What's your favorite spell and why? What makes it better than similar spells, if any?
I expect some pure mechanics to come into play, but I'd like to read about favorite fun spells too.
SLAs are technically allowed, but try to stick with actual spells.
Can't think of a favorite? What's one of the worst spells and why?
For me, I like sonic blast. It is cheap at only 4 SP, incredibly useful clear to level 10 and beyond, can damage through most barriers, has double range with aoe explosion, save doesn't reduce or avoid damage, and it is great for breaking boxes. Oh, and it occasionally stuns too.

Blade Barrier. Gather up 30 mobs, and crank up the Benny Hill theme.
Close second: Implosion.

Displacement.
I have always loved rogue/mage builds for their crazy level of defenses and tactical options in dnd, but with many scaled back this is really my bread and butter, I have surely cast it a million times at least.

Sonic Blast is the master spell.
It's awesome on a sorcerer with fast casting and short cooldown, and also awesome on a spellsinger when you can alternate between spell and SLA. It's slightly less useful on a clumsy wizard casting.
The bugs are annoying (it does not benefit from Air Savant enhancements or arcane augmentation to increase caster level and max caster level).

Favorite item spell: wild mage surge (Kormors belt is so much fun...)

Either Freedom of Movement, Magic Circle against Evil, or Dimension Door. FoM because not sliding around in a lot of cases is a literal lifesaver. Magic Circle because I hate laying down on the job from Command, and DDoor because it cuts down on so much running back sometimes. It's also good cast on chests.
All the spells that just kill stuff are less interesting to me - the game is full of ways to kill stuff.

best spell: Dimension Door
worst spell: Dimension Door
its a crux and i love/hate it.
your friend sil :)
Most often cast spell: displacement. I'm always running out of the mats for it way before any other level mats.
Combat: Earthquake. It's just so satisfying and the synergy with other dps aoe's is just neato.
Runner up non combat just plain fun spell: Disco ball (or Ottos irresistable) It's just plain fun to watch all the different monster dances while you're wailing on them. I do wish it made them helpless like stuns do, but even with that issue they're way more fun than stuns.

Favorite is probably Finger of Death.
Most used spell, though, is teleport.
Combat spell I use most is Mass Hold Monster.
Spell I want in game is Weird.

Kinda depends on the class but on a wiz life I like to cast Glitter Dust and Solid Fog. Earthquake on a Druid. Tensor's on an autobot. Haste.. so good they made a feat out of it. And last but not least Curative spells, so good they sell it in a bottle.

I enjoy casting standard buffing spell packages on everyone in my party as a wizard. My favorite combo is a standard Jump-Merfolk's-Magic Circle Against Evil-Rage-Haste-Stoneskin-Blur-Mass Protection from Elements-True Seeing-Greater Heroism, followed up with my favorite spell, Mordenkainen's Disjunction.
And yes, I have a pure 20 abjurationist for precisely this reason.

Jump is my favorite on every melee (until epics or so). Invaluable for getting over enemies/to that one mage/to that archer. Also it's fun.
Expeditious retreat until I have a Speed item. +25% zerg from Anger's Step (http://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Anger%27s_Step) makes heroics so much better.
Blur is my most favorite buff. It lasts a lot longer than Displacement, and 20% is a lot of damage mitigation.
Merfolk's is my upcoming new favorite, because I've started maxing Swim and it's hilarious.

color spray ... mobs get 3 saves against 3 different effects all in 1 spell.
imagine how far this has come from something like PK or Circle of Death where mobs get 2 saves against 1 effect.

If I had to go by the spell I probably use the most, rejuvenation cocoon. That one really changed game-play (won't get into arguing if for better or worse).
If I had to go by the one I think I've laughed at the most, I'd second the Kormor's belt for the purposes of making the Horoth Tank dance (fun times).
As far as straight up spells, I'm kind of partial to call lightning from Druid. Even though it mostly just shined as a combo SLA + Spell in heroics where things are generally easy, having the sky open up and smite my foes left and right just felt a bit more satisfying than some of the other ways to roflstomp heroics.

Everybody loves mass holds but Symbol of Stunning is my favourite.
Requires timing, good Enchant, knowledge of quest and mob spawns. And usually some zerging ahead of your murder blob.
And almost noone uses it. But that's just me, I like seeing unusual stuff put to good use.
Second would be PWS. Cheap and very effective. But very underused again.
Soooo many spells have unique graphics, unique mechanics. Unique class spells, buffs and debuffs. And so obsolete and useless. Real shame how the whole magic system has been completely dumbed down to cookie cutter Ruins and Energy bursts. And dps is the answer to everything.

This is great one because it can stun things that are usually not stunnable by the normal methods ... dazing I should say. But I love this spell too. Hopefully the fix the cool downs on these things to make them more useful and usable.

It's actually pretty useful at lower levels if you solo a squishy. It can draw aggro and hold it awhile. Is it still bugged so it doesn't actually do any damage?

It weirds me out how that spell seems to cause less pc strain than the acid rain spell, and still look so much more amazing.
In terms of the coolest looking spells I really like shadow walk conceptually, being able to see incorporeal creatures etc, it is one of those really unique kind of spells.
Outside of DDO though I really miss the simulacrum and contingency spells, gotta be my all time favourites there.

Probably my favourite and most used buff spell would be Jump. I miss it dearly when I play any character without it. It's level one, has great effect, and enables insane mobility which I consider a must in any game.
My favourite damage spell is absolutely, without a doubt, Call Lightning. With damage able to obliterate any creature in range in a single shot, this Druid spell is the best - the SLA even more so. I would also consider this spell to have the most satisfying animation and sound effect in the game, another big reason for me to like this one so much. The runner up would probably be Word of Balance and it's respective SLA - a ridiculous damage spell and it makes me feel like a god going around "judging" various creatures and having them instantly die.
Best healing spell would have to be Regenerate. A heal over time with crazy heal spikes with the important side effect of removing negative levels and ability damage, basically restoration + cure critical together cast constantly over time. Plus, it comes with a mass version for sweet team support. You can cast it once and not have to worry about healing for another 8 seconds which gives plenty of time to deal damage or focus on something else.
Although I haven't used it overly much, my favourite overall spell might be Earthquake. It's got a great animation, attainable DCs, it does damage, it does crowd control, it stacks with all other cloud spells and most importantly, it stacks with itself. I love making a pile of Earthquakes. Both for the shaking it causes and the fact that nothing is left standing - rolling damage and the falling animation happening per enemy over and over again at least every second. Simply awesome. I sometimes want to make a druid build based entirely around Earthquake and other cloud spells, it's just that good.
I just really like caster Druids I guess... their whole spell list was incredibly well done.

Despite it's low effectiveness later on, I rather like stinking cloud - it's basically a wizard running up, yelling "pull my finger!" then leaving the entire room just too busy chundering to do anything else :) If there was any other low level spell i'd want made into a rogue trap, it'd be that.

It is useful at all levels for stealth! It does do damage--just miniscule. But enough to make it unusable in stealthy repossession (a very lowbie quest ofc).

Yep. Or Sleet Storm. If you really like annoying folks, cast this near a bottomless Pit or death-cliff. The Coalescence Chamber comes to mind as a good example of a really mean place for such spells. To add insult to injury, give 4 other party members FOM and watch the 6th party member think it's personal.
Ok. No. That is just pure evil.
