hopefully they're better at movies than they are at games.

Well, color me unexcited. All of the D&D-based movies I've ever seen were rank and a complete waste of time. Maybe Warner Brothers will be able to pull off something that is somewhat worth sinking 2 hours into. I'm not holding my breath...

“We are thrilled that this beloved property can finally make its way to the big screen after 20 years"

Best quote from that article, even they want to block out the memory of the prior movies. Though I guess the last on big screen was in 2000, so perhaps it's close enough to be a minor quibble, and others were direct-to-video. That said, movies get announced all the time long before they ever get made or just canned by the studio after sitting in limbo for years. Not holding my breath for a good movie or even "a" movie at this point.

People seem to be missing the major benefit, which is that:

Warner Brothers already has a synergistic D&D/Forgotten Realms computer game tie-in, ie, DDO.

That gives Warner Brothers great incentive to

1. Not pull the plug or starve the game from lack of funding
2. Build up populations brought in from the movie series -- and remember, it's planned as a series, so that is long term interest.
3. Maybe even innovate the game and update engine, even theoretically DDO2, etc.

In the final battle in the movie with the stars lag-wipe? It'll be realistic.

So what?
Warner bross got the big bang theory, and those nerds plays wow and swtor instead of ddo or even lotro, despite beign d&d and lotr fans.

WB will probably advertise nwo instead of ddo.

Only if the movie also chronicles the stars' development from new adventurers to demi-god level PCs by spending at most 5 minutes of time on battles where each star independently charges headlong through dungeon after dungeon just roflstomping bad guys and never once grouping up together until the final battle.

You forget one of the downsides: The movie(s) will take place in Forgotten Realms (probably about the Companions of the Hall). This means that new players are going to want to play in Forgotten Realms from 1st level - not Eberron. How do you think people are going to react when they discover they can only "start" in Forgotten Realms if they buy the Iconic Races that are not Bladeforged? And how much worse will their reaction be when they discover that "starting" in Forgotten Realms means you're already level 15? So, if WB making a D&D movie (or movies) is all roses, then I would agree that it's all half-dead roses at best.

I still cant figure what could make this movie any different than other fantasy movie? will be charaters titling themselves as level 20 wizard and lvl 16ranger level 4 rogue? Or will it be just based on some popular setting and thus be more like Underdark/ Drizzt based movie or whatever other setting based? will it be so dndish that we ll have to spen 5 minutes of movie while it explain while some iconic monster is so deadly so the clueless mass would get it or will it just abuse couple trademarked CG mobs to get some effect heavy scenes just for showoff so not much dndish at all?

Only approach I d welcome and actually find funny would be some metamovie - something like Assault of Dragonkeeep from Borderlands2, where the characters story and actual player story mixes together to bring real fun ....well, not in way of Mazes and Monsters:)

Otherwise I d rather watch scotts Legend xth time than some plain fantasy movie insisting its based on game

This has the opportunity to be a good thing for DDO.

First it settles a long running legal battle between WotC and WB which has been simmering for two plus years before the actual court battle 10 months ago.

The agreement while announced for a film franchise probably contains language about things like associated games, characters, settings, and other marketing details.

As for Big Bang Theory, well the also played Age of Conan and a couple other games as well as WoW and SW. However much of that was worked in before WBIE purchased Turbine. As well as the continual bickering on the D&D movie rights it is not surprising the BBT characters didn't play DDO.

Just a comment on the original D&D movies, they were supposed to be like a typical RP session and if watched in that point of reference they are kind of funny. Not quite but kind of.

Now with an already developed script, producers hired, as the movie moves forward would love to see a connection with DDO, even if the [insert movie title] expansion is released say a week after the movies release it would be a great thing.

heh, I actually liked the Dungeons and dragons 2, cause it has archetypal characters and script so bad one was wondering about possibility author actually made rools for each situation and then tried to handle it so it make at least bit sense:)

There are already multiple forum threads on this (admittedly awesome) topic. Closing this one due to insults in the OP.
