What do you have to do to get a map of an area you have explored to stay saved on return visits?

Note I am not talking about wilderness areas, as I believe they lock when you have found all the explorer points, its actual dungeon maps I have the issue with.

I have completely explored dungeons, then next time I run same dungeon two possible outcomes happen.

Scenario 1, The complete map is there with the areas becoming brighter as I get to them and the parts I haven't been to yet slightly darker.

Scenario 2, no map and I am starting from scratch all over again.

It seems random whether I keep map or lose it on different characters, but perhaps there is some specific reason?

the story in quests remain unchanged regardless of how many times you run them. the fog of war is lifted in wilderness only because you found all of the explorer points, which is considered an incentive to explore wilderness zones. there are no explorer points in quests.

The game saves the most recent maps. I can't remember exactly how many.

Ah, that explains it, the game never permenantly saves a map only remembers the last 8 (?), so if you have been playing the same 3-4 over and over it seems like map is saved, but going back to one you haven't done in a while the map is cleared again.
