View Full Version : It's (war)hammah time!

So, I've been contemplating making a pure fighter TWF warhammer build, recently. Well, actually, I've been contemplating it for years, I just never got around to it. Warhammers have been down in the dumps for a while, but I think a dwarf (just cuz..dwarf) with two warhammers in kensei (splashed with SD for the stance, of course) could get some pretty nasty tactics going with stunning blow and knockdowns. Sort of a hefty little stunbot. I've got several good warhammers stocked up, including 2 duergar warhammers for early epics and a plethora of hand-me-down armors and tactical stuff. I'll probably need to farm some of the newer hammers, but I can do that without much fuss. I figure being in Legendary Dreadnought destiny with the pulverize enhancement and tactics bonuses would be nice, too.
Sooo, dorf warhammah fun timez or just not worth it?

I think you will have a lot of fun with this...
I like it when people think beyond spreadsheet math. The nice thing is there are a large amount of named war hammers out there starting from level 16 on.
Enjoy

I love playing flavor builds. In fact, I find it more fun than anything else because it's different: I made a bear druid not too long ago, sure it was weak, but a lot of fun to play. I stay far, far away from clone builds and FoTM.
Yeah I have some nice low level warhammers, plenty of adamantine to make 2 nightforge warhammers for lvl 8. I have a couple hammer of leaden clouds somewhere, too, from tor. All I really need to farm is the earthshatterer from lord of stone, which my warlock is getting ready to do as I type this. Once I decide to stay in epics, it's not hard to make 2 TF hammers.

Well, I farmed out 2 earthshatter hammers, and made 2 nightforge, so heroic weapons are all set to go. I'm all ready to TR tomorrow.
I'm wondering about cleave/great cleave: are they worth it on a twf build, which is based more on dps/offhand strikes than aoe damage? I could have other fighter-related feats in those slots.

That does sound like a fun build, I might have to try that out.
Played a twf dwarf for a long time in PnP.

aoe is aoe. what else is there to use? cleaves are underrated on twf and somewhat overrated on thf, and i really dont understand the people who say you should just not even take cleaves. just because you have cleave on any build doesnt mean you should use it on cd in every circumstance (thf noobs) and just because you are twf doesnt mean you should never take or use cleave, but you still shouldnt use it on cd in all circumstances. its a matter of if you are surrounded by enough things that hitting cleave would be more dps than a couple more basic attacks against a single enemy, you use it, and if not, you dont. cleave at least is a requirement for lay waste which is a good thing to have. what other feats could you possibly take that you couldnt otherwise afford that give you anywhere close to the value of cleaves anyway?

cleaves are underrated
Regular cleave is underpowered IMO. Exalted Cleave etc... is good But I don't care for reg cleave...
I always use Whirlwind on my twf's when the build allows it.
With the +4[w] dmg, what is there not to like?
Is it worth having dodge, mobility, combat expertise, & spring attack to get it?
Everybody has a different opinion & play style, so.......

I only had 2 spare feats, and not enough int for that until later in heroics. Besides of which, I only ever use WW on monks due to the bugs in it.

You mean apart from the high feat cost, slow animation, and only unarmed monks (or wolf / tree builds) getting two hits from the double-spin? Nothing, I guess.

Don't gnomes get a nice boost to hammers? Or is that just light hammers?

Warhammers are racial weapons, but the gnome bonuses only apply to lt hammers & maces, unfortunately.

Yes, gnomes only get bonuses to light weapons, but get automatic proficiency with warhammers. Dwarves, in my opinion, would be a better fit for a warhammer build due to having attack/damage bonuses with them as well as have a +3 bonus to tactics DC's in the racial tree.

Y only unarmed monks (or wolf / tree builds) getting two hits from the double-spin?
Um, all of my tempests w/ WW get 2 swings. And the animation isn't as bad as a lot of other 360' type attacks.
Now, Referring back to the context of the build in question. .......
A Dwarf TWF Stunning hammer tree-trunk of a build, only needs a basic 360' attack, as the main purpose (IMO) is to use a perfectly timed cleave while charging a mob. Quick stun on as many as possible,
after that, a potent combo of high DC's and damage mods is all it would take for a basic build to be a LOT OF FUN playing.
In fact, I have my original toon, still 1st life, lvl 12, that was rolled up in Jan 07', that Im going to dust off the cobwebs, and build one.

the quoted segment of my previous reply is comically out of context. but anyway...
its not about the extra [w], its about the instant aoe proc. the difference of 2[w] makes one ability underpowered and one "good" in the context of weapon base damage profiles being over most cleaves and even with the strongest, and first number damage honestly coming more from flat base damage increases and melee power and seeker? 2[w] is really all the difference between underpowered and not? i find that questionable.
if twf is providing a second damage proc, not just a second swing animation, i would like to see that.
