Dunno how many people like to play in first person view like I do. It adds a lot to the atmosphere: You can see the monsters up close, and get just more immersed into the game world than in 3rd person view. But the loss of a clear view on whats going on is a heavy one, so I´m not using it all the time of course.
But whats missing is a weapon animation for the attacks in first person view. And it should not be that hard to implement, every FPS has a seperate weapon animation for the player and for the 3D model. You dont have to add the spins the characters do on the attack animation, just show a swinging weapon.
This would be great especially for my next suggestion -> Virtual Reality Support!
VR is here guys, its coming this summer, and just think how great DDO would be with a VR device!
Input can still be keyboard and mouse (way too many slots to go for some controller support with a meagre 10-15 buttons) - it would be awesome!!

While the lack of visible hands/weapons in first person bothers me, the attack animations for melee don't mesh well with the view. For example, whirlwind, cleave, and higher BAB chains include 360+ spins. It would be a little odd to see your character's arms spinning in front of you. ;)

Lack of attack animations is the primary reason I don't use first person mode.

This ain't happening. They barely have enough staff to keep up with just maintaining the game.

Well, in First Person the spin should not be included (would make the players head spin for sure), but I´m fine with any animation at all, even if it looks a bit odd... better than nothing at all!

That´s sad, even only the animations (without my VR idea) would be awesome.

I could go for a weapon view in FP. Even though my initial gut reaction was f* VR, :P
I mainly stay in 3rd person. I want to see if some enemy is fixing to hit me from behind.
Though I have to ask, if your in FP and you cleave, your don't actually see yourself spin right? I don't think you do. If you want the weapon animation you better want the spin too. Then have fun getting dizzy as f*.

VR is cool and everything but I don't think this is under the development radar.
Also, it has the problem of not seeing what is attacking you from behind, flanking and what's right above your head; or under you if you're feather falling or flying or underwater.
Also, you have a problem of supporting your team mates under this view. You may say hey, I am soloing anyways.... VR is fine for soloing and if you are playing a FPS. I think DDO is first a MMORPG...
