So I recently started playing DDO through steam and 2 things should be noted, first you have to have a steam account to buy TP from the turbine store and second if you verify the integrity of the game cache it reinstalls the whole game. The second one is meant to get rid of bugs and in newer games it will only reinstall the bad files but with DDO it reinstalls the whole game. Not really a big deal since my internet is good but I can't stay other people will be thrilled about waiting an hour to play their game.

I've played through Steam, and didn't see any reason to continue. What is the upside?

I installed it through steam, but then found the shortcut in the steam folder and pinned that to my desktop. Now I do not have to be logged into Steam and have experienced none of the problems you mentioned.

I have installed and play through Steam. I appreciate the information about using the launcher from the Steam folder since I can never remember my Steam password.
Tried playing via steam and it increases my lag 10 fold so I don't any more

You can pay everything through Steam and not have yet another company out there with your CC/Paypal, whatever info. It minimizes your risk for being hacked. Also, if Steam gets hacked you're going to hear about it, whereas with individual companies you might not.
In terms of installs it's a simpler process to port your client between PC's if you have multiple machines you play on. One source online for game installs instead of having to keep CD's or find and download the install exe on each machine you use.
Downsides include some companies not giving you credit for online currency purchases made via Steam instead of via their store. You get the in-game currency in your account but you do not get the benefits (discounts, special offers) that some companies give players who purchase currency directly from their website or store. I don't believe that Turbine and DDO are in this category but some other prominent F2P/Premium companies are.

When you build a new PC, Steam is amazing. All my games in one place.

My systems a couple years old now, but still fairly good... I also love steam and play ddo through it.... no noticeable difference in lag, I hardly ever get it to begin with....
Also steam has some pretty incredible sales sometimes ;)
DDO actually plays pretty well with Steam; if you decide to stop using Steam, it doesn't have any hitches with transitioning from the install, and you can run it without the Steam client from the folder without any significant issues.

This is true. Also steam allows me to keep a backup of installs on a local server with little muss or fuss. if I want to run on different hardware, I can copy that backup to a new machine and run the steam installer.
However I don't currently run DDO through steam. No particular reason for that though.

Oh you don't understand what you're seeing, that's OK. We are here to hjalp new people.
It is super difficult, Uska, we know, trying to figure out what is causing lag on Steam. Oh well, hope you can help us.

One of the biggest reasons I like to run it through Steam is the in game browser. It makes looking things up on the wiki super easy while playing. I also love being able to keep track of my playtime (almost to 5000 hours lol) and the built in chat is really useful. Often use Steam chat to check if one of my friends is coming back after a dc or not.

I don't even want to know how many hours, it would make me move on.
I'd rather help people understand why they think someone a Steam interface is lagging them.
Uska gets lag because (a) his Steam games are set to auto-download.
And Uska is a ****** and I wish him luck.
I have room for violations.

got to post to support steam.
I am not sure why you would not use steam to pass through to DDO. I have never had any technical issues using stream to get into DDO. I like that I can use my steam wallet to pay things from DDO store. Its also my social platform where all my friends are... I can post screencaps to my social media feed in steam. It also houses all my games...

That is a sick awesome metaphor for the Steam DDO forum. I rarely check in and the low population makes it pretty clean.
Oh. Bump.
