They are incredibly rare, and yes it was a very lucky pull. I know one person who got one outside of the Dreaming Dark in 5 years of playing. Two people now I guess.

There were jerks who used to sit in the harbor spamming general chat hoping to buy one from newbs who didn't know what they had for one twentieth of a pittance. Back in the days when there were newbs to be fleeced.

I have pulled two Ioun stones outside of Dreaming Dark

1) Vibrant Purple - Chest in Tangleroot Series (Locked door with electrical traps) - I don't remember which section we were on, but I do remember we needed to continue on from that room, but we did not need to go into the second part.

2) The Dark Blue Ioun Stone - Found in Witchdoctor's chest in last quest of the Sewers Venn's Fate.


Ioun stones are rare drops, so congratulations. I do recommend putting that one away until you can upgrade it in the forge of Dreaming Dark. As unlike the other Ioun stones if that one is depleted it will turn to dust unless it is upgraded.

Yes back before they were added to Dreaming Dark Ioun stones were extremely rare finds and would go for a small fortune.

I've only ever pulled one (a pale lav) outside of DD, IIRC it was as an end reward for the baudry chain.

nice pull, but that is a suppressed plis. make sure you upgrade it before using it otherwise it will turn to dust once all the charges are gone.

Yes. Unsuppressed PLISes have 50 charges, not 20 like the suppressed one in the screenshot.

I also got my very first Ioun Stone from a harbor quest, Pale Lavender, too. This was back during my main character's first life, even. Kept sitting on it for years until I was finally able to upgrade it.

Just thought that ioun stones drop in low level quest stopped a while ago..

EDIT: Because thers isn't a way to find an unsuppressed ioun stone outside the dream forge, is it?

I've only been present for one Ioun Stone pull outside Dreaming Dark. It is extremely rare. Probably on par with pulling an Astral Diamond.

I've gotten two pale lavender ioun stones as quest reward options; one for Durk's Got a Secret and one for the Kobold's New Ringleader. I've also gotten a dusty rose and a vibrant purple ioun stone in chests on harbor quests. I have run Dreaming Dark a few times and picked up a couple other ioun stones. Eventually I'd like to get the whole set. So far I think I have 3 unsuppressed, the dex one, the one that gives you archmagi, and one of the pale lavenders.

There's a bunch of other weird stuff on the low level loot tables too. The spoon of infinite tavern food is one of the sillier. Necklace of Fireballs is another item of this type.

Watched a friend pull a Bottle of Air out of the Korthos tavern quest end chest. That's another oddball item I've seen that's super rare.

Scarabs of protection seem slightly more common.

Curiously, this stuff only seems to happen in low level chests. I don't think these things exist in anything above about 4th level.
