While going through some of my screenshots this morning, I came across this one I took a few weeks ago.

http://i.imgur.com/zg6qQLHh.png (http://imgur.com/zg6qQLH)

I had been using the permanent level three cleric from the Starter Pack. She had gone unresponsive in one of the quests, and we really didn't think much of it. Sometimes that's just what hirelings do. But when we exited the quest and were back in the public area, she didn't unsummon. I couldn't kick her from the party or manually unsummon her. I passed the star to my guildmate and he tried. Same thing. Then when we went into the next quest, she still didn't unsummon, so I couldn't summon her again in that quest. But it really didn't matter. We didn't need her, and we were running our last quest of the night. Quest ends, we pick up our end reward, and call it a night.

Next day, we log back on to run a few more quests, and lo and behold... The hireling is still there. And she has the star. Still nothing we could do to get rid of her. We both left that party and reformed, and I was able to summon her again without incident.

This happened to me once too, it was pretty funny.

Yes, it's happened to me too.

If it starts giving orders you should really start worrying.

Thanks.

Actually when it starts complaining about HI (human intelligence) then you should REALLY start worrying.

Good one. We're overdue for hirelings that make fun of us when we play badly or die.

'Do you have any fortification at all?'
'Aggro management; it's a thing, you know.'
'Why on earth would you fight standing there?'
'You do realise I'm a crutch preventing you from becoming a better player, right?'
'Ooooh, that's gotta hurt!'
'Time to reroll!'

And the list goes on.

Thanks.

I agree, we already have a few aloof hirelings. What we need are some that mock us & then throw our 'worthless plat' plat all over our dead bodies. Or maybe have an unscrupulous hire that pilfers something of value after we perish as 'compensation for their trouble'. Lawful Evil, anyone?

That's a great idea. The comments and conversations offered by monsters and non-player characters really make the game more fun. I was just fighting the three red bosses at the end of The Jungle of Khyber and laughed when the troll exclaimed, "Fight harder you weaklings!"

The sympathetic healer:
I am sure you will do much better next time.
Did the mean monster give you a boo boo?
That looked...painful.
You should be more careful.
Who is your next of kin?

The grizzled fighter:
My grandmother hits harder than you.
Use the pointed end on the enemy next time.
Which side are you fighting for?
Walk it off.

The aloof wizard:
Really?
No amount of treasure is worth this.
I should have studied necromancy.
That was really...unwise.

I agree. The kobolds have various banter, but my favourite line in DDO is in The Black Loch: when you kill some of the Zombies, they say, "Oh no, not again".
Cracks me up every time.

Some hireling banter - in character with the hireling's advertised personality - would be awesome.
There is one thing the hireling does that amuses me - when you reach a treasure chest, sometimes they say something about "sharing the loot" or something. Always guilts me a bit....

Something like this and I would use hirelings all the time :D

I told you I spotted a trap, listen is not a dump skill

I am staying at the quest entrance until you bow back to me

your soulstone feels heavy--is that you feeling a little frustrated? Wow, I wonder what frustration feels like...

All this teleporting is making me nauseous.

I am not a street crossing light button--you can click my commands once, you know.

I hear the kobold union is broadening its racial membership. Hmmn..why did I think of that now?

Did you read ALL the options offered by the leveling trainer?

Don't worry--it happens to us all when we are level 12 and forgot to spend our 40+ AP. Oh wait, you did.

Is that a vicious weapon you are using? Sure seems like it whenever you get into combat.

My timer says my contract is almost up. If you finish the quest shortly, can you throw me a bone and make sure it ends completely?

Considering how many times I have raised you, I think a tip is in order.

I am betting that piercing weapon is not working well on all the skeletons here.

You blew up another trap box. Lovely. I hear there is a rogue hireling that would also out DPS you.

I'm gonna need a strong drink after this contract expires.

That's unusual.

Was that a commentary on the OP, or adding to the list of hireling responses to PC death? :p

Why can't it be both? ;)

Skynet is taking over.

This happens occasionally. Leaving party or switching to different character (on same server) usually fixes it.

Always guilts me a bit....

But not for long :)

>> I will /sign on to the idea of more hireling sayings... though probably not actual voices.

'I told you so'
'I thought you wanted me to wait back here'
'When you said there would be adventure, I didn't know that meant things like combat and death.'
'Make up your mind already'
'At least you pay better than my last adventurer...may his soul rest easy.'
(After mercilessly beating on an ooze) 'Do you happen to have an extra weapon available? Mine's broken.'

One if my guildmates favorite dig is "Fail Build" when someone screws up royally. It would be classic for a hireling to say something like that to us.

+1 this

Been a long time since I have seen this bug, tends to happen more often when carrying a hire thru multiple dungeons via wilderness possible past timer expiration, although its happen elsewhere.

Cure is simple, as per above, with possibly disbanding party if necessary.

PS, looking like the "need to open tab to edit posts" bug is back too.

The most funny speech in game is that snarky line "The crest goes in the socket", would love to hear such lines being spoken by hires.
And by spoken I do mean sound, not some text message.

Ahh right--In the Flesh is full of snarky insults to the party. I forgot about that.

And these comments could be made to be useful too - sometimes in the heat of battle you don't notice that effects are being applied to you (or removed). You could have the hireling make amusing/concerned/sarcastic comments about effects such as exhaustion, slow, fear, etc....
