View Full Version : Stacking Rules Involving Augments

I just discovered that the Sapphire of Defense +10 (I just slotted one on a ring) does not stack with a "Sheltering" item.
Is this working as intended?
There is no information about how augments stack on the DDOWiki rules page. I'm a new(ish) player so maybe I missed something.

Defence and Sheltering are both Enhancement bonuses hence they do not stack and you only get the higher of the two bonuses. Effects with different bonus types do stack such as Insightful, Profane, Exceptional, Quality, Mythic etc.

As a rule of thumb I use augments simply to fill gaps in my equipment that I cannot cover with gear, because as far as I know it's always the basic same bonus type (enhancement) on augments. Named gear sometimes provides other bonus types, and the recent random loot provides quite a few Insight boni...
Also keep in mind that augments usually have a lower bonus at the same level, so in general it's smarter to use gear for the vital things, and to.. well.. augment that gear with additional properties that are 'nice to have, but not an essential' via augments.

Yep. All of that is why I don't bother with Augments except for straight up extra damage and 'specials' like deathblock, featherfalling or those lovely rubies with the AOE effect on them. Never looted one of those though, so no idea where they come from.
I find the gulf between an augment's ML and what drops on loot of the same variety is so vast that things like spellpower generally have no effect because I've got potency somewhere, and attributes bonuses are meaningless in todays DDO. There are no builds where you only 'kinda' need a stat. You either need it, in which case having a bonus of nearly half the value of equivalent lootgen is rather pointless, or you can dump it unless it has a direct correlation to saves (e.g. Wis) in which case maybe, if and only if the augment drops in my lap and I happen to have an item with that slot free. Otherwise I just put them on the AH. They often sell too, so someone is out there buying them.
All then made worse by not being able to remove them without getting lucky in the daily dice roll or paying TP. That just means that even when I have a useful augment I don't tend to slot it - otherwise I end up wearing ML9 stuff at ML21 because what I really want is that specific effect (e.g. deathblock) and I cant' find an item to replace it with that wouldn't cause a complete refit of everything. I hate that.
I'm not saying they should be made more powerful base values... but it would certainly be nice if there was an 'augmentation bonus' or something so that they would stack with everything except other augments.
To be honest, things could stay exactly as they are and I'd be happy... if there was just a reliable source of jewellers's kits, so I could feel more free to actually slot the things that are useful as soon as I get them instead of never getting around to it, and would maybe be less loathe to just trash/AH the attribute, resistance, and spellpower augments.
A jeweller NPC maybe that could unslot augments for you would be nice. They could charge shards, serious amounts of plat (suggest 100K per ML because for many players that would require serious work to get when they're starting out), or require you to turn in another augment of the same ML value or higher.

I've looted 2 of them in the Firedragon raid so far... cannot remember if it was a ruby eye or meteoric star, tbh... been a while since i've had the pleasure.

Gasp - loot from a raid that is useful and might just drop without endlessly grinding for RNG ingredients? OMG, wish I'd known that.
I guess I'll have to pay some attention to thunderdome or whatever its called (been in there the week it released, got very bored with endless hallways and samey mobs, haven't been back. So I've not played either raid. Then I played TOEE and realised thunder-wossname was just a trial run... :) )

Not fond of Thunderholme my self. it's one wilderness I dislike, because it's sooooo many skellies. granted, it's amazing that the dwarf skellies still look pudgy. However, you do not need to do much of the wilderness to do the raid. find someone who knows his way and flags you, takes maybe 10 minutes for both raids. then you can directly teleport to the raid entrances using the red haired dwarf at the entrance afterwards. and you need to flag only once per life.
(and sorry for going off topic!)

With one exception: Spell School DC yellows give a special augment bonus to DC, so they stack. (Originally they didn't stack, which made them utterly useless, so feather was convinced to make them a special stacking type just before he left.)
