View Full Version : General Player Poll: Which would you prefer for the 11th Anniversary?

We know this can be a tricky thing to ask, because folks might read more into it than intended, but we've been mulling over various plans for our next anniversary and have a "this doesn't mean we will 100% do it" question:
Assuming Tiefling and Aasamir arrive in a later update, would you prefer a kobold-themed anniversary with a playable kobold race, or a dragon-themed anniversary with a playable dragonborn race?

Any thing dragon. This isn't Dungeons & Kobolds.
Although to be perfectly honest, none of the 4 discusses would be a priority to me. Unless new classes are coming in conjunction to them.

Dragonborn hands down - you get to pick which stats you want, and the dragon-breath is a much more iconic and cool ability (it's in the game already, AND it already scales by character level so it's not over-powered out of the gate). Would love to play a draconic character versus a kobold (who would need to use the 4th ed. and higher rule sets to make them palatable, as 3rd edition has entirely too many weak stats).

I would prefer a dragon themed anniversary with a kobold playable race.
I think it'd be cool to play as a kobold, but I'm of the opinion that kobolds in new content is played out. Majorly played out. To the point of tedium. <<kicks the dead horse one last time, for good measure.>>

1- Less colectables needed (and much less purified eberon shards) to craft itens. Crafting became a lot of dolars intensive.
2- some form of PVP that gives xp
3- Mass reformulation of Warpriest/ MOnk/ Arti

Dragonborn.
I'd hope their racial tree would have some decent unarmed combat options (they have talons, after all), as well as some elemental affinity (sorc) options.
Can't really think of any practical uses for kobolds.

Actually. Since we're talking Dragon-themed anniversary, why not make some quests/challenges that give enough Argonessen favor to become "honored". Thereby allowing a player to unlock the Dragonborn (and/or receive special components that aid in crafting). Speaking of crafting, it would be nice if we could get some high level rune arms that let us actually craft onto them.

^What he said.^
Even though I'm not fond of kobolds or fanboy over them like people in this game tend to do, they make more sense in DDO's setting than dragonborn. Regardless of my personal opinion, kobolds are sort of the mascot of DDO. Give the people what so we can focus on more important matters: like psionics. I don't want a hardmode kobold, either, just a basic stat race, like +2 dex, +2 cha, -2 str, -2 con. Also a +50 racial bonus to jump and tumble are necessary. Heck, you could make them a paragon kobold, if you needed it to fit thematically.
I see no benefit in me playing a dragonborn unless I got a +2 charisma version that could make a sorcerer, favored soul, or warlock. I don't have much experience with dragonborn, but a quick google search and they look a bit cliche, to me. Why not just add lizardfolk or yuan-ti so we can have a +2 wisdom race, instead?

Neither.
The Kobold ship sailed a long time ago, and yet we keep getting more and more of them in a testament to tone deafness - and Dragonborn are a hackneyed acknowledgment of being out of even marginally good ideas.
If either one of these is truly the direction for the 11th anniversary, it really makes me miss the Cake all the more.

Dragonborn would be very exciting!
Hopefully the devs could have fun with it by having us select a race colour at character creation, which changes the element of the breath attack.
Agreed that unnamed bonuses would be neat - perhaps 1D<character lv/2> piercing damage, with racial enhancement to increase it.

As a premium player I am willing to spring $20 to $30 for both races because I hope they bring something unique and different to the game. However since I could only vote for one I voted for Dragonborne because I think that would be a bigger seller to non-regulars of the game.

My biggest issue with dragonborns is that they are bland and derivative. Something like "hey, let's water down half-dragons!". Kobolds are not, and are kind of DDO's thing. Heck, they are by far DnD's thing rather than dragonborns.
Of course, we could get a draconomicon anniversary giving people kobolds and putting dragonborns behind a gated favor thing, or something. That would be awesome and please everybody but the staff in Turbine that would have extra work.

Assuming Tiefling and Aasamir arrive in a later update, would you prefer a kobold-themed anniversary with a playable kobold race, or a dragon-themed anniversary with a playable dragonborn race?
Gah. I had to vote neither, because I would actually prefer a dragon themed event with a playable kobold race.
It would cool if, for example, the event was themed around your kobold finally discovering the truth about their draconic ancestry, perhaps through some shenanigens where you don't actually play as your usual character, but are converted for the quest into an equivalent level playable kobold somehow who has to do things to find out stuff and overcome problems to claim gubbins until eventually reaching... level one!*
That could be a really nice introduction to them subsequently standing proud and confident and claiming their place in the ranks of true adventurers, throwing off the shackles of that awful inferiority complex caused by the traces of doubt in their poor little hearts.
You could do the above scenario with dragonborn, but Kobolds would be better, for the juxtaposition of it all.
To be honest though, whilst I have made no secret of my utter aversion to dragonborn as a playable thing at all, if they're done they're done. I don't have to buy/play one. I haven't played gnome or half elf yet, just because they don't grab me.
All I really want when all is said and done is that when you introduce a new race - any race - please also go to town with an introductory backstory, or a quest, or something. Give them a place in the world. We don't really even have the little write ups hidden under the valenar/aerenal enhancement choices anymore to clue you into the backstory there. I've always really had a problem with the lack of context for your race and class choices in DDO. Introducing a race as part of an anniversary event gives you the chance to handle that that race's story introduction properly.
edit:
*occurs to me that if you could only unlock kobold for your account if you completed the anniversary event, and advertised the hell out of that fact, you might well draw flocks of old players back to the game for a few days. Lots of those would then hopefully stick around to at least play their kobold for a while. Some of them might stay. That way it's also part of whatever the anniversary reward system is.

I agree. I would rather see Kalashtar (and just for setting purity/fun, Changelings, both in eberron 3.5e campain setting) added to. Psionics, while it would be nice and I would love to see it, I understand the reluctance to add the entire system in when they have Arcane and Divine.

I voted for neither, because I'm not particularly interested in either race. But if I had to choose, I'd say Dragonborn/Dragon theme.
Seriously, enough of the stupid Kobold nonsense already. They were slightly amusing 5 and a half years ago with the introduction of Crystal Cove. Now they are just beyond annoying, and their constant re-use shows a serious lack of creativity. We also don't need yet another Kobold-themed Anniversary. We're already going to get the 10th Anniversary event quest again next year, and that was too Kobold-heavy as it is. Truly, I will be grateful if I don't see a single Kobold in any new content for the next year or more.
Even though I'm not interested in Dragonborn as a race, either, I'd be ok with a dragon themed Anniversary, seeing as it's called Dungeons and Dragons Online. Doing something with the Spectral Dragon from Mabar would be cool, without the lever/alter/fight.

It would be really awesome if we could get both.
Actually I agree. I'd rather have that than be risking not getting kobolds. I think that should be the last ever kobold related addition, but I after all these years I'd really like them in the game to play, in some fashion. There's always been a swell of people who've wanted it, and definitely will pay for it if need be.
Much though I dislike the race, there's also always been a swell of people who want dragonborn and will pay for that. For that matter there's always been a swell who want neither, but if we're getting tiefling and aasimar soon after/before, then hopefully within the four there has to be something for everyone somewhere.
So both would be good, I think. I still want a 'story' to go with them.

I admit that when I first saw the Dragonborn race as a standard race in the DnD 5th edition Players HandBook, I was not really impressed nor interested. But since I have come round and started to really like them as an option to choose from, so that is what I voted for.
And off course a dragon themed birthday event would be amazing - sure, kobolds are of draconic origin too, so you could just throw them in there too, but I am really not sure how you would make Kobolds a viable and interesting race to play (unless going down the route of really making them weaker as sort of a "hard core" race to play if you are bored by too easy quests).
Kobolds have been the theme (at least partially) of quite a few birhtdays already. And they are part of the Cove as well as many quests. That gets me far less excited than seeing dragons all around for the birthday event.

Kobold race but dragon party. Every kobold dreams of growing up to become a dragon after all.
Or we hates you forever!
You can make Kobolds a top tier and challenge race at the same time by doing something like, giving them like half stat points but double the past life bonuses.
Or make the Kobald race an achievement: either by favor; or some form of completionist 1x-3x, Normal, Epic, Iconic, or Racial. I'm sure the completionist would like having something special too.

I think there are some people voting for the dragon themed event over yet another kobold themed event more than they are voting for the dragonborn race over the kobold race. I would vote dragon themed over kobold themed if I didn't so desperately want kobold player race. Besides, kobold player race would work so well with a dragon themed event. Kobolds love dragons and generally serve dragons, and that would make a good event I think.
We have had a lot of kobold themed events so that doesn't excite people as much as a dragon themed event. That doesn't mean they all don't want a kobold player race if it came with a cooler, dragon themed event.

First, and altho' I generally don't like OT posts, I have to agree that addressing some of the more glaring hiccups in the game >> more content. Fix the foundation, don't just give it a new coat of paint - that will improve the game (and long-term revenue) more than anything else imo.
I also hope the Dev's read and consider these posts, and don't just glance at a "majority rules" poll (and a flawed one at that, ahem - "Dragon-themed but Kobold race"? Nope!).
That said, Dragon-themed, absolutely. We just had Kobold-themed, so... yeah, Dragon-themed event, pls!
As to which race?... Thematically, I almost don't care. On principle I don't like splat-races, but I will say that something other than Drow w/ +Cha or other than Deep Gnomes w/ +Wis might be nice.
I'm not bothered by the thought of Kobold PC's running around any more than by Halflings.
Plz make a kobold free year?
We are lvl 30 demigods more or less and i think pirates and kobolds could be given a rest being slaughtered of us some updates. :-)

"I've brought some friends along if you no want to listen to Kobolds!" Picketing Kobolds with Dragons perched at entrances to all Kobold quests, restricting access unless they show "I'm with the Union!" badge everyone gets one with birthday present.
A Kobold's story...
"Hi, I is Big Kobold, Head Foreman! This is my Story."
Quest 1 --> "11 years ago... I hatched in the sewers under the city" (defending Waterworks). "Life was rough, constantly on the run from would be adventures invading our home and trying to kill us..."
Quest 2 --> "4 years later... I ran off with some friends. I found a safer place away from the city. I learned that if we live longer, we get stronger, strong enough to defend ourselves. But, sometime being stronger just makes stronger people want to kill you. This is what happened...(defending Mired in Kobolds) "
Quest 3 --> 2 years later... How do we stop people from killing Kobolds? Maybe I can make a deal enemy? Together we can survive, I formed The Union, (Crystal Cove forming the union)
Quest 4 --> [Set in Lordsmarch Plaza and Palace] Negotiate with the Factions in Eberron to allow Kobolds as PCs. Agents of Argonnessen and the Free Agents have already sided with the Kobolds and House Deneith is against. The other House/Favor leaders will have to be convinced, (Diplomacy, Bluff, Intimidate, Favor...) or fought. Players and whatever houses they convinced fight against House Deneith and The Yugoloth, (which House D has agreed to "Pay more") should make a big fight, Battle Royal!

I still like kobolds, I really do, but even though I know nothing about dragonborn or half-dragons (our PnP DM is open minded but NOT that open minded) I would choose dragon themed event because it sounds cooler and more fun than kobold themed event and I would choose dragonborn for the something new and fresh experience. Assuming its a P2P race that means at my house it will need to be purchased at least on 3 accounts and possibly 4 if my daughter eventually gets more interested in the game.
But I still really, really want Aasimar and Tiefling. I want my cleric to be a beautiful half-celestial like my PnP character and I don't know what I'll end up doing with Tiefling but so long as I can make her look a lot like Malicia I'll figure something out. Warlock maybe if I ever get around to making one.

Dragonborn hands down - you get to pick which stats you want, and the dragon-breath is a much more iconic and cool ability
So the Munchkin Race wins of course!
Dragonborn has been asked for by a number of people and in every thread I've ever seen about it the answer has been no by a considerable distance.
Whereas there have been far far more threads about Kobolds and generally easily 60/40 perhaps even 70/30 positive reactions up until Sev let slip the Devs were actually considering Kobolds for next year when suddenly everyone is up in arms against it.
So much so that lol Dragonborn isn't just winning but annihilating Kobold in this poll - I will NOT Buy Dragonborn, I will not PLAY Dragonborn!

How about a playable Kobolt that is assisting a Dragon with a specific task? Such as finding her stolen eggs? Everyone wants to be the mighty, overpowered Dragonborn, but I want to be the humble Kobolt that saves the day! When you find yourself in the real fight, it is courage that will win, not overpowered ego. Grow a real pair and be a Kobolt!

tough question.. would love to do a kobold, but if I saw this in character selection... uh, well.. I love dragons, and this would be hard to pass by over a kobold.. and I would take it (you DO already have wings to fly on others) ~~~ BUT if they were both in character selection... I would create one of each *grin !!

That's your choice.
But here's the thing - as far as I am aware, the devs have been using 3rd Edition rule sets to govern which stats that a particular race gets (bonuses and penalties alike). Kobolds in 3rd edition were created more as a disposable enemy mob race, than a player race (for player version, refer to 4th edition and above). Because of this, they suffer steep penalties to too many stats to make them worth playing, much less pay money for (they would be fairly restricted in the classes they'd be good at). I feel the only way most folks are going to want to play a kobold is if they did something major like giving you extra AP per life (which would be readily gobbled up by anyone).
Take a look at Orien, most of your warforged these days have upgraded to Bladeforged. Why? Their innate self-healing ability. Of the races presented, I think Dragon Born offer better competition against a Blade forged because of their abilities. If we do it true to PnP, they'll have just five breath charges per rest just like the Draconic Incarnation.
http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Kobold - +2 dex is nice, and -2 con can be countered, but the -4 strength bit? No, that pretty much chucks them out the door as far as being a useful melee combatant goes unless they roll a charisma, dexterity, or intelligence to damage via swashbuckler. Or intelligence to damage through Harper Agent. However, even so, too many starting ability score points would be wasted trying to get kobold up to a point where they're not disabled by a few fatigue spells or poison. That's decidedly unheroic. Unless you use 4th edition rules, in which case, they get +2 dex and +2 con - much more palatable (and likely to be stats for an Iconic Kobold), and +2 dex with no penalty to strength might be feasible considering they're able to carry that gigantic glowing blue crystal on their backs by their lonesome (however slow they go).
Now consider Dragonborn - http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Dragonborn.
-2 dex for +2 con (or +2 charisma and your choice of con or strength if you use 4th edition rules). Either race would make a good sorcerer.

That may well be true, and I agree with the notion of "play-what-you-want". However, when making a playable race, you have to consider the money aspect as well, and there's a stronger appeal for dragonborn than kobold (in fact, you can play a Dragonborn on Neverwinter right now [and even have the option to buy the Metallic variants]). That's just my opinion, of course.

I think dragonborn should come first though.
Kobolds should be the sunset race, when things are winding up. Introducing the character race with a quest chain that would pit them against their turf war rival, the goblins bringing the players to Darguun.
Being a kobold fighting goblins would be awesome.

We know this can be a tricky thing to ask, because folks might read more into it than intended, but we've been mulling over various plans for our next anniversary and have a "this doesn't mean we will 100% do it" question:
Assuming Tiefling and Aasamir arrive in a later update, would you prefer a kobold-themed anniversary with a playable kobold race, or a dragon-themed anniversary with a playable dragonborn race?

just to counter -
kobolds are quite viable race for dex build which is not limited just for bards, kobold rogues and roguish offshoot seem like quite reasonable characters for me
heh, and dragonborn breath - if we follow rules, it should be 6d8 at lvl 30 once per encounter (sorry we re still speaking about racial ability here - no way it should equal epic destiny ability)

A quick note; a kobold themed anniversary would far more likely to have kobolds as quest givers rather than kobolds as adversaries.

To me that reads we already have our minds made up on how we want to do it, but we are going to "trick" the players into choosing what we want to do to make it seem to them like they actually have a choice.

I would rather have shfters they are iconic and you have WEREWOLVES in Eberron. The racial abilities should translate well to the clicky racial and class abilities we already have.
from http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Shifter :
"Shifters, also known as the weretouched, were an exclusive race in the Eberron campaign setting first featured in the 3.5 edition Eberron Campaign Setting in 2004 however, shifters were featured in the 4th edition's Player's Handbook 2 in 2009 ending their exclusivity to the Eberron setting. Shifters are one of the intelligent races inhabiting Eberron. With both humans and lycanthropes among their distant ancestors, shifters posses just a small portion of their forefathers' shape-shifting abilities. They cannot transform wholly into an animal but can instead shift parts of their body to become animal-like for short periods of time. In 832 YK the Church of the Silver Flame led an inquisition to wipe out all lycanthropes in Khorvaire, Shifters included. The inquisition lasted fifty years killing most lycanthropes and driving the survivors deep into the Eldeen Reaches."

I've never wanted to play a kobold, and if they make a kobold race with some sort of strong PL benefit I will frankly be really ticked off. Kobolds aren't fun for me to play. That being said, I don't care what other people want to play, and they should get fun too.
BUT...over the last year or two we have been saturated with kobolds. They were cute and funny in CC, but now they are everywhere and annoying beyond belief. So although I would have, given normal circumstances, had no problem with other people playing kobolds, I am now begging you to hold off on all things kobold for at least as long as you guys have been throwing them at us, so we can decently recover and not want to kick all kobolds from our groups just so we don't have to see them anymore.
Alternatively, allow us to kill party members.

Thanks! Please take advantage of your position on the Players council to raise the issue to Cordovan and the producers, I have tried PMs but as said by the Devs in DDOcast and videos, there are names they see that they just ignore. Much was the case when you could speak with the Devs on Lamma, They never would take any discussion about those bugs and oversights on new class or revamps.
Hopefully you can get more traction on the PC, barring that I think they will be facing growing complaints.

Wow, nice poll.
I definitely have to really ponder the choice here.
Well done making a difficult choice.
I think I will vote Dragonborn, although technically Kobolds can be reborn as dragons in their religion, which implies that dragonborn could be reincarnations of kobolds, etc...
My theory is that Kobold should be a challenge race, possibly w/o a racial tree.
If such, then the 2nd independent tree should come first, along with the possible extremely easy to add challenge classes via the NPC class route {making sure NPC classes don't count for Completionist requirements and their Past Lives are less good than the best of the normal class past lives}.
However, I will state that I prefer any new race to have an iconic version, as that offers just as much past life growth in the game as a new class.
EI: this possibly policy feeds the reincarnation crowd w/o a whole lot of resources taken away from the end game crowd.

I kind of like that idea - becoming a dragonborn only through re-incarnating from a kobold life :-) It would give a fun background of why there are suddenly appearing dragonborn too - many kobolds have been killed in the last 10 years, so now they start reincarnating.

Come on, just think about it.
Dungeon & Dragons is full of, you know, dragons.
In 3.5e there are, as you say, Draconians and half-Dragons, but also Spellscales.
Furthermore, there are plenty of dragonblooded races, like Sunscorch Hobgoblins, Deepwyrm Drow, Silverbrow Humans, Fireblood Dwarves, Forestlord Elves, Stonehunter Gnomes, Glimmerskin Halflings and Frostblood Orcs.
Last but not least, there are Dragonborn of Bahamut.
If you don't like Dragonborn and dragonblooded races, I'm ok with it and I could even agree with you, after all.
But saying Dragonborn are not a a 3.5 thing is just plainly wrong.

Any chance we could vote for the playable race and the theme of the event as two separate categories?
My completely subjective Vote: Kobolds! That would be amazing as a playable race. I'm far more excited by the prospect of Kobolds than the addition of 1/2 orcs, gnomes, Warlocks, or FVS. I have long wanted to play a kobold since my introduction to D&D in the 1980s
PROS for Kobolds:
1. Nostalgia for D&D: I remember Kobolds from the box set in Junior High. That's about as iconic of the original game as you can get. Kobolds are classic
2. Nostalgia for DDO: At the launch of DDO and our adventuring carriers - Kobolds were one of the first adversaries we faced. It would be cool to return to our roots with Kobold as a playable race. Anyone remember Kobold Island
3. Anti Power Creep: The idea of low stats/challenge mode for Kobolds is appealing to me. There should be a level 15 Iconic sorcerer Kobold as well that is more aligned with power of other Iconic options for those who don't want the challenge of a normal kobold past life.
4. Existing art assets/ easier implementation: DDO is already rich with kobold artwork and animations to speed up implementation of kobolds as a playable race.
5. Racial self loathing: Kobold on Kobold bloodshed
CONS agains Dragonborn:
1. Not pen and paper: Dragonborn was not your grand fathers D&D at least in the box set. Yes, I know this is completely subjective and you could flip this argument by pointing out war forged or the fact you couldn't play kobolds in old school D&D but for me, playing kobolds feels like classic D&D while playing Dragonborn feel like moving the game further away from its D&D roots
2. Power Creep: If we do Dragonborn, they better be awesome with draconic incarnation like abilities such as breath weapon, fly by attack and stacking natural armor. Anything less would make Dragonborn fall short and be a disappointment. In addition to the risk of power creep it detracts from the existing Epic Destiny of Draconic Incarnation
3. More difficult art implementation: I will not be happy with Dragonborn art models unless they have big wings and large tails. This would seem to be more difficult to implement. Unlike kobolds, there is no existing Dragonborn art in DDO that would be directly transferrable (I suppose you could borrow from lizard men and troglodyte models but the point still stands that kobolds art is already in the game in several variations; dragon born is not)
As an aside, we need a different setting/theme for the 11th anniversary than another kobold dungeon. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea of a kobold playable race but I want to face a different challenge/quest the crystal cove kobolds 2.0 or 10th anniversary kobold party crashers 2.0. That theme is a bit played out.
Given that the name of the game is Dungeons and Dragons a dungeon featuring a dragon would be a better nod to classic D&D but frankly - almost any anniversary theme other than undead or kobolds would be a welcome change of pace.
In the interest of developer time constraints, you could take the "Extrapljnar Palace -Dragons Hoard" challenge map, remove the kobold mining and time limit constraints, block a few corridor options to convert it into a maze and then place a dragon of a different color in each of the 3 locations where the spectral dragon can spawn.
Perhaps you could take an existing wilderness area (like the menechtarin desert) and convert it into a scaling challenge with objectives in different regions of the map that are not presently associated with explorers or rares. Or maybe do some dragon hunting in the desert

Kobold. Mostly for power creep reasons, dragonborn are just a progression from an op homebrew and kobolds are classic.
Troll-themed anniversary with playable troll race would easily win this poll.

I would like bug fixes and quality of life changes. Just a huge host of them.
Fix all the string table errors.
Fix the glitch at the end of the "The Lost Thread" where if you kill all the drow on the first wave at the same time the quest bugs out and you have to restart.
Fix all the grammatical errors we've been reporting over the years
Add a 'Dissolve all' button the crafting UI
Give crafted items a new unique color/item border (Pink!)
Fix aura's that you have to recast every time you log on
Consolidate ship buffs or give us a level 150+ special ship placement that gives you one buff with all the stuff (provided you have them all unlocked) instead of having an entire row of ugly buffs.
Add a share quest and "post lfM" button to the quest objectives UI
Since we now have a bravery marshal that lets you pause your bravery streak, why not just delete the lines of code that make your bravery streak end? Just go ahead and comment those out and save me a trip.
I'd go on, there's about a million things. But it will never happen and this will get buried.
Someone love me.
Kobold is the least distasteful if I voiced my honest opinion of dragonboring I would be banned from the Internet
Well if I hadn't already decided to quit these would do it Aasimar and teiflings are bad enough
Dragonborn are running away with it. That sucks. Dragonborn are a terrible Mary Sue munchkin race. I don't know how you could even consider this one.
Agreed
For me 5th is one huge pile of baloney I only play in one game to spend time with my friends game is way to munchkin and dragonborn or one of the biggest munchkin things ever
DDO is NOT Neverwinter!
Why are the Devs trying to make it Neverwinter with Neverwinter Tieflings, Dragonborn, Warlocks!?!
Draconians are Dragonlance only and blatantly Chaotic Evil Enemies NOT Player Characters!
Half-Dragons are a Power Gamer Race made specifically for the rarely played Council of Wyrms!
Dragonborn? *** Are Dragonborn? Dungeons & Dragons does not mean there has to be some playable race with Dragon Blood because that's not what a Dragon is!
Dragonborn are a 4th or 5th Ed. Abomination that should be kept out of DDO!

Well stated.
They aren't core they are optional rarely allowed by quality gm's munchkin baloney in 3.5 that is

this would make sense given the theme last anniversary, but some people might take offense on the light humor and laugh at yourself fun. I would farm for a troll mask just to hear players gripe to me that ladder bugs aren't fixed still and listen to them how offended they are again that devs have time to make silly events.
So complaining because they want 10 year old bugs fixed instead of wanting time spent on a silly event is bad? One would think that pride for the game being worked on would prevent a bug ever being around for 10 years.

Dragonborn
+2 Str
+2 Charisma
-2 Intel or Dex
Must be Good or Chaotic
Draconic Heritage: Fire (wall), Lightning (chain effect), Acid (cone), or Ice (Line). Poison (cone or line) and Force (Missiles--I know, but still) would be nice, and if anything, something different and inventive. I was attempting be different with each breath, but I know it should either be lines or cones.
Level One: You gain Dragonbreath based on your heritage. Once a minute/x times per rest: Damage does 1+(1d6) increasing by 1 damage per level and 1d6 every other level to initial target+plus special effect.
Fire--leaves Fire Wall
Lightning--hits targets around initial target with chain lightning for half damage
Acid--Blast near by enemies with acid
Ice-- (Tricky) Initial target gains 5 stacks of invulnerability and the floor around it becomes slick.
Poison-- Nearby enemies take 1d6 Str/dex/con damage increasing 1d6 every 6 levels.
Force--Missiles Hit nearby enemies for half damage
Equipped weapons and spells do an addition 1d6 damage based on heritage.
Draconic Defenses:
Hardened Skin per 6 levels: +3 racial bonus to PRR/MRR/Natural Armor
and based on heritage
Fire-- +5 absorption and +2 Reflex Saves
Lightning-- +5 Absorption and +2 Reflex Saves
Acid-- +5 Absorption and +2 Con Saves
Ice-- +5 Absorption and +2 will saves
Poison +5 Absorption and +2 Con Saves
Force +5 Resistance to untyped damage and +2 Will Saves
Racial Tree:
Core: 1: Draconic Linage: +5 Spell Power to Draconic Heritage, +10% Fortification
Core: 2: +1 Strength or Charisma or Wisdom
Core: 3: Draconic Linage: +10 Spell Power to Draconic Heritage, +15% Fortification, +10% Healing Amp
Core: 4: +1 Strength or Charisma or Wisdom
Core: 5: Draconic Linage: +15 Spell Power to Draconic Heritage, + 25% Fortification, +10% Healing Amp
Tier 1:
Dragonmark--Any or a new one
Draconic Toughness: +10/20/25 Health and 2/4/6 PRR
Loathing Fear: Targets struck are shaken, +2 Haggle.
Immutable Roar: -5/-10/-20 Arcane Spell Failure when wearing Medium or Heavy Armor.
Exotic Mastery: +1 to hit and damage with exotic weapons.
Tier 2
Extra Dragon Marks
Exotic Mastery: +2 to hit and damage with Exotic Weapons
Tier 3
Dragon Mark
Draconic Ancestry: SLA: Cast a shield on yourself based on your heritage that damage enemies for 1d3+15 with a small chance to cause 100 damage. Also halves incoming damage from heritage based spells. Scales with Spell Power
Draconic Power: +1/3/5 Melee Power and 5/10/15 Spell Power
Exotic Mastery: +1 to hit and damage with Exotic Weapons
Tier 4
Draconic Cleave: +2 Cleave with the at-level effects of Draconic Breathe
Draconic Rage: Action Boost: For 20 seconds you gain +8 to Strength, Charisma, and Wisdom, +20 Spell Power, +20 PRR and MRR.
Exotic Mastery: +2 to hit and damage with Exotic Weapons
Unbroken Heritage: Weapons Gain +1 Multiplier. Exotic Mastery Line Prereq
Anyway, just some ideas. Would like to see a race that has great great racials and fit that middle ground for hybrids.

I think Dragonborn would be a great addition to DDO. I wouldn't worry about them being OP because you have to remember that DDO is not PnP. If Dragonborn characters are seen as being too OP, then perhaps an ability point restriction could be put on them similarly to how Drow functions. Also, Dragonborn are not very common on Eberron, but they do exist. Since last year there were many patrons of Argonessen at the party in House P, perhaps the next anniversary event could be based around Argonessen, and bring the Dragonborn race to Stormreach.

I do not believe that Dragonborn are over-powered. At least, not nearly as much as the Bladeforged, and given Turbine's track record of even keeping the Bladeforged from being godlike, I have a feeling they will be well-balanced (I know they are in Neverwinter).

We know this can be a tricky thing to ask, because folks might read more into it than intended, but we've been mulling over various plans for our next anniversary and have a "this doesn't mean we will 100% do it" question:
Assuming Tiefling and Aasamir arrive in a later update, would you prefer a kobold-themed anniversary with a playable kobold race, or a dragon-themed anniversary with a playable dragonborn race?
http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Kobolds_(Race)
3.5 SRD says:
Kobolds
Also see the kobold creature listing.
Kobolds are short, reptilian humanoids with cowardly and sadistic tendencies.
A kobold’s scaly skin ranges from dark rusty brown to a rusty black color. It has glowing red eyes. Its tail is nonprehensile. Kobolds wear ragged clothing, favoring red and orange. A kobold is 2 to 2-1/2 feet tall and weighs 35 to 45 pounds.
+2 Dexterity, –4 Strength, –2 Constitution.
Humanoid (Reptilian).
Small size: +1 bonus to Armor Class, +1 bonus on attack rolls, +4 bonus on Hide checks, –4 penalty on grapple checks, lifting and carrying limits 3/4 of those of Medium characters.
A kobold’s base land speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
+1 natural armor bonus.
Light Sensitivity (Ex): Kobolds are dazzled in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell.
+2 racial bonus on Craft (trapmaking), Profession (miner), and Search checks.
Automatic Language: Draconic. Bonus Languages: Common, Undercommon.
Favored Class: Sorcerer.
Level Adjustment: +0.
Which isn't horrible off the bat. The land speed is half again the land speed of a halfling or gnome, so a DDO kobold should have a straight up bonus to run speed.
Racials should have natural armor bonuses, the trapmaking feat, and bonuses to Search skill.
Hmmm...
Tier 4 racials--compared to the rest--might include a lightning bolt SLA, maybe a racial evasion...
If you give kobolds a racial evasion, a plain old speed boost of 25-50%, and no penalty to Intelligence and Charisma, you'll have a hell of a base for a caster and might see some builds that now splash rogue or monk for evasion go pure.
Throw a breath weapon SLA or lightning bolt SLA as a choice maybe and bonus spell level bonuses to a dragon-related element of choice that stacks with epic destiny and sorcerer savant levels.
Some dodge bonus, bonus to search and trapper skills too.
What you have is a premier race for sorcerer, warlock, artificer, and rogue.
You're not going to have kobold barbarians, but a solid seller for some of the popular non-STR based classes.
If you want an iconic, Paragon Kobold with DR, more size, less speed bonus, no CON pen, half the STR pen, maybe a draconic-color based guard in lieu of spell bonuses...

Look up Draconians in Dragonlance, Dragonborn are the nicer PC (Player Character or Politically Correct, your choice) version of them I believe.
There are other places they show ups as well.
Personally though I would prefer a Shifter, Changeling or Kalashtiir PC Race. These would suit the roots of the game in Eberron and thus be fitting for an anniversary.
Shifter shouldn't be too hard even and should be good for melee monks done right.
Changeling is a bit tricky, most of their stuff benefits disguises if memory serves, could work for Rogues though if they get some cheeky stuff to avoid aggro, and to loose aggro.
Kalashtiir is the least probable since they're an inherently Psionic race and unless Psionic Classes are on the horizon, I wouldn't expect them, would be great to fit in with the Dreaming Dark and Quori though. I'd love if the Next Expansion included Soulknives, Psions, Kalashtiir and took us to Sarlona.

Dragonlance has zero to do with ddo
Then I shall refer you to: http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Dragonborn
The dragonborn come from Argonnessen (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Argonnessen), the continent of the dragons (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Dragons). While the beaches of Argonnessen are populated by the tribes of the Seren (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Seren), within the jungles of the continent's interior lie the great city-states of the dragonborn. The dragonborn rarely leave Argonnessen, with the exception of a large colony of dragonborn that founded a settlement in the land now known as Q'barra (http://eberron.wikia.com/wiki/Q%27barra)

As for Dragonlance, about as much as Forgotten realms did before the portal opened, so there could be portals to Dragonlance opening as well.
However, I was trying to concede the point that Dragonlance had little to do with DDO (sorry that wasn't clear), and instead providing a better reference to to what Dragonborn had to do with DDO (in reference to the previous post I quoted).
It should be noted that Dragonborn were in 3.5 as well, see Races of the Dragon, Chapter 1, Pg 5-20. They just became more prominent in 4e (which I never touched, and thus my knowledge of Dragonborn comes from 3.5).
Also of note: Dragonborn in Eberron Sidebar pg 20 same book.
The Book also includes a Chapter on each of the following: Spellscales, Kobolds, Dragon Descended (aka Half Dragons).
Regardless of all of the above, I would still prefer Shifters, Changelings or Kalashtiir.

I had to look up this Races of the Dragon optional supplement source book, since i could not find any reference to the Dragonborn in any of my 3.5 Eberron books (the Eberron Campaing Setting, the Races of Eberron, the Dragonmarked, Magic of Eberron...).
So after reading about this Dragonborn of Bahamut race / template / whatever... the following question comes to my mind:
Why is the Dragonborn even an option for the 11th Anniversary event?
All we have is a side-note on page 20 of an optional supplement book - with some rule changes to fit the setting.
When it comes to DDO - to my knowledge - the Dragonborn was never mentioned in game, there is no lore to support it, no content based on it.
And yet for some reason it is a good idea to focus a whole anniversary update around it? Why?
Even adding the Kobold as a playable race would make more sense then adding the Dragonborn - and i am saying this after voting Neither.
To close my argument:
- Instead of adding new races why not focus the anniversary around game-play improvements (revamp some old game mechanics - better combat; more spells that remain relevant at end game; revision of old spells; new mechanics... etc).
- Or if a new race must be added, then i would like to join the notion to support Shifters, Changelings or Kalashtar instead of the Dragonboring or Kobolds.

Agree to this, and we have Kobolds all over the place, yet again with Crystal cove. But when we ever get Kobolds as a playable race, can we have them then automatically mumble stuff like 'I still hate you' when other players are around?
You secretly laugh at the kobold VO. Admit it!

Personally I would like to see both.
As a matter of hearing that Kobolds will be the next race to come out as a running joke and then hearing that you guys may actually make Kobolds playable is actually, really, really sweet. That said, many other people have already posted, kobolds are super weak and may need material pulled from the Draconomicon and Races of the Dragon books (and yes kobolds that take dragonwrought are actually dragons!). What I would want to see through this balancing of fodder is you, the devs, to expound on the backgrounds of the WHY and HOW the race of dragonwroughts came to be or other PC played Kobold race as well as pulling from the fore mentioned books to develop a deeper richer campaign into the dragon backstory and shedding some light on the elusive Agents of Argonnessen and the dragons from Argonnessen and their organizations.
On the flip side Dragonborns are a 4th edition only race *shudder*, I don't like 4th ed at all as I felt it pandered to simple gaming and hit everything with a nerf bat really hard. However, Dragonborns were the answer to the players wanting to play balanced half-dragons and if they can be brought to 3.5 I expect them to be really cool and blow all the other races out of the water. It would be inspiring to see how you, the Devs, handle it as the sorcerer cannon from 3.5 states that sorcerers pull their powers from their heritage, with dragonborns clearly representing that statement. Dragonborns are also very physically suited, so it would be interesting to see how the fit into a fighter or barbarian role. Other than what they bring to the table stat wise I can't really think of where they fit into the Eberron world as they are from 4.0 completely. This lack of lore could allow you to color outside the lines so to speak and allow you to shape how and where they came from with ease.
Either one that's chosen I hope it's fleshed out in both stats and story as to why it's there and what makes the player unique in the world of Eberron and bring their own or just more narrative to this small city of Stormreach.

As much as I love DDO's kobolds (seriously, your take on the kobold is all sorts of awesome imo), I would much rather play as a dragonborn and explore a dragon-themed event. Kobolds are already prevalent, and making them even more so would wear out some of their charm (imo of course).

Because I do not come from the classic pen & paper era, and for sure I will really get hardcore players upset at me. But let's do something fun with the Kobold!
Give them a Tier 4 or 5 racial tree clicky like "Summon the Horde" or "From the Cracks" and a horde of kobolds rush around the player creating slow and confusion for mobs. Also, when clicked 1-2 secs after death, the player's soul gets transferred to one of the kobolds from the horde, like a free resurrection! Nothing gets more annoying than a kobolds that j.u.s.t.w.o.n.t.d.i.e!!
Maybe they can start iconic and be born from the wilderness or some lava pits of the Ruins of Gianthold? there are a few locs like West of East of the Ruins that are under-populated.
And slightly off topic, what about making the different races more fun to play with especially upgrading their racial trees. I would love to see more Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings than Humans, so maybe we can get some diversity in DDO :)

All those hours wasted waiting for an lfm to fill. Why not introduce an activity that players can partake in while waiting for the party to fill. My suggestion would be the ability to play games between players in the forming group where they can bet plat, gold, silver, copper pieces. Games might include:
Dice (craps)
Poker
A running total of amounts won/lost could be kept (and displayed in player stats).
What do you think?

I have been away for a long time now.
One major reason I left was that I felt the direction for races was unappealing. The other was that I felt the Tiamat story-arc was abandoned prematurely.
Introducing Dragonborn/Half-Dragons into the game would give me a compelling reason to return to the game.
Personally, I would rather see Half-Dragons than Dragonborn. Perhaps not "true" Half-Dragons, but something like a Dragon-Blooded race. I even had a concept for it long ago:
https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/445298-Fully-Fleshed-out-Iconic-Dragon-Blooded-Concept-hope-you-and-the-Devs-like-it!!!
I think I have a further modified version of this in .docx form somewhere if there is interest.

Well, I don't think dragonborns is a good option either, so "Neither".
PS. Overall, I'd rather like devlopers stop spending time creating new races and switch to the new classes instead. Races are hard to create, because they demand someone to do all the 3D-modelling stuff, but they don't bring as much replayability as a new classes do. ^_^
And with Gnomes & Deep Gnomes in the game already, Kobolds/Dragonborns for the anniversary, and possibly Aasimar & Tiefling, that'll be 5 new races in a row. The game can benefit from more new content variety than this. :-)

So ... I say that already a while that I do not play DDO, more than anything else I am missing several packs and the latest expansion to be able to play the full game, but I always enough Following the forum and ideas of the players itself. ..sapevo that Asimar and Theafling would come to a future update by reading the notes of the manufacturer, but outside of the letter I have always heard of people who wanted comboldi as a playable race ... ok I do not know if 3.5 Ded c 'was a manual where the goblins are inserted as a playable race but i know that in games like Neverwinter Night's 1 and 2 there is a kobold bard named Dekin that in the first NW and also a companion recruitable... leaving this my memory from my point of view it seems to me a little more "appropriate" be included as a playable race the Dragonide and saw that one of the quite famous playable races in Ded for various reasons, the first may be valid paladins and FavoredSoul of being fierce warriors, he has various features racial valid, then why could have several fun features like breathe fire (which can be a racial skill).
So I prefer to be inserted dragonide that cobold... the kobold see it more as a monster a servant evil rather than a hero, while the dragonide and much better from this point of view, it would be much better.
And then in my opinion because the turbines would have a lot of very valuable information in order to bring out the dragonide as a playable race, just look these pictures:

as you can see (and fore could possibly be the only problem for the turbines to design the dragonide model) are the parts of the feet and head.
But even these images you could also make a idea of what could be much more appropriate to have a dragonide breed a race of cobolds.
In addition here is the description of the breed in the player's manual 3.5 on Dragonborns:
The Dragonborn have a racial bonus to Strength and Charisma (then, so the fly, should be the delicious paladins or clerics and leaders). They have speed, size and normal vision, like many other breeds; have a bonus to the Intimidate skill and History (which boh, history ... I would put Tenacity anyway ...). Let the "skill characteristics" of this race: to begin with, being humanoid dragons get immediately the power to Firebreathing meeting (which you can also choose attribute and reference feature, choose well!) That in addition to a beautiful effect of "Hey look, I spit acid / ice / lightning / fire / poison", proves to be a great power in case you find yourself in front of a large group of enemies. Moreover, thanks to Legacy Draconic, the value of the healing impulses of a Dragonide is equal to 1/4 of the maximum hit points + your Constitution modifier (for all other races is just 1/4 of the maximum hit points) which is fantastic seen I would see it unlikely that a Dragonide to use chopsticks and sticks from the rear as it can go and wiped out the enemies in the front row brandishing a broadsword three kilometers long. Last but not least, thanks to Furia Dragonide, the few times you'll be bleeding (ie when your hit points fall below half of the maximum hit points) will get a +1 bonus to attack rolls.
From this we can deduce that they can become as I said great paladins and thieves FavoredSoul but also valid and perhaps even warriors and clerics.
For this reason they are more inclined to see the dragonborns as a playable race, not only for the Lore and the possibility of class combinations that can have the most ... but why also see it as a kind of icon, symbol Dangeons And Dragon being close relatives (so to speak) of the dragons.

I do not know if you're sarcastic or you are a troll of the worst kind, because Theafling, Aasimar Dragonborn and should not exist? things are 2, I do not know anything about Ded to say these things like that, you're usually Kid player playing just and do not care for anything of value, and still is now the choice and made Dragonborn will be the new breed playable and I'm very happy, we only hope that the make out aesthetically fine ... but if you are inspired to type these images there maybe a possibility.
As for Aasimar and Theafling you said a huge error these two races exist in Ded a little less Aasimar in later versions (Ded4 and Ded5) but still exist as the Dragonborn.

i presume u know what optional supplement means? Yeah, thats that sort of rulebook in which Races of Dragon belong. Other than that Dragonborn have no place in 3.5Ed. While Aasimar and Tieflings are not usual tho pretty legal monstrous player races in 3.5Ed as well as kobolds (ogres, minotaurs, halfogres, orcs...etc etc ...tho no dragonborn).

3.5 in the Dragonborns are there but are called by another name "progeny Bahamut" the dragonborn as they know it all are the evolution of the same ancestors but more humanoid form as you can see in the pictures that the dragon. If you know what you should then have read the manual of the 3.5 "Races of the Dragon".

A munchkin optional book
U cant say that:) those books are awesome source if used at DM discretions and if u have campaign suited to its use, which i s not our case ofc. Tho it s not fault of the books.
Its kinda similar to paldin cause. Paladins power s are outweight in PnP by quite strict CoC - in DDO it reflects in no other way than that u cant multiclass with certain classes.

No I can say that I read through them and they are horrible I didn't even like the flavor in races of the dragon so I banned it and all splat books when I ran 3.5 not one was worth the paper it was printed on IMO and yeah Paladins are better suited for PnP

I would agree with others on here, I would prefer a dragon-themed anniversary with a playable kobold race.
I mean, kobolds claim to be descended from dragons, too, right? Just listen to Arboth on Ataraxia's Haven.

i presume u know what optional supplement means? Yeah, thats that sort of rulebook in which Races of Dragon belong. Other than that Dragonborn have no place in 3.5Ed. While Aasimar and Tieflings are not usual tho pretty legal monstrous player races in 3.5Ed as well as kobolds (ogres, minotaurs, halfogres, orcs...etc etc ...tho no dragonborn).
And to more disappoint u - the Game was not called Dungeons and Dragons because players were supposed to play as dragons (nor Dungeons)
I admit that I do not know all the books of 3.5, but when I plan to try to figure out something to try, and among the information that there are on the internet I saw that the Dragonborn are located in 3.5 in qusesto manual of dragons, but as I have explained another name.
btw, Dragonborns are seen like this in Neverwinter - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9VedEyYUZY
just I'm worried if Turbine will make them as highly human-based like Mystique in X-man https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/2c/23/da/2c23daf7c151c36652c8af9430061bbc.jpg
hope They will look so badass.
No I do not think the turbines will use a basic model from human partly because the Dragonborns are closer to a massive build and more muscular than normal, what might be difficult in the design (but I also explained in my post) are the feet and head , unlike the other races the dragonborn are reptiles almost like goblins, so the body has to be all about scales, and there should be no hair or other stuff in character creation dragonide but more various types of scales can be selected in the creation in my opinion .
To help you better understand how in theory should be the models (to speak) of the dragonborn I put this that makes them see very clearly as they should be.
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/2e/dd/c6/2eddc67b54f601b862d810ec9a7ee798.jpg
It is clear that in itself The turbin can not be used as the basic model of the human, the body of the male dragonborn and very massive and is very close to that of the half-orc and purpledragon Knight,
then being of the reptiles have the body covered with scales so in character creation there should be options like color scales, type of scales, shape head and crest.
But another problem I think is on their helmets and boots ... in a way on how they could come out and this...

This and Neverwinter models but you can clearly see how the helmet for dragonidi and different from that of a normal modello.Per As for the armor model might look like at that odei Warforged with cut means boots that they see only the feet.

I still say we need to be able to play as trolls in a troll themed event (even if it's the devs trolling us).

I know devs have not that big power of development for making them so detailed, then I'd prefer not to see dragonborn cause I don't want to be disappointed from low-quality dragonborn. guess a lot of people agreed. human-faced dragonborn? no, dragonscaled human.
plus, I believe human-based body does not also make themselves showing their heavy charisma. to compare something in real, if Komodo dragon were so skiny, men of the old times would not put the word dragon on their name. the name of dragonborn should say their charisma enough. if not able, seeing kobold will be better.

People and secured with coblod because they are almost all in Ebberon NPC or mobs in instances! but it is absolutely false! apart from Dekin of Neverwinter Night's I have never heard of coblod adventurers! are all servants of the dragons!
As I hear these stupid things I think that people are just stupid or simply prefer that the turbines do stupid things like a cobolda race, I say... People wake up and Have read a Ded manual? or you still tried to look around? I think so not right if people continue to insist on the "We want to race kobold We We We!" on because they know nothing about the breeds of Ded.
Let's have never played a RPG of Ded as Baldurs Gate or Ice Windale? there were cobold playable races? no, absolutely no!...so stop with is the history of "we want the kobolds because I am here and the".
Then for qunto regards the Dragonborn model as I have explained is not possible that you can rely on the model of the human, and this demonstrates that havete not read well my analysis.
I repeat ... the model for my comes closer and that because of the half-orc, and bigger and taller, the Dragonborn fact are much higher than a normal human, the difficulty then is to design the head and feet, and draw the helmets and armor so that does not seem strange.

I think we misunderstood each other. I totally agreed that your model desired. I just meant I'd rather to see kobold instead seeing weird dragonborn that looked as mystique of xman, a scaled human. At least We know how kobold looked as, but we've never seen any dragonborn yet in DDO. There is a chance to come out a worst dragonborn model I am worred of. So, yes, I hope heavy appearance like half-orc, but possibly more heavy.

Any thing dragon. This isn't Dungeons & Kobolds.
Although to be perfectly honest, none of the 4 discusses would be a priority to me. Unless new classes are coming in conjunction to them.
Get your facts straight. Kobolds are a dragon race.
Get your facts straight. Kobolds are a dragon race.
That's one line of thought and it isn't the original line of thought on kobolds.

If kobolds are dragons and dragonborn are dragons, why not introduce kobold-dragon-born and make everyone equally baffled?
Also, if kobold-dragon-born are introduced, will they get stuck under the platform at Crystal Cove?

Dragons are the best.

Dragons and Dragonborn.
I don't know what it is, but I will Google it. It gets my vote because it sounds cool, and kobolds are way overused already. I can already see players making kobold characters and filling the bio page with more stupid kobold quotes (yes yes I know kobold still hates us).

Too late to vote.
Not sure why we need another cone shaped aoe-spewing archetype in DDO, but I also think kobolds should remain a non player race. I would have voted for dragonborn simply to vote against kobolds.
