No, you do not need to use a +1 & a +2 in order to then use a +3.

This isn't true anymore. They changes how tomes work a while back. You can use them at any level but the bonus will apply partially until you get to the required level. (Sort of like they do when you TR)

So you can now buy and use a +3 tome at level 1 now but you will only get +1 bonus from it until level 3, then you will get a +2 bonus, then finally the full +3 bonus at level 11.

Tomes are proactive, now, meaning you can buy a +7, use it at level 1 and it'll automatically give you the bonus when you reach the level.

In any event, you don't have to buy a +1 or +2 in order to use a +3 tome. The only time you need a prerequisite tome is when you use an upgrade tome (IE, in order to use a +3~4 upgrade tome you need to have a +3 tome already active).

There are two types of tomes

Stat tomes - Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Charisma, Wisdom, Constitution
Skill tomes

Stat tomes go at level 3 = +1, level 7 = +2, and level 11 = +3, etc. As stated, you can read these at level 1 but you won't see the impact until you reach the appropriate level.

Skill tomes go at level 1 = +1, level 5 = +2, and level 9 = +3, etc.

You can find tomes that go from Wisdom Tome +1 to +2 which means you must have read a +1 Wisdom tome to use before you can use the +1 to +2 tome.

basically, the best tomes are the ones that are a flat +1 or +2 or +3 or +4 or +5 etc.

When you find a +1 to +2 or a +2 to +3, they are more aggravation that anything. You can get loads of +1 to +2 tomes from Silver Daily Dice, but you rarely roll the +1 tome to use the +1 to +2.

sorry for the long time to respond. for some reason I could not get into the forums till now. it says at least lvl 2 tome. talks about a free one at 1750 favor which I am long ways from. will look at the 20% off +7 ones if it is correct that I can use it at lvl 1 and it will upgrade as I level. or other way if posted here before end of day. think the sale ends today.

edit: it looks like, ??, it might be better to buy a supreme one and get all stats raised. shrug. I also see that it is talking about after tr'ing. I probably won't even do that so...

can you provide a link? A new player build usually does not require tomes of any kind.

Also.. maybe tell us what server you are playing on. if you are comfortable with it, give us your character name... I know that a lot of veterans tend to have some lower tomes sitting around they keep 'just in case someone needs them'. maybe you get lucky. No promisses from me though, I recently gave my last +3 INT tome away I had sitting in my bank ;)

you can do it without a tome. The starting stats will need to be rejiggered but basically Str is a dump stat and you want 13 dex for precision. I suggest you add fighter levels for shield mastery feats as well but then the build changes.

the +3 enhancement bonus shards can be gotten by deconstructing a piece of equipment that already has a +3 enhancement bonus. (or +4, etc.)
you can usually buy the cheapest thing you can find on the auction house and liquid knife that bonus off of it.

in order to create the magical shards that supply prefix/suffix effects, you do need to have crafting levels and essence to make higher level shards. You can also buy them on the AH at a ripoff price, or have someone make the shard for you. most crafters are willing to do it for free, since shard creation is what earns them crafting xp.

as a piece of equipment can normally have only 1 prefix, 1 suffix and an enhancement bonus (there are exceptions), you will need to again disjunct the weapon, clearing it of its effects, and start over from the blank.
