (can't remember the name, but it's a bit north and east of the convention center, and has always been quiet). Either way, don't worry if it's not yet eight pm and you haven't caught up with us, we'll either be there or will get the word out on Twitter and Facebook.
Heck, if things go pear-shaped and you want to attend but are not having any luck finding us, DM me on Twitter (either personal or official).
The one thing that I am - certain - of is that I have swag. One big box, and one smaller box. It's more than I can carry night-of, so I will have some with me at Gen Con. If you see me, say hello and I will get you an end reward. I've got some hoodies, t-shirts, dice and dice bags, drow minis, and some odds and ends. Also, some LOTRO stuff, since I have been pinged by some LOTRO peeps who might want to swing by for a bit as well.

Dam and I was just two hours away until I came to Vegas

The meetup is at the Social Bar next to Union Station and kitty corner from the Omni Severin. Will be here for at least a few more hours.

just as a heads up. 3 of us will be arriving around 11pm
we do not have ddo shirts. but i have a hawiian shirt. with chewbacca. lol.
It is indeed still a thing.

I am so full of rage and jealousy. One day I will be free... And I will be there!

Heyas. Just now getting home to relax. Had a second event to drive to immediately after getting home from Indy.
Enjoyed the evening, especially with the mixed DDO/LOTRO folks.
Much history was made this year. CD only had TWO drinks, AND we didn't close down the bar we were at.
