Elite Rushmore's Mansion?

I was running the Rushmore's Mansion (http://ddowiki.com/page/Dr._Rushmore%27s_Mansion:_Behind_the_Door) challenge recently. When I checked the map to decide which way to go next - no gates. Did I somehow discover the "extra difficulty" setting, or did I just find an odd bug that I've only seen once in dozens of runs? I still got a decent number of mats, but unlucky crest drops had me going for Sam out of my usual order. I have no idea when this happened. I only noticed when I checked the map for the open/locked gate locations.
