View Full Version : Pure TWF Build advice wanted

Hi! I am a returning player and would like some build advice for my lvl 20 dwarf fighter. I am heavily invested in Dwarven War axes since his inception, pre U1, and would like any advice given to stay within the confines of being a Dwarf. I would also humbly ask what kinds of twists and such I should take. The primary focus of the fighter is DPS, with a little tactics (Stunning Blow) tossed in. If I were asked to make a choice between the tactical side and adding more survive-ability with more hp or PRR/MRR, I would choose the latter over the former. Also, if needing to know why the cha tome is due to my personal choice of taking intimidate. I realize I may not be the top choice for tanking a boss, but I wanted it to better assist my team/group in overall content. Anyways thank you for your time!

dwarf con to dmg isnt rly optimal on tactics build
no stalwart stance is needless lack of defense

below build, run to lvl12 with greataxe, then switch to dual (due to maxing INT as much as possible, TWF feats come a bit late)
gear STR, CON, INT for Know the Angles Harper

Cleave is optional to get Momentum Swing/Lay Waste, not everybody likes having it on a TWF and on a Dire Charge tactics build may be overkill.

alternatively, pick Combat Expertise over Cleave to unlock Legendary Dreadnaught Improved Combat Expertise for total of 10%AC 20PRR added defense mode

this is aimed at tactics, dps, defense - the weakness of pure fighter is saves and lack of self heals - compensating for heals needs twists/good destiny/gear/epic past life stances like fast healing

if you need to pick some of those up yet after your return to the game, as mentioned below, maybe do a fighter + saves/heals splash first to get some epic destiny and PL options before going for pure fleshy fighter ...

build needs past life SP, high SP item, ideally SP regen item clickies to be able to sustain KTA and cocoon heals (- in longer high difficulty raids - quests should be mostly no issue as pure fighter twf usually kills stuff fast, still the occasional rare SP pot may be needed...). potentially drop tier4 stalwart +6 str stance for +100 SP harper if needed, but id rather keep in STR and try make do.

if sustainability of self heals is a problem, running in Crusader for the added consecration self heal is also worth a thought. likewise, twisting in consecration tier2 + sacred ground tier3 would add those heals to LD

scrolls should sorta work at cap if im not mistaken: 11 ranks umd, +10 epic skills, +1 arti PL, + (13cha +8 augment +2 insight augment +1 globe)= CHA mod 12, +5umd skill named item = 39 at cap with gear for no fail heal scroll ands some 70%+ on rez scroll and 100% on lesser raise scrolls with 35 alrdy ...

destiny layout with combat expertise and twisted consecration:

Destiny (24 AP)

Legendary Dreadnought
Legendary Tactics III, Extra Action Boost I, Strength
Imp. Combat Expertise, Damage Boost III
Critical Damage III
Anvil of Thunder
Advancing Blows, Devastating Critical
Master's Blitz, Headman's Chop

Twists of Fate (35 fate points)
Sense Weakness (Tier 4 Fury)
Sacred Ground (Tier 3 Crusader)
Consecration (Tier 2 Crusader)
Rejuvenation Cocoon (Tier 1 Primal)
Fast Healing (Tier 1 Fury)

as for twist in general, sense weakness is kind of a must on a tactics build as the added 30% on helpless is a huge help to dps. other than that, a pure fleshy fighter prly would want any possible heals from the twists, as in both options above (if you still need to grab those, after leveling up LD, make a beeline for cocoon in primal avatar, first, then switch to the left towards crusader for consecration)

build would benefit of a +15 +7 INT Legendary Green Steel offhand for KTA

toughness/epic toughness are likewise optional and could be switched for more melee power from focus/spec feats or for epic damage reduction 10 PRR

this is sorta assuming fatepoints in epic destinies and availability of gear similar to your amount of heroic past lives. depending on how long you have been gone, you may not have access to that yet. just as a thought, to grind out Epic Destinies, a splash build with pally for saves and lay on hands or with some SP self heal class like cleric (or both) ,or adding some ranger for TWF feats and cure med wounds at least may be more viable. pure fighter comes with lot of options but self heal limits that cannot so easily be leviated and to run it in high difficulty endgame, most likeley needs or at least very much benefits of a combo of ideal gear, epic past lives, destiny twists for survival ...

while i personally dislike them, silver flame pots are also a potentially needed backup heal option ...

in any case there is many ways of doing this, consider it rough suggestions, though the following i will repeat as prly very worthwhile considerations :

a) dont do CON to dmg unless it absolutely HAS to be for a flavor reason
b) max STR, but get INT too as much as possible and use Know the Angles from Harper Tree to boost tactics and dmg
c) pick up PRR/MRR, 10% runspeed and 20%HP Stalwart stance as well as Stalwart tier4 +50% armor AC, at the least

d) be aware on pure fleshy kensei , heals can be an issue depending on playstyle, group, content, gear

edit: corrected error in enhancements due to characterplaner not having opportunity attack/liquid courage yet

Pardon me for seeming stupid, but what is SP?, KTA?, and LD? Also, while I am still going over some of this information and not fully assimilated it yet. This is an off the cuff first glance question, How does combat expertise translate into DPS? My ultimate goal is to keep that as high as possible while doing other things as secondary. Also, why the bludgeoning feats? I mean I just don't know, so feel free to laugh, I don't care personally if you did.

Overall I appreciate the advice you have given, it seems well thought out and good advice.

SP are Spell Points, which are gonna be a little hard to come by as a fighter, but you should be fine as long as you're only using KTA (15 SP) and Cocoon (8 SP). I ran Divine Crusader for my Vanguard life 'cause it added the free self-heals and Consecration and was fine for healing even though I tended to use Consecration in place of Cocoon. Keeping a Wizardry / Invigorating item equipped would be a good idea as soon as you get KTA.

KTA is the Int version of Divine Might (details in Tier two on this page (http://ddowiki.com/page/Harper_Agent_enhancements) and adds half your Int modifier to your damage for 15 SP every 2 minutes. It's pretty good on TWF and/or Int builds, and doesn't really show up on THF builds.

LD is Legendary Dreadnought, which most folks prefer to use for melee dps 'cause it adds a sustainable 70 melee power / 30 PRR through Master's Blitz, great action boost uptime and some halfway-decent CC for Str-based THF builds.

Combat Expertise is probably in there so you can run Improved Combat Expertise, a LD ability that grants 20 PRR and is loads better in epics than the +5 damage you get from Power Attack. While it doesn't directly help your damage, PRR means you can stay in the fight longer and spend less time healing / evading mobs - not to mention that soulstones have the lowest DPS of all =)

The Weapon Focus / Specialization lines grants 2 melee power per feat. While it does improve DPS, I'm not sure I agree with that feat choice as it seems a little granular. I don't see Great Cleave in the list, which would at least be helpful at low levels, so you could consider taking that and swapping it at endgame if you're not using it

With my experiances with TWF, I have had Cleave before, but found it something I disliked because I felt it interrupted the attack chain.

Also for a frame of referance for you guys, I tracked down where I left off via ddo wiki. I originally stopped playing during U8. I realize I got a lot of catching up to do, so any recommendations are welcome!

So this thread has me thinking of trying a Throw your Weight Around Kensei Dwarf fighter. Given that Kensei is an all in one tree you do have a good deal of extra AP to make that work.

I think I would do this something like:
Feat
Power Attack
Cleave
Great Cleave
Improved Critical
Combat Style x3
Weapon Focus/Specialization: Slasing x5
Weapon Focus/Specialization: Bludgeoning x4
Heavy Armor Master
Heavy Armor Champion

Enhancements
41 AP Kensei: Tier 5's + Capstone
19 AP Dwarf: Throw Your Weight Around
13 AP Defender: Hardy or Tenacious Defense
07 AP Harper: Know the Angles (on one minute time just like Power Surge)

Max Con don't mess with Tactics IMO. Can even use Silver Flame pots with no penalty to DPS.

I've been considering a ftr variant on my Kundarak Krasher (https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/470544-Adventures-in-Theorycrafting-Kundarak-Krasher);Dire Charge would work fine with this build. And TYWA is 18 APs not 19, so you could put an extra pt into KtA for 2 min duration; I prefer SP conservation on a non-caster build like this, particularly if one plans to twist Cocoon and/or Consecration+Sacred Ground for self-healing.

If you don't have Harper, you can do 41 Kensei (capstone) / 21 SD (Swift Defense) / 18 dwarf (TYWA).

If you don't have Harper, you can do 41 Kensei (capstone) / 21 SD (Swift Defense) / 18 dwarf (TYWA).

I am a VIP so Harper comes automatically unlocked. I also like your suggestion of Dire Charge, it would work well with my play style.

So this thread has me thinking of trying a Throw your Weight Around Kensei Dwarf fighter. Given that Kensei is an all in one tree you do have a good deal of extra AP to make that work.

I think I would do this something like:
Feat
Power Attack
Cleave
Great Cleave
Improved Critical
Combat Style x3
Weapon Focus/Specialization: Slasing x5
Weapon Focus/Specialization: Bludgeoning x4
Heavy Armor Master
Heavy Armor Champion

Enhancements
41 AP Kensei: Tier 5's + Capstone
19 AP Dwarf: Throw Your Weight Around
13 AP Defender: Hardy or Tenacious Defense
07 AP Harper: Know the Angles (on one minute time just like Power Surge)

Max Con don't mess with Tactics IMO. Can even use Silver Flame pots with no penalty to DPS.

Is there by chance a way I could do without the cleave feats? Do I have to have them?

Pardon me for seeming stupid, but what is SP?, KTA?, and LD? Also, while I am still going over some of this information and not fully assimilated it yet. This is an off the cuff first glance question, How does combat expertise translate into DPS? My ultimate goal is to keep that as high as possible while doing other things as secondary. Also, why the bludgeoning feats? I mean I just don't know, so feel free to laugh, I don't care personally if you did.

Overall I appreciate the advice you have given, it seems well thought out and good advice.

discopsycho already kindly answered most.

i should re-emphasize that the suggested build is a framework to tweak to your liking aimed at running at cap. if you have indeed been gone a long time, and are first time into epics, some added info would be useful: are you first time in epics, or have you already leveled any destinies up, if so, which ones. do you usually solo with a hire, or prefer to solo without hires, or do you always group. do you run norm/hard diffs, or do you want to aim for elite most of the time? how much consideration is given to defense and heal options and trying to get those earlier than later somewhat depends on these preferences of yours I would say.

to come back to the question how combat expertise and improved combat expertize translates to dps, well, it doesnt, directly, but maybe indirectly, potentially. the game has lately shifted to a lot of burst dmg incoming, particularly in harder epic quests and when champions hit you. this means, especially for a fighter with no innate self heal, that you have to break of doing dps for cumbersome little increment self heals via pots, wand, no full UMD heal scroll - thus, both PRR/MRR to reduce incoming dmg spikes, as well as AC to miss chance, max dodge your armor allows via item, blurry, ghostly, potentially displace clickies if you have from old shroud, are VERY MUCH your friend, so you can KEEP on doing damage.

these issues on pure fighter can be leviated a bit in epics, if you can twist in Destiny Twists:
primal avatar: cocoon (low SP short cooldown temp HP+short heal over time, the #1 epic level self heal thing for like, everybody)
fury of the wild: fast healing 1 tick of auto heal per minute
shiradi champion: healing spring, clicky for 5mins duration of heal tick every 20 sec
epic past life stance primal: fast healing, gain above benefit from an epic TR from lvl30 to 20

or can scroll heal rudimentary, or have silver flame pots ...

or run with friends who hjeal ya
or a hire

puggers nowadays will not necessarily heal others, though there still is kind people around ...

im not sure the thing grail was musing on is aimed at TWF. as you yourself said, cleave is not good on two weapon animations and disrupts attack flow - the only reason to take it on TWF, imho, is the simple first CLEAVE, as it unlocks Momentum Swing and LAY WASTE in Legendary Dreadnaught Destiny. Lay Waste is a very useful AOE knockdown ability, its cooldown is sometimes reset when using Momentum Swing, which in turn is sometimes reset by CLEAVE, thus, those 3 make up a common melee clicky rotation - but, as I said, even if Lay Waste has use on TWF, too, some will still forgo it as on their TWF they fear cleaves like a disease, and with some amount of reason XD

Also, if you have stunning blow, and at 29 pick up dire charge you already HAVE a Crowd Control option.

I see no reason whatsoever to take GREAT cleave on TWF, even if taking Cleave to unlock Lay Waste.

as for dire charge, mind that the destiny feats have requirements and dire charge is one of the expensive ones, it needs all 3 martial destinies to be maxed out so you can take it at 29 - this may requiring diligent destiny leveling from 20-29 - or, holding 29 till you got those unlocked

I used to agree with the TWF doesn't need cleaves but I don't anymore (unless your on a Ranger or have access to Dance of Death). Where does a TWF get AoE DPS? This isn't 2010 when you didn't really need AoE DPS.

With Cleave and Great Cleave you have at least 1000 DPS that's not really good but its better then nothing and its not that far behind a SWF using Cleave and Great Cleave either.

My build is pretty similar to Eryhn's, just some tweaks to stats, feats, etc. His build has slightly better defenses; mine should have slightly better DPS.

on great cleave, i felt for a group, dire charge + opportunity attack + lay waste + momentum + cleave went some way on my 2x kopesh last life, but, i mainly ran up to EE, with raids on LH max usually. maybe on higher diff, yeah, you would want that 2nd cleave on the mobs asap while they are stunned. otherwise, stuff is usually dead after above combo and u can stun blow the last survivor or just dire charge again at the end

@ ubongwah, i forgot magical training, agree that should definetly be in there for the echoes of power, SP and heal crit. Also, havent tried the earth scion yet for melee, is that rly viable if you dont substantially gear the spellpower via normal item + LGS? he would be better off with a high heal amp mainhand rather than acid?

and yeah, precision for high epics i forgot too XD

i should re-emphasize that the suggested build is a framework to tweak to your liking aimed at running at cap. if you have indeed been gone a long time, and are first time into epics, some added info would be useful: are you first time in epics, or have you already leveled any destinies up, if so, which ones. do you usually solo with a hire, or prefer to solo without hires, or do you always group. do you run norm/hard diffs, or do you want to aim for elite most of the time? how much consideration is given to defense and heal options and trying to get those earlier than later somewhat depends on these preferences of yours I would say.

to come back to the question how combat expertise and improved combat expertize translates to dps, well, it doesnt, directly, but maybe indirectly, potentially. the game has lately shifted to a lot of burst dmg incoming, particularly in harder epic quests and when champions hit you. this means, especially for a fighter with no innate self heal, that you have to break of doing dps for cumbersome little increment self heals via pots, wand, no full UMD heal scroll - thus, both PRR/MRR to reduce incoming dmg spikes, as well as AC to miss chance, max dodge your armor allows via item, blurry, ghostly, potentially displace clickies if you have from old shroud, are VERY MUCH your friend, so you can KEEP on doing damage.

or a hire

puggers nowadays will not necessarily heal others, though there still is kind people around ...

My current character in epics is a lvl 28 int based rogue with a repeater. While leveling I usually go with what gives the best exp, one would think Elite, but with past ventures the bonus given is once, and is consumed on a first time basis. So for little old me thinking I could get the bonus again in epic levels when I used it in heroics, man was I dead wrong! So normal/hard is considered more often than not. I have been trying to get used to soloing with a hireling, but half the time I will forget them because I am not used to having them. My old school world was hirelings were not desire able due to their bad AI when they were first implemented. I tend to group up as often as possible and prefer team play where available. On guild sponsored events we are always grouped up, be it for a raid or regular instance. I understand the current world of DDO does not always lend to that being possible so I have made adjustments where needed.

My priority tree would look like this: DPS being at the top, Defenses and Self healing at the second tier, everything else being at the third tier, such as tactical maneuvers. I did like the earlier suggestion of dire charge the most, if it were a tactical question. I understand further on how you show me combat expertise providing additional damage in that using it as a turtle up maneuver would allow me to continue fighting on. Ideally I would want PRR and MRR as high as possible next to respectable AC values, while not suffering too much if at all on the dps chart. I realize a dead PC is 0 dps, so I have to account for some kind of defense or be utterly worthless in a fight. Making the displacement clickys would likely be a non issue to create for me. When I returned to the game my guild and a player that I had met gave me so much old shroud mats that I can make just about anything. The issue is shards, but I am sure I could get a little support for a run or two into old shroud for what I would need. As for potions from the silver flame, yeah I will definitely have those on hand as a go to panic button if running out of spell points or about to die.

I don't think of them as mandatory, but wouldn't want to not have them. IMO AoE damage is important and there's not much of a source of that on a TWF with out the cleave feats.

i worked in some of the stuffs mentioned by others and did a v2 of above build:
no Power Attack/Cleave/Lay Waste, instead Precision/Imp Combat Expertise, added Magical Training, shifted Stats so that TWF feats can be taken earlier. Adapted suggested Destiny Twists to new to epics. with this one, level Legendary Dreadnaught to 5, then switch over to Shiradi to level to Tier 3, pick up Healing Spring as a twist there, move on to Primal and Fury, which you level up as you see fit, Primal has actually some perks to 2HF, though it is not as good as Legendary Dreadnaught or Crusader by some margin. From Primal, get the much needed cocoon as a 2nd twist of fate, from Fury of the Wild, get fast healing unlocked and switch that in for healing spring. your most important heal twist should be cocoon. if the 2nd heal twist is fast healing or healing spring is a bit of a flavor choice, heal spring ticks more often but is limited duration, fast healing twisted is a permanent thing - prly would chose the later.

in any case, once you got cocoon +1 one more heal option twisted in, move back to martial to level martial sphere for dire charge, then, later, at cap, before doing epic TR, can use the high level power to unlock some divine destiny stuff ...

Oh my! You and unbongwah do not make choosing which would be best easy. Both of you have solid options and I like them both. I see the relevancy of the cleave feats, such as when dire charging in to get a quick burst of DPS on trash mobs. For me this is looking like a death match between dps, survivability (PRR/MRR), and Some Tactical. Survivablity and tactical on even keel locking horns with DPS. Seriously though, is there no way I can try both on the same character between epic lives? Honestly, Eryhn, if I were have to choose right this second in all honesty, it would likely be unbongwah's build. Your build and advice is extremely solid in my mind. If I were to find anything anything wrong or to my disliking, I would most definitely switch to your build. In my mind its an even keel contest with virtually no winner coming to mind. I favor unbongwah's build only in that its slightly better dps. In the OR sections of his build I would likely fit in first blood and Heavy Armor Master to attempt to mix damage with some survivability, unless Tactical Master would be best here.

Thank you for your leveling advice for enhancments, it makes it a lot easier to figure out what I should be doing at what level to maximize my potential. I do not mind in your build having the TWF feats fully introduced later than earlier. I am a patient man and if its worth the wait then why not? I would also like to ask would anyone have any further thoughts or suggestions?

you definitely want the cleave feats, even as a twf build (the only exception is a t5 kotc or t5 tempest).

otherwise, you have literally 0 aoe and thats just a bad bad thing. sure, cleaves arent quite as effective as they are on thf and dont make full use of your equipped weapons...but its not like theyre bad...aoe dps is still aoe dps. cleave is also required for momentum swing which is required for lay waste. momentum swing i could see not using on a twf build because you wont be using both weapons, wont be getting glancing blows, its takes longer, and its not a very wide aoe, but its still very good burst dmg. lay waste id say is an absolute must, its sooooo good.

using momentum swing and lay waste requires you to be in power attack stance, which i 100% recommend over combat expertise. +20 prr is really good, but not at the cost of being in that stance. sure, basic power attack is only +5 damage, but thats before mp and crits. besides, thats the damage equivalent of 10 str. if there was a mutually exclusive stance giving you 10 strength, youd probably feel different, right? and sure, str does more things for you than jsut dmg, but the dmg from power attack isnt halved for your offhand, so thats good.

Upon careful examination I have found myself in a 2 ap short scenario in the Kensei section at lvl 12 of the leveling guide. It totals out as 41 ap used in Kensei, 24 in Stalwart Defender, and 14 in Harper Agent, but I am unable to get all the tier 5 enhancements in Kensei. I have checked everything over twice before thinking to post about this. Originally I was looking this over in case the thread got deleted, but in a way I am glad I checked now. My only thought of possibility is in the version of character planner used may be out of date or I just don't know. My planner is version 4.31.101 if asked for reference. So unbongwah, please have a look again so we may find where the ap short is?

I can only presume you took something which cost 2 APs which isn't in my build. Note that the builder is slightly out-of-date; it doesn't contain the latest patches yet, so it doesn't include Opportunity Attack or Liquid Courage. Did you take either of those?

When in doubt, reset your APs and start over.

EDIT: In hindsight, I would probably drop the two Tactics enhs for Opportunity Atk + Liquid Courage. If I had more APs to spare, I'd also take Iron Stomach for extra lulz. ;)

I admit, I haven't read whole thread, but now with tactic made viable for fighter, I wouldn't go dwarf at all. I'll be more str based for stun/trip. I am enjoying them a lot in my current build.

Let me throw my hat into the "Take cleave and great cleave" ring.

Also what he said above about being str based for stun and trip is spot on. My twf pure fighter has very little trouble stunning and tripping at the highest levels of difficulty. And when mobs do insane damage.....a stunned or tripped mob is a **** good thing!
