View Full Version : Random 50 DR mobs

I seem to come across what look like normal mobs (about 1 in 50 or 100 or so) that just seem to have 50 or more DR (or possibly like 90 PRR) for seemingly no reason, I am sure they have regular colored names too, and the types of creature that it effects is any and all just with complete randomness, I have had it on minibosses too on occasion. So I wanted to ask are these the champion mobs, or some other bug, and/or are they intended?

Most times it is not too noticeable particularly on basic mobs, but occasionally it means death, on certain minibosses and particularly horrible mobs, but I have wondered about them for a long time and never really been sure what exactly the deal is.

Probably champions.

One of the buffs they can have is high absorption to 1 or 2 types of damage. If you have time to inspect them it will tell you which ones.

Usually when they have absorption to a damage type they will also have vulnerability to another damage type so switching weapons/spells can lead to a big increase in damage.

Does that mean their name would be a different color to normal mobs?

I figured it must have been champions, it is just that these mobs never seem to have more hp or be particularly worse than the regular mob, at least not as noticeably as what seems like a 50 or more DR boost.

Next time I see one I will do some better inspecting I guess.

No change in color to their names, but they'll have a flaming crown-type graphic over their heads, making them identifiable from a distance a decent bit of the time (unless there's bad sight-lines.)

as someone mentioned they have crowns on their heads. you notice more champions on elite then you do on hard and they tend to be more dangerous. not all of them of course. i tend not to look at them and see what buffs they have. the only time i might if i encounter one where i see yellow dps instead of regular. it tells me i'm doing something that they are resistant too. so if i have an alternate weapon/spells i tend to change, but if not i change my tactics vs those types of mobs. sure they suck to fight against but its not a common thing.

OK thanks guys, so it is just one of many potential buffs a champion mob can spawn with, nothing special. Cheers for the info, I will keep an eye out still, but I just was not sure whether this was directly connected or not.

I only really notice the DR buff (or prr whichever) as it tends to chop about 50 or more off my attacks, but even then it really only becomes noticeably more difficult on specific mobs, say a fire ele that blows up my team because I can barely crit him and am only hitting for 10 or 20 etc.

I am not complaining against it at all, but it is extremely high, that DR jump at least, are all of the other buff of similar level? It seems to be the only one I really notice.

All depends on what you have available yourself. A pale master won't be thrilled to run into a champion with permanent deathward, whereas it won't really even slow a melee down. Champs tend to spawn with increased damage, making things that already hit hard even more dangerous, and if you try to hit something that already has innate DR against physical damage (like a fire elemental) with a weapon type that it's got a champion DR buff against (say it spawned with absorb slashing and you try to cleave it in half with a great axe) you probably won't get good results though.

Keep in mind it will spawn with a weakness in addition to the absorb. AA morphic arrows is great for this. A sireth along with another staff covers all 3 types. It is worth swapping weapons to it's weakness.

The worst combo I've come up against was a skeleton with absorption for slash and pierce in a low level quest, and me with no bludgeoning weapon. lol
